Rating: Summary: The contender Review: In the novel The contender, by Robert Lipsyte, the theme of struggles of a boxer living in the getto in queens New York around 1980. The main character Alfred is a sixteen year old high school drop that works at a grocery store. "The tiny wires of berglar alarm snaked alalong the molding of the back door, one good swipe should do it. Wait till nexed friday when there would be a lot of money in the regester One of the struggles he goes through is temptation. One of the many examples of living in the getto is,"there was a scuffing noise out in the hall,"the adicts." I thought this was a great book because it is very realistic and that made it more enjoyable to read.

Rating: Summary: The Contender - An on-line review by Jennifer Liu 1/01/2001 Review: The Contender a is story about a teen boy, Alfred Brooks, who learns to deal with the drugs and crimes on the streets of Harlem. With his best friend in jail, he turns to Donatelli's Gym, a boxing club, because as a high school dropout he was going nowhere anytime soon. I think this story really compares with the lives of many today who live out there trying to step away from the drugs and crimes. I think this is a very inspirational story about a boy who wants to help, but also need to find his place in life. The message I got from this book was don't give up because everyone needs time to find themselves. Alfred Brooks, 17, held up a job and refused to give up to drugs like his best friend James, but instead stuck by him to help him quit.
Rating: Summary: The Contender according to Kyle Review: This story is about a young man growing up in Harlem. The boy, Alfred, early in the story learn to deal with drugs, crime, and how to deal with losing his best friend. Alfred early in the story is asked by his friend, James, to help him rob the store in which Alfred works at. Alfred refuses to and James goes and robs the store. Alfred though, forgot to tell his friend about the silent alarm. James gets caught and goes jail. Alfred is devastated and James goes on to never forgive Alfred for deceiving him. Alfred's life is ruined. James was his best friend. Alfred has to find something that relieves his guilt. So he decides to go up to local boxing gym. He asks the gyms owner if he would teach him to box. The owner decides to give him a chance but, says that he will have to work real hard and get himself on a strict diet. Through the rest of the book you learn about hardships that Alfred has to overcome in order to become a "Contender" in the boxing ring. I feel that this was a good book. This story show a young man growing up and maturing. This book brings to mind the "Rocky" movies, in which a punk kid matures in a great athlete.
Rating: Summary: The Contender Review: Alfred's life is going nowhere fast. He's a high-school dropout working at a grocery store. His best friend is drifting behind a haze of drugs and violence, and now some street punks are harassing him for something he didn't do. Feeling powerless and afraid, Alfred decides to visit Donatelli's Gym, the neighborhood's boxing club. He wants to be a champion, on the streets and in his own life. Alfred doesn't quite understand when Mr. Donatelli tells him, "It's the climbing that makes the man. Getting to the top is an extra reward."In the end, he learns that a winner isn't necessarily the one standing when the fight is over. I reccomend this book to Teens and adults because they will be knocked out by this woderfull story of how a frightened boy becomes a man.

Rating: Summary: Exciting Book For Teens, Adults And Children Review: I think THE CONTENDER is a great book for people to read because their are a lot of thing in that book that a very interesting. It talks about thing that are going on in today's society. Also, you will see how bad some friend's really are and Alfred had to find out the hard way. I think that everyone should read this.
Rating: Summary: Reminds me of Rocky Review: I grabbed this book by random at my school library b/c i neededsomething to read. Now I'm glad I chose this book b/c it's awesome. The dialogue and turbulent action that takes place keeps the reader interested. I've just found out that there is a sequel to this and after i read that I'll write a review of that book. This book made Rocky pop into my mind b/c it was about boxing and the only thing that was different was that the boxer was black. Robert Lipsyte is a good author and if you want to read a book about real life and real drama, then you need to read this. He almsot makes me want to go out and live in New York and try to box. I'm not asking you to buy it, just read it. This author showed me something new in the world of boxing.
Rating: Summary: The Contender Review: The story begins when a man named Alfred is waiting on his friend, James. James is a drug addict and has forgotton all about Alfred because he is getting fixed. When Alfred walks into the clubroom he tells about lose cash in the Epstiens' store. James and his friends try to break in. Like most crimes, the leader got caught, who is James. He was sent on probation and Alfred didn't see him again until later. As the story goes on, Alfred starts going to the gym. Soon after, he meets an old man by the name of Donatelli. Alfred starts training and before he knew it he had his first fight. He won his match and the next one after that. Then, Donatelli told him that he was not to fight the next match, but Alfred didn't give up. At the end of the fight the winner was declared that the opponent had won. Yet, in a way Alfred had also won. What I liked about the book was the variety of emotions that took place and I also liked the characters.
Rating: Summary: Lindsey's The Contender Review: The book The Contender was a pretty good book. It showed real things. For example, it tells you all about boxing and that it is fun but that it comes with a big consequence, most of the time.
