Summary: *~The Contender~*
Review: "Everybody wants to be a champion. That's not enough. You have to start by wanting to be a contender..." -The Contender
In Growing up, you make decisions that affect your future and identity. The Contender tells a story of a boy, Alfred Brooks, and his struggles and triumphs in his life. Alfred gets help along the way and learns from others. I enjoyed reading this book because if was very intriguing. I disliked the fact that it was mainly about boxing, something I'm not very interested in. As an overall, the book had a unique theme and was fast-moving.

Summary: "A True Blue Fighter"
Review: Have you ever read a book that is so full of "life" that you feel as if you are in the story, watching the plot unfold? The book, "The Contender", is just that type. In the beginning of the book, the main character, Alfred Brooks, is a high-school dropout that works at the local grocery store. As the story proceeds, Alfred becomes a "true blue boxing fighter". "The Contender" was full of twists and turns, which is what made the book such a page-turner. Robert Lipsyte proved to Alfred and to readers that if you put your mind to what you are doing, your heart will follow, and you will succeed.

Summary: Hope, Freindship, and Determination
Review: The book The Contender was a wonderful story of hope, friendship, and determination. I loved this book because it showed the meaning and difficulty of growing up. I feel this book is important for readers around the age of 12-16 to read because at these times, kids are bullied and experience peer pressure just as Alfred ,the main character, did. The book shows a positive way to stay away from bad decisions even though they are all around us. Mr. Lipsyte has created a masterpiece that I feel everyone should experience.

Summary: Wonderful
Review: This book inspires me to live a better life. From reading this book, I have learned to listen to my parents and parental figures. Just as Alfred has to deal with his problems, so do I. I feel as if, in a distant way, the book is talking about my life. This is a wonderful book. If you haven't read it you must. I strongly recomend it.

Summary: The Contender
Review: I personally loved the novel The Contender by Robert Lipsyte. It has the main character fighting for what he believes in even when his best friend won't help him. Without any support, he turns to boxing and begins an epic adventure down the path of life, teaching both himself and others. He must resist temptation and succeed at any cost in his dual lives as an African-American in Harlem and as a boxer. I recommend this book for anybody who needs anything to read.

Summary: The Contender
Review: I would give this book 3 stars because it is about boxing and that does not really interest me although it was a book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the world of boxing. This book was also very difficult for me to follow along with. The writter did not tell you who was speaking and when, you just had to guess. Also the people in the book did not talk with right grammer so it was had to know what they were trying to say. All in all it was an ok book.

Summary: The Contender
Review: To me, The Contender was not the greatest book I have ever read. I love sports but I am not fond of Boxing. The book was really slow and did not have a great ending, the ending was a slite bit confusing. I like books that have alot of action and will capture your attention. I like books that are more fiction than reality. The Contender was ok though because it told a good story, I just didn't like the way the author wrote it. I do believe that if I was ever to get into a rut in a sport and was having a problem, I could relate back to the Contender and see how Alfred accomplished his goals. The one thing I really liked about this book was it had a good moral to the story.

Summary: The Contender
Review: From a high school dropout, to a talented boxer, Alfred Brooks goes through the hardships of being African-American in the 1960's on the streets of Harlem. "He puts the sport in the right perspective," as others have said. While training to become a boxer he is tempted with drugs, alchol, and gang activity. This book not only teaches you about boxing, but also teaches about friendship, hardships, and African-American's during this time. This book is very realistic and makes you think of this time period when blacks were discriminated. This is a great read for the young adult because it is so realistic. You also don't have to be interested in sports at all to really get "into" this book. Its one of my favoritebooks I've ever read ( but that's not sayin' much ).

Summary: N/A Review
Review: I give the Contender 4 stars because I think that it is a very good book for people on the street and those who've dropped out of school. It has a moral and gives good examples of street life and ghetto towns. It helped me understand how tough life really is, and inspired me to stay in school. If you are dropped out of school and feel lonely or trapped, you should read this book. If you do read this book, you will have a new perspective of some things. It also helps you understand life as a boxer better and understand that you have to be very devoted and strong.
