Rating: Summary: T. H. White will grip the youth-readers with this classic! Review: "The Once And Future King" was a brilliant novel, written by T. H. White. The novel introduces a young and modest boy, named Wart, who is later destined to be King. For example, book one, "The Sword In The Stone," tells how Warts dynamic character changes, under the training of Merlyn, the great magician. This story pulled me in it's constant and intriguing fable. In my opinion, White tends to digress using elaboration of trivial matters, but overall, weaves a beautiful and well thought-out novel! Please look into this wonderful masterpiece! If you have any questions, please e-mail me at the address above! -Lesley Mendonca
Rating: Summary: Enchanting piece guaranteed to keep you drawn to it. Review: The Once and future King was one of the best novels I have ever read. I usually don't really get into books abot the medieval times, but I definitely got into this book.Everybody should read this novel and I hope they will have the same opinions as me.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good on the medievil england Review: I was given this book by my mother years ago, when i was 12/13 and i could never get past the first book, but recently, 10 years on i picked it up and loved it. Since i was 12 i've got into medievil history and re-enactment, and from someone who's worn and fought in some of the clothing described in the book i can tell you, it's all pretty accurate. It is a book that tells so much more than the boring majestic one dimentional story too often used by just about every other author writing about the times of arthur. The story is tragic and sad, but the way it was written by TH White makes it a story about real people. I truely believe this book to be one of the classics of all time because it has everything i ask for in a book on medievil england - interesting and realistic. I am sick of hearing those times described by people who have not taken the time to properly research or even wear some of the clothing/armour they are so inaccurately describing. A great book.
Rating: Summary: This was sorta flat. Review: I found the parts of this book I forced myself to read stupid and very similar to "Alice in Wonderland" in tone and style. Robin Hood doesnt belong in stories about Arthur IMHO. This book didn't seem very serious at all, but maybe that is because I have read Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy (which I highly recommend). Another thing I dont like about the OAFK is the description of Merlin. He seems to be portrayed as foolish and old. On the other hand, the descriptions were often good, and I could imagine what was happening.
Rating: Summary: The greatest book ever written Review: Truly the greatest book ever written. It is difficult to describe in words why this is so good, how it makes one feel. This is everything a story should be: it is funny, and happy, and sad, and tragic, and noble, and human. This surely is the reason language was invented. After five, six, seven readings, White's amazing style will not fail to make you laugh, cry, and most of all, enjoy. No words can adequately describe this book.
Rating: Summary: One of the few books I ever truely hated. Review: This is one of the most horrible books I have ever read. It is long and drawn out. Sacrificing trees for this mindless drivel should be a crime. The only slightly interesting part was the first book, The Sword and the Stone. After that, absolutely nothing of importance happens. Throughout this book, I was rooting for Lancelot and Guinever to die, so maybe we could focus on Arthur, the only interesting character. The others are all shallow and uninteresting.
Rating: Summary: Its a great version of this famous tale Review: This novel is a great piece of work. I had to find a book on Arthurian legend for my ninth grade english class, not even thinking about I grabbed the first book I could find at the local library. I luckily picked a great book. It is a very large book, but instead of being boring I read it almost to fast. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys historical fiction. The author, T.H White, does a great job of making the well-known story into more of a story than just a legend. There doesn't seem to be anything unusual in White's writing style, it's just a good story. The story spans most of Arthur's life, starting when he is a young boy living with his foster parents to his death as a king. The author makes the reader almost feel the pain that the characters feel. White makes it as though the person reading the book is involved in the story. You probably wouldn't like this book unless you enjoy knowing about historical writing. This story is not a real event in history, but the story its self is history. But it's hard to remember when you are reading this book that it didn't really happen hundreds of years ago. I highly recommend this book to all people. You have to ignore how long this book is, i had to read it and all the pages were gone before i knew it. After reading this i have a picture of how times were in the middle ages, maybe it is wrong, oh well. I think we should all have to read this when we are my age.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read Review: An excellent book that will really grab your imagination, jiggle it around a bit, and throw it right back out the window again. A little hard to follow in the down-time,(thinking, talking to nobody inparticular, etc.) but other wise full of action, intrigue, magic, battle, murder, sadism, and some very descriptive humor! Definitely worth the time and the money.
Rating: Summary: Best Book ever Review: I'm twelve and when I first read it I was amazed. My father told me he read it when he was in college so when I got my mentality was: oh no, not another long boring book. But boy was I wrong. Before I read this book I wasn't to interested in the Aurthurian Legend. But now it's my favorite topic of books. I am only disapointed because I can't give it more tham 5 stars. Excellent reading.
Rating: Summary: One of the most hauntingly beautiful stories ever written. Review: I found this book in the library at camp a year ago at age 15, and was constantly amazed at how eloquently it retold a story already full of energy. Although at the beginning I felt it was too lighthearted, by the end I realized this was needed to balance out the powerful midsection and ending. It deals less with the Arthurian part of the legend, concentrating on the far more heart-wrenching tale of the affair between Guennevere and Launcelot, and its bitter results. With the themes of love, jealousy, and above all redemption, this story is the most beautiful I have ever read.
