Somewhere In The Darkness
By: Walter Dean Myers
Review by: Leyla Mumin

Did you ever wonder What it would be like to be able to communicate with your father? Jimmy is having trouble with communicating with his father. So I would recommend Somewhere In The Darkness by: Walter Dean Myers, to a friend to read if they're having this problem. This book is good for both fathers and sons. Everything is wrong for him.
When quiet, sneaky, 14 years old Jimmy finally meets his father, trouble starts. He has to leave his grandmother, who he lived with for years. Whenever he tries to think about his dad, bad stuffs comes to his mind. He tries his best to accept his father for who he is. His father could never replace his loving grandmother.
Jimmy's life took a great turn around when his father just showed up. He can't live with his grandmother anymore. He's in custody with by his father. when he finds out that his father broke out of prison, he freaks out. He realizes that he's somewhere in the darkness with a stranger.
Jimmy and his father went off to a trip halfway across the country to visit his dad's old haunts. 'You mean you escaped from jail?' Jimmy is freaking out because he just found out that his father broke out of prison. He finds out that the cops are after them and they'll be caught in no time. He feels uncomfortable setting next to a stranger, who's also a fugitive. The cops are also after him. How would you feel if the cops were after you for something you didn't do?
After reading Somewhere In The Darkness, I learned that no matter what your father does he will be your father. You might not see your father for nine years but you're still related to him. To me this message means you should try to feel comfortable your father. To the society this message means if you don't feel comfortable around someone it would be best for you to not be around that person. You think your father is not a good father and he doesn't love you? You just want to wait until you read this book. And then you might want to think twice about your feels for your father.

Summary: Somewhere in the Darkness
Review: Everyone goes through a period of change from child to adult and Somewhere in the Darkness is Jimmy Little's coming of age story. This book is similar to The Outsiders but instead of a group of boys it deals with one boy coming to terms with his father and his father's past. Overall, this book has one central problem which keeps the story flowing into what is ultimately a satisfying ending. Jimmy Liitle is what most people would call a "slacker," but I think that he has a really active imagination. I think that he has an overactive imagination because he doesn't live with his mother or father and he uses his imagination to fill the void that he has. Jimmy lives with his mother's best friend, Mama Jean, because his mother is dead and his father is in jail for killing someone (however, he is falsely accused). One day Jimmy gets home from school early and he sees his father, Crab, waiting for him. Jimmy's father escaped from prison and he wants to find the one man who can prove that he is innocent. However, he law catches up with him in the end and Crab dies a sick man, chained to the bed in his hospital room. I think that the message in this book to learn to accept and learn to love. Jimmy has to accept that his father did not abandon him and that he was wrongfully convicted. I think that in the end Jimmy loves his father and is really sad when his father dies. Walter Dean Meyers writes with empathy for the feelings of his characters and he uses his language to convey intricate realtionships between his characters. Meyers combines compassion, tenderness, adn toughness in a unique blend that makes Somewhere in the Darkness a satisfying read.

Summary: Father and Son
Review: Have you ever wondered what it is like to live without a father? If you read Somewhere in the Darkness you will find out. I enjoyed reading Somewhere in the Darkness by Walter Dean Meyers because the book always kept my interest. The book is about a mischievous boy named Jimmy who has to try and make the best of being together with a total stranger, his father. I have never read any other book by Walter Dean Meyers but, I think this book compares to the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Both books have details about the boys needing their fathers. In both books they had to live without their fathers and make the best of it. The only difference is, in Somewhere in the Darkness, Jimmy gets a second chance to be with his father. Jimmy is a fifteen year old boy who does his best living without a father. He lives with his only relative,Mama Jean. She is the only person he has ever known and loved. One day, his father Crab, shows up at Jimmy's home. Jimmy has never met Crab because he was put in jail for murdering someone. Crab was never a real murderer and he wants to make sure Jimmy believes him. So, in order to spend time with Jimmy him on a long trip. Overtime, he eventually learns to love and trust his father through their many adventures and days together. Crab has bad kidney problems, and in the end of the book ends up dying. However, the death leaves Jimmy stronger and with more knowledge about his father. I like how the author describes everything in the book with details. For example, Walter Dean Meyers describes,"There was a breeze, not much, but it was something. It cooled his brow with it's freshness." This expression explains there was a breeze with every possible detail. I also like how Jimmy's character is described sometimes as a child and other times as a young man. For example, many times in the beginning of the book Jimmy gets upset with Crab and wants to go home. Later in the book, Jimmy is also very brave after Crab died. He was very strong and understanding. In my opinion, the book is very interesting and fun to read. I think the only discouraging part in the book is when Crab dies. I guess that is how the author wanted the book to end. It is sad because Jimmy was just starting to love Crab and to become a real son to him. I think the book proves a real point about making the best of whatever comes along during your life. For Jimmy, that is his father. For us, we will just have to wait and see. Overall Somewhere in the Darkness is great and I would love to read it again.

Summary: A Not-That-Good Book
Review: I found that Somewhere in the Darkness wasn't that interesting. Mostly the whole book happens in a car (exsept for the end). Because of Crab's kidney problems, you could never tell if he was or wasn't going to die. I wouldn't reccomend this book to anyone because it's not that exciting.

Summary: Somewhere in the Darkness
Review: I read Somewhere in the Darkness ans a summer reading book for my English class. I would rate it with three stars because in my opinion it is a good book though it is a little slow to get the reader interested at first but it soon has you hanging on to every word. Walter Dean Myers is a very good writer, though, and I would like to saythat he chose a very interesting topic to write about. I say this because I have never heard of another book about that topic, which means that that book is very original. I also admire the way that he writes, because it was a very good book.

Summary: Story: 'SITD'-Somewhere in the Darkness
Review: I thought this book was very good. I liked all the characters, especially Jimmy. I liked him the most because he is over-imaginative and he is the same age as me. I liked the fact that Jimmy?s father came home even though he was in jail and that Mama Jean turned out to not be his real grandmother. I also liked the way the author wrote the story.
What I liked most about this story is that it went deeper and deeper into the plot. I wasn?t happy when Crab died, it made me upset. I think the relationship between Crab and Jimmy was good. I think it was amazing that Crab came into Jimmy?s life, after so many years of not being around to be his father.
I might recommend this book, because it was interesting. Some parts of the story kept me interested to keep reading. I thought this story was funny but also serious. I found this story to be pretty good overall.

Summary: I Loved It!
Review: I was really surprised to see that most of the reviews for this book were negative. I loved the book when I read it in sixth grade and have been searching for it ever since. (4 years) I thought it taught a lot about self-worth and it actually helped me deal with some personal issues in my life at the time.

Summary: Adventure ,Drama And Comedy.
Review: In this Book it shows the love between a father and a son at all costs.Jimmy at first wonders what his father is like. At first he does not want to go with Crab but learns to execpt him as a father. At the End of this book it was quite depressing seeing them start to love eachother and Jimmy Watching His father die. I enjoyed this book because it had a little bit of everything. I would recomened this book to anyone who has a taste for adventure or drama.
