Summary: a door near here
Review: A Door Near Here by Heather Quarles is a very heartbreaking book because the children were always alone,it had alot of suspense and the words of the children were very passionate in their struggle to survive. The heartbreak of the children was a slow process during this book. They had to survive without the confort of their mother and that seemed very terrifying to me. During the time the children were doing on their own alot of suspense took place. When the mother was gone and left the children alone with a sick younger sister struck up suspicious feelings. This novel was a very interesting piece to read with the different ways the children help each other toget the through the rought times in many different places in this book.It really was a good book to read and I enjoyed it!

Summary: Brief Summary and Review
Review: A Door Near Here by Heather Quarles

Brief Summary and Review:
Katherine does not live the life of a normal teenage girl. She becomes the head of the household and does not even realize how much responsibility she has taken on. Her mother is a single parent, who becomes an alcoholic because of the loss of her job. She rarely gets out of bed unless it is to get another drink. Katherine has one brother and two sisters. Katherine's father lives in another state and only visits once a year. They do not know who the father is of Katherine's younger sister. She does not tell her dad about her mother's problem because she feels he will not be responsible for someone who is not his child. She has to take on the responsibility of getting food for them, making sure everyone attends school, and make sure everyone is dressed properly. Katherine tries to do this so that their teachers will not become suspicious and split up their family. However, Katherine's younger sister tries to leave school campus to find the door to Narnia. The younger sister knows that her mother is sick and thinks that if she finds this door her mother will get better. Katherine is able to conquer this situation. However, one of her teachers finds out about their situation and turns them in to social services. Katherine, her brother, and sisters move to Michigan with her father. Her father accepts the responsibility of all four children, not just his three. Katherine's mother is put in rehab and does not plan to contact her children until she has fully recovered. This is a wonderful story about the closeness of siblings and how they work together to overcome their problems. This book would be interesting for students in the seventh grade and above. Teachers could use this book to study health, geography, and language arts.

Summary: A Door Near Here, A good book near you!
Review: A Door Near Here is a great book that you should read. The book is about four brother and sisters that have to survive on their own because their mother won't get out of bed and their father lives far away. Thinking that they might get split up if caught they cover up the fact that their mother is sick. You could relate to the characters in this book. They think and do what you would have done if the same thing was happening to you. I liked how you never knew what was going to happen next to the characters. It made me wonder what would happen if this happened to me. I think that this is a great book and that you should read it.

Summary: A great story
Review: A door near here is a great story about a girl that must take control of her family when her mother is bed-ridden from drunkness. It's a uplifting story that will make you think "what would happen if I was in her shoes." Being a Cahtloic school veteren myself I can actually relate to some of the scenes. I recommend this book to any teen who's going through tough times.

Summary: Great and interesting book!
Review: A Door Near Here is a lot like Homecoming (by Cynthia Voigt). Iam 12 years old, and I recommend this book for 13 and up. The reason Igive it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it had a few foul words and was, in some parts, not as interesting as other books. This, book, however was interesting and somewhat enjoyable. I would recommend reading the Harry Potter books, the Redwall series, Ties that Bind, Ties that Break, and Chinese Cinderella.

Summary: Heartfelt and Suspenseful
Review: A Door Near Here is probably be the best drama book I've ever read in my life. The struggle that the kids in this book had to go through makes me realize that I take my parents for granted and that I am very fortunate to have them. As I read this book it made my heart sink just to think about how Katherine, Douglas, Tracy, and Alisa had to ration their food so they wouldn't run out. I personally thought Katherine was smart and clever when she thought of her plans to keep surviving and also lying to the teachers. There were still some parts of suspense when they were in the grocery store at 2 in the morning and when Alisa got lost in the woods, but that's all I'm goign to tell....I don't want to give it away. This book is for everybody to read, no matter what age you are, b/c this made me open my eyes and see the truth. After reading this I love my parents and brothers even more.

Summary: A Door Near Here
Review: A Door Near Here poignantly chronicles the attempt of a four-child family to deal with the Mother's alcoholism. It is fairly realistic and paints no rosy pictures. Although the book is excellent, the descriptions of the alcoholic mother might be to graphic for some students. Recommended for teachers, parents, and students.

Summary: Compelling, tragic but honest!
Review: A Door near here surronds Katherine, a girl who is forced to grow up and take care of her family which divorce has seperated her and alcoholism has left pretty much starving. Only Katherine is determined to keep them together, at all costs. She resorts to convincing everyone everything is ok, sometimes even herself and including her father who visits with his new wife. She knows he would offer to take them in a second, but Alisa, the youngest is a child of one her mothers boyfriends and splitting up is not an option. The rest of the story follows Katherine's desperate situation, dealing with nosy teachers and Alisa's new obsession with finding Aslan. The lion from the Narnia books according to Alisa is the cure to her mother's 'sickness'. All three oldest deal with keeping her in reality, without loosing their touch with it in the process. Written well and extremely compelling. It's a sad book, but a good read.

Summary: A touching story
Review: A door near here was a great book .I liked this book because it was so realistic . The theme of this book is you never know what will happen in the end .the story is about a 15 year old girl who's mother is an acholic and stays in bed since the mom stays in bed the the girl has to take care of her family and pretty soon there out of ,mone and do know what to so.There is much more to this story but i dont want to ruin the suprise. I think this book is a good book for ages 10 -20 because i read this book when i was 10 and i understood the whole message i also think there are some 10 years old who understand the book better than 12 year olds this is why i reccomend this book to that age group.

Summary: A Door Near Here
Review: A Door Near Here was a ok book. The main point of the book was really a mother that negelected the childeren. So then the oldest child named Katherine had to run the house hold, so basicly she was the mother. I guess the book shows that every family needs a parent that is responsiable and a kid can't do it. Katherine had to take care of her two sisters and one brother they were all younger then her. Douglas, Tracey, and Alisa the youngest. The author Heather Quarles gives the book an unrealistically happy ending which I thought was a pretty good idea that mad the book a little better. Althought adults eventually take charge, life is only a little better for everyone concerned.
