Rating: Summary: My favorite book of all time Review: I happened upon this book in the library one day as a teenager. I have checked it out every time I go since. I finally bought my own copy, and now I can pass the magic on to my daughter!
Rating: Summary: A three dimensional princess Review: The Ordinary Princess is a delightful respite after reading the Gail Levine "Princess Tales" series. One of the things I like the most is the princess is a rich character and very three dimensional. As is expected, she'll fall in love with someone eventually, but -- surprise -- we get to see her develop as a real, ordinary person first. This is a contrast from many of the books in the Gail Levine "Princess Tales" series. The language is fairly rich, also a pleasant treat, but the chapters are a bit too long for reading aloud as a bedtime story.
Rating: Summary: My kind of Fairy Tale! Review: This is one of my all time favorite fairy tales. I am captivated every time I read this book. You should be too! It is the tale of wonderful Princess Amy, and her liking of being Ordinary, which leads to exciting adventures. I am only a 6th Grader, but I have to say that this is probably one of the best books that I have ever read...not counting the Bible. I found this by chance on the shelf of my school's library this past school year. I hadn't ever heard of it, so I decided I would read it. The shelf that I found it in was at the back of the library in a corner, that no one else goes to but me, which is a shame, because all of the good fairy tales are back there! I read it in about a day...I couldn't help myself! I swallowed it WHOLE. I wasn't mad about the length of the book, it was actually a good thing. If the book had been 400 pages long, then it wouldn't have been as interesting. I agree with some of the other reviewers...I am glad that Puffin came about with this reissue, but the packaging in blah. The cover illistration is not suitable for a story like this...I really wish they would have used the original art by M.M. Kaye, because that's what Princess Amy looks like in my mind. Overall this book is AWESOME, I'm just not sure about this edition. I reccomend buying the first couple editions, because those are the ones with M.M. Kaye's original cover art illistrations. Occasionally you can find it on Ebay, or AbeBooks.com.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book, but... Review: I agree with the other reviewers that this is a beautiful, charming story... my complaint is with the reissue. While I'm glad it's been done, the cover art does not fit with the book. M.M. Kaye's original drawings, including cover art, shows Amy - this is some 8 or 10-year old. If publishers are going to reissue 80's "classics" (Ellen Emerson White's President's Daughter series recieved similar treatment with a 16-yr old herione being redone as a 10-yr old on the cover), they need to keep the cover art in spirit with the book itself, not just "random middle-ages looking kid" like we get here. Otherwise, it's probably one of the lovliest stories you'll ever read!
Rating: Summary: One of the best! Review: This was one of my childhood favorites... It's a great spin on the classic princess tale. It is sweet and funny and I read it over and over. I recommend it for any young girl (I think I loved it best when I was about 8) who is a little quirky and has her head in the clouds. Soooo much more fun than stories about a perfect princess!
Rating: Summary: Delightful fairy tale for us "ordinary people" Review: I first read this book as a child and reread it so many times as to almost have it memorized. It is an enchanting tale that proves you don't have to have riches, long flowing golden hair, or be royalty to live happily ever after. What matters is your personality and determination. The book is humorous and clever, while telling one of the sweetest little love stories ever told. MM Kaye gently mocks all the fairy-tale norms while offering a delightful alternative. Dramatic rescues? Love at first sight? Not in this book. Instead children can see the value of being yourself and building a relationship based on friendship and respect. And MM Kaye doesn't teach values by preaching, but by simply by treating readers to one of the best "fairy tales" ever told. In fact, she might be surprised to hear how many values I found in it as a child, as I'm sure that was not why she wrote it at all. The illustrations are delightful and help complete the story. I hope they were left in this edition. When I had my first little girl, I searched everywhere for an affordable copy and finally found one in a used bookstore. I'm so glad this title is back in print. Every little girl should have a copy.
Rating: Summary: A Children's Classic Review: I fell in love with this book as a child and tried to get a copy of it. Imagine my dismay when I found it was out of print! So I am really glad that it is finally back in print. This is a wonderful story of a truly different fairy tale. It has a human aspect to it and makes you really empathize with Amy and Perry. The pictures are as charming as I remember them. My only complaint is that I loved the older cover wtih Amy in the purple dress better and that this copy doesn't have the gorgeous colored pictures in it.
Rating: Summary: The Ordinary Princess Review: The Ordinary Princess is a great, exciting, and fun to read book about a princess named Emerald, who is ordinary. A princess is supposed to have long blond hair with beautiful sapphire colored eyes and fair skin, but Emerald is different. She was one of seven sisters and when she was born they threw a big party and decided to invite fairies, like in Sleeping Beauty. After all the fairies presented their gifts to the princess the sea witch came in. She was mad because she was late, so when she presented her gift she gave the princess the gift to be ordinary. As the princess grew up her beautiful blond hair turned brown, her fair skin got freckled, her eyes turned Hazel, and instead of being called Emerald she started to be call Amy. This is a great adventure book most people would like!
Rating: Summary: Fun to read Review: I liked this book because it was very sweet and enchanting. A brief summary is that there is a princess born, and a fairy gives her the gift of being ordinary. Later, her parents try something she doesn't like to try and make her be married off, so she runs away to a place where she finds her love. The only thing I didn't really like about this book was that the princess WAS perfect. She was one of those classic 'loves animals, caring' kinds of people. The only way she was ordinary was that she wasn't 'beautiful,' and this doesn't make her ordinary. Plenty of famous people weren't beautiful and they were anything BUT ordinary. Other that that, this was a great book and you should read it if you like sweet fairy tales.
