Rating: Summary: full of excitement and adventure! Review: I've read most of Paulson's book, and I find this one to be the best yet. It is a exciting book which leads you along on the long trail of the Iditarod. It has motivated me to one day race this famous race. I found the book full of detail and description. I felt I was right there racing with him in the sled. Thank you for writing such a great book!
Rating: Summary: This is a great book for everyone Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read, I didn't want it to end. The way the author explains events and details makes you feel like you are part of the story. I would highly recommend this reading for anyone who loves dogs or has children they read to. Anyone who's never read Gary P. books must read this.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Hilarious Review: This is actually one of the few books I have read twice. Gary Paulsen tells the story of his rookie run in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. He starts out this process knowing almost nothing about what it will take to actually get to the starting line, much less finish the race. His experiences during the training phase are tragically funny. The abuse he takes from his dogs, the elements, and his lack of knowledge about putting an Iditarod racing team together would make most people quit. Gary, however, sticks it out and endures what must have been one of the most spiritual experiences of his life. I read this book on a plane and I was laughing so hard I think people thought I was crazy. Have fun with it!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely funny, engrossing, informative, & entertaining Review: This is a story of a man who used a dog sled to get around his trapline and decided to run the Iditerod. He takes you through all his preparations and through the race. The book is exciting, funny, informative, and downright good reading. Beware of reading this if you wake up at night and want to go back to sleep. If you hit one of the many funny parts you will be up the rest of the night!
Rating: Summary: A thrilling ride through Alaska's interior. Review: And I thought jumping out of planes was a crazy thing to do! Gary Paulsen's first attempt to run the Iditarod was funny, thrilling, frightening, but never ever dull. The spare prose, honest accounting of mishaps and emotional sharing of his becoming "one" with the dogs was fascinating and made me envious. Would I do it? No. Do I admire and respect his courage, persistance and stupidity? Yes. What a treat of a book and a real surprise.
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorites! Review: I have read this book three times, and laughed till I cried every single time. The author's story of running the Iditerod is inspiring and very enjoyable. Anyone who loves dogs will appreciate this book. I've recommended it to everyone I know.
Rating: Summary: this book taught me alot about my husky pup and about life Review: A friend gave me this book right after I got a red & white, blue eyed husky pup named Sky. Reading the way Paulsen writes about these amazing dogs helped us approach her with the humor and respect needed. I loved the book from the start, and couldn't really believe it when he crossed the line. Didn't want the book or the race to end. He's a superb writer; he has a way of reminding one of what really counts in this life. Rarely has a book cracked me up so much and made me cry. All in one swell foop. Thanks for the insights into the heart of man and dog.
Rating: Summary: an absolutely perfect book (except it reads too fast) Review: What a great story! And a true one at that! I think this will have to remain Paulsen's masterpiece. It made me laugh and cry and fear. It contains a wealth of information, fabulous description, and great suspense. It has it all. Don't even think of not reading Winterdance.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: There are only a few books about the Iditarod, dog-sledding, or even dogs in general that are an absolute must, and this is one of them. With Winterdance, Gary Paulsen drags the reader through blizzards, moose-attacks and bad ice, on a wild Alaskan ride. What could have been a normal account of this event, Paulsen turns into a gripping, eye-opening, hilarious novel! Whether you have any idea what the Iditarod is or not, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK
Rating: Summary: A fine account of an experice few people ever come close to Review: This book was a delight to read and what I would classify as a real "page turner". Paulsen paints a vivid and chilling account of a race that few people know anything about and an even fewer amount of people dare to participate in. I credit Paulsen with for his courage and bravery, both before and during the race. I found his description amazingly well worded, and the realness even more so. I highly recommend this book for anyone, in hopes that they will enjoy it as much as I
