Rating: Summary: Didn't Catch my Attention Review: I've read a lot of books! And this one probably the worst. It didn't interest me. I listend to the audio, and it didn't effect me more. IT was boring, The characters were ok, but I would have like to see more come between them, and more action. The authors are very well known authors, but this book shouldn't be on their best written!
Rating: Summary: Was interesting, but not "gripping!" Review: It would be much easier to verbalize this comment than place it in words upon this page, but here goes. The book was over rated! On the cover it is said that the book is "Gripping...Convincing and compelling." The action did not really get started until the 43rd chapter. I do think that the book was a good example of a religious cult and not what to get involved with in this day and age to come. The dangers that ocurred was quite real and could if not have already happened. Look at past history. Many people have died being involved in such ideas. There's kudos though to the two main young people who showed compassion and sensitivity to others. I would consider using this book in a small group of Jr. Higers for discussion. I had wondered if the authors had any Biblical background when they had written the part for the Rev. Beelson. A must read for education, but for entertainment? I think not. This subject is to serious to play around with and come out unscathed.
Rating: Summary: DEATH IS NEAR Review: THIS STORY IS AWSOME ITS ABOUT 144 RELIOGUS NUTS GOING ON A MONTAIN FOR A MONTH WAITING FOR THE END OF THE WORLD BUT TWO TEENAGERS JED AND MARINA ARE HAVING TROUBLE BEILIVING THIS THEY FALL IN LOVE AND... YOU'LL HAVE TO READ IT TO FIND OUT THE REST!
Rating: Summary: Astonishing Review: When I first bought the book, I read it in little snippits from beginning to middle. When I got to the half-way point, I could not put it down. The idea of religious cults is a powerful subject to be talked about in a book. But in this case, it mixes modern writing and a sense of adventure. Some people think having a book with romance and strange things such as religious cults is awkward, but this book shows to be the perfect blend, that everyone should enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Armageddon Summer Review: Yolen and Coville are a great combination. This book is great! You go through the two teenagers adventures of romance and religion. Their parents have made them go the the "mountain top" to be saved from the end of the world. This story gives you some idea of how religioous cults operate. These two authors need to hook up again.
Rating: Summary: Love, waiting for the end of the world/Summer 2000 Review: The topic of religious/millennial cults is a sensitive one. In the hands of less gifted writers, there would be a dangerous tendency toward the maudlin and the strident; and while this would be disaster enough in an adult audience novel, it would truly be unforgiveable in a book aimed at young adults. Not a problem at all here though; authors Yolen and Coville know exactly what they are doing and how to precisely say what needs saying without the least overstatement or soggy sentiment. As one who teaches composition, I marvel at these two and their ability to always find just the right word, phrase, sentence or paragraph; this novel would serve well as a model of precise and concise writing. And what a grand story! Two typical, but oh-so-slightly outre teens find each other and incipient romance while waiting for the end of the world on a mountaintop in Massachusetts. The characterization is superb as always with Yolen and Colville. Ms. Yolen familiarly exercises her virtuoso range from picture books like the powerful SKY DOGS to the enchanted witchery of BRIAR ROSE to the witty fun of WIZARD HALL and so much inbetween; while Mr. Coville here tries his hand (entirely successfully) at a slightly older audience than his usual, but so very exquisite MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN and JEREMY THATCHER, DRAGON HATCHER (this writer's favorite!). This present book combines their celestial talents sublimely. While fans of both will not be disappointed here, this engrossing page-turner has so much to offer not only young adults, but their longing-for-a good-read parental units as well. Yolen and Coville: More please!
Rating: Summary: Aramageddon Summer, an awesome book Review: "Seems the so-called believers camping up on Mount Weeupcut to wait for the end of the world have closed their doors and aren't accepting any new members into their club. That's not sitting too well with a number of new people who've suddenly decided they believe, too, and want to get up there to avoid being---as one of them put it---'fried with the rest of you sinners.'" Jed's dad is a believer, and so is Marina's mom. They are part of a cult that believes that the world will end in a blaze of fire July 27. The only 144 people who will be saved have to be up on Mount Weeupcut. And of course they've both dragged along their kids. Now if you were a teenager like Jed and Marina, what exactly would you be thinking? "Yeah right!" After they're up and settling on the mountain, another problem emerges. Jed has a crush on Marina, and vice versa. And to make things even MORE complicated, Jed went down to the entrance of the mountain to find it blocked off with men from the camp with machine guns. As it gets closer and closer to fry time, more people try to get in the camp. Oh, and heaven forbid there be more than 144 people being saved, so of course the cult members set up an electrical fence, and put out more men with machine guns. Then on the day before the end of the world, sunset rolls around and the fence comes down and hundreds of angry people come bounding in, starting an all-out war. The whole time this is happening, the book bounces back and forth from Jed to Marina. This gives a very good effect because you get to see the same incident happening, but from different points of view. Although the plot was very twisty and it was always hard to predict what will happen next, the best thing about this book was the way it was written. Every word seems to come straight from the characters' mind, as if the authors were really that person. Also, with so much suspense, the authors ended every chapter with a cliffhanger, (sometimes making you mad,) and that makes you keep reading. The book ends in a very clever way. I don't know about you, but to tell you the truth I would have never guessed the ending. It is just one of those books that once you get started, it's hard to stop. I enjoyed this book very much, and it was like no other I have read. It is very realistic, but I guess you would rate it sci-fi. This is surely one of the best books I've ever read, and I believe just about anyone who can read would like it. Reviewed by Mandie
Rating: Summary: Armageddon Summer Review: This story is about a girl, Martina, and a boy, Jed, whose parents pulled them up onto a mountain to await the end of the world coming, namely Armageddon. They meet and fall in love. Then they think, great, the first time we fall in love in our lives and the world is coming to an end. This is an excellent adventure book and I would recommend it for teachers, parents, and the 8th through the 10 grades.
Rating: Summary: BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN LOVE STORY! Review: My heading implies romance, but there is more than that in this exciting and amazing book. I really connected with the characters, especially Marina, because I read this book when I was in a fight with my own mother. This book, because it is written by two authors, captures the feelings and emotions felt by me, my friends, and other teens I know. I would recommend this book to someone seeking a touching read or a sweet love story. However, as a warning; even though this is full of religious themes, and does show us how we many of us feel about God, I wouldn't recommend it as a spirtual read.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I am 13 years old and do a lot of reading. I have read my share of good and bad books, and this one almost tops the good books list. I started reading it for a class project and couldn't put it down! I loved how it alternated between 13-year old Marina and 16-year-old Jed. These two kids really had a lot to deal with and Marina reminded me of myself (minus the family problems and the weird mom and all that). Jed was great, being a non believer and all. The book had a great plot, cute characters, and nice inserts about the schedule and what the FBI and radio personal thought of the whold idea. The ending was full of suspense and I was totally surprised by it. I would recommend this book to anyone! :)
