Rating: Summary: Life lessons Review: Father Leufredus has taught Matilda how to read, speak, and write Latin, how to read and write in English, information about various saints, how to pray in different positions and at several times during the day, how to judge, all about the countless things that are wrong and bad for her, but he hasn't taught her how to listen, to love, to laugh, to dream, or to give of herself. He hasn't taught her what a friend is, or what it feels like to belong. But when he drops her off to apprentice to Red Peg the Bonesetter on Blood and Bone Alley, Matilda's journey to learning how to LIVE life, to find her talents, her heart, her friends, her home - where she belongs - has finally begun.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't keep my eyes of it! Review: I couldn't keep my eyes off of it! I usually have I hard time picking a book because I'm to picky. I also didn't want a long book, but when I saw it I had to read it. It was 159 pages long but oh well. I read It in 11 days and I read an hour at least a day and now I'm doing a report on it. I'll read this book again!
Rating: Summary: Matilda Review: I rated this book with 5 stars because it was a very funny but not very realistic. My most favorit part about this book is when she got Miss. Trunchbull back. Matilda is one of the main characters, she is my most favorit one. Matilda is a very honest, independent, strong, and bright child. That is why she is my favorit character.Matilda is a student at Crunchem Hall. Miss. Honey is my next favorit character, she is very intelligent, pretty, hard-working, and independent. she has blond hair, she wheres glasses, and she is a teacher at Crunchem Hall. The next main character is Miss. Trunchbull, she is selfish, she is light-hearted, and most of all she is proud. I don't like her in this book. She was Miss. Honeys aunt. I reccomend this to anyone who likes funny books.
Rating: Summary: Not my favorite, but I'll try to be as nice as i can.... Review: I read this book one summer's day... 72 degrees with a light breeze- not a cloud in the sky. I was in a great mood. Nothing to do, a lemonade in one hand, laying in a lawn chair on my porch. I was in the mood for a great book so I picked Matilda Bone. The summary makes it sound interesting and exciting but it really is simply B-O-R-I-N-G. I am an avid reader and have read several others of Karen Cushman. I have to say that she is not my favorite author. If you want to read a good book try A Great and Terrible Beauty, or my new favorite, Peter and the Starcatchers!
Rating: Summary: An interesting, but not fully involving book Review: I'm very interested in the medical field, and I found that the information in this book is captivating about the setting of bones and overall medicine of that time in Medieval England. There is also an Author's Note at the end of the book tying in the information very nicely. If you think about it,treatment of sickness was at it's barebones then; medicine today is extremely similar to medicine of that time, except more "sophisticated" today, if you will.Characterization: Now, onto the actual character content. I never fully got to feel for the main character, Matilda. It was almost like I didn't care what happened to her, she should have understood the morals that were so evident and just THERE that I was actually annoyed at her. But then I also started to realize that I am so used to characters that are so fictius that they just wouldn't be the way they were were written to be like in real life. Characters like Peg I grew fond of, as well as Tildy and Nathaniel. They were endearing to me, a quality I respect in characters. Overall characterization Observation: The characters are guilty of only one thing, being human. Despite Matilda's "seperation" from my interest, she really is believable in her character. Character interaction was mediocre, but to me was overall satisfying. Plot: The plot was about a girl named Matilda basicly attempting to find herself. Matilda began questioning what she knew, the difference between right and wrong. And in the process trying to uphold her religious values that she had been taught since a young age. Overall Opinion: I really enjoyed this coming-of-age book (I dislike the term, but it fits what I'm trying to say so perfectly...), but not in the way of the main character, but rather the supporting ones. Since reading MATILDA BONE I have come to realize the importance of minor roles in books, and how they tie in the information. The main character however, takes what clues they give her and makes decisions that will effect how she thinks and knows, basicly her values. Note: The reason I gave this book three stars is that MATILDA BONE happened to concentrate on Matilda. She was believable in her role, but she made the book slow to read during many parts in the book. However, she was an engaging character at times as well. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to have an entertaining read with them, as well as very intersting information about Medieval medicine.
Rating: Summary: Karen Cushman's Masterpeice Review: Karen Cushman writes a fabulous story about a girl called Matilda Bone, a holy, religious girl who is sent to work with a bonesetter named Red Peg in Blood and Bone Alley. At first, Matilda is repulsed with her work and seeks higher things than setting bones. She wants to meet people with better learning and more knowledge but she soon realizes her place in the alley is important and becomes content with her work. She also learns that there are different kinds of knowledge. I think that Matilda Bone is a good book that is well written with a fast pace and great characters. This book is descriptive and takes readers into Matilda's world and her situations, problems, and worries. I highly recommend this book to preteens because the story can be hard for younger children to understand. Matilda's worries and situations will keep you reading!
Rating: Summary: Another trip in time Review: Like Cushman's other female character novels, this book is light and easy to read. Giving us a glimpse of the life and work of medieval healers and yet not being too gruesome in detail, this story is an good choice for children interested in historical fiction. The main character, Matilda, is a perfect example the necessity to make one's own choices in life and to not be afraid to question one's self.
Rating: Summary: Light reading Review: Matilda Bone brought me mixed emotions. I loved the medieval setting, and the lessons on medicine, but that's about as far as it goes. Matilda is, to put it plainly, a spoiled brat. She is rude, narrow-minded, and very tedious to trudge through the story with. Her change of heart at the end is more of a relief than heart-warming. If not for the setting or a fairly humorous band of characters, I probably would have given the book up. I didn't, and I'm somewhat glad. Matilda Bone is good for light reading, but don't expect to be sitting at the edge of your seat or fighting back tears. The book is still but a seed in a field of ever-growing fantasies.
Rating: Summary: Matilda Bone Review: Matilda Bone by Karen Cushman was an excellent book. About a young girl in mideval times sent to apprentice the local bonesetter Red Peg, Matilda is upset and dissapointed. She is in shock when she finds that SHE is the one in charge of the "lowly" chores done for her at her previous home, a manor. However, having learned to follow instructions, Matilda tries her hardest to correctly do the jobs assigned to her by Red Peg. After making many mistakes, she finally gets the hang of her job, and actually begins to enjoy her new life in Blood and Bone alley. Overall, Matilda Bone is a wonderful read.
