Rating: Summary: Rinaldi weaves a timely tale Review: Although Mine Eyes Have Seen is an historical novel set in the years preceding the Civil War, the personal story of Annie Brown could be one of any teenager who has faced the trials of living with an emotionally abusive parent. Rinaldi portrays Annie's life as the daughter of abolitionist John Brown as one where the girl alternates between trying to gain her father's favor and attempting to assert her own rights as a human being. The great irony that John Brown was, at the same time, preparing to give his own life and the life of his followers to focus the attention of the country on the rights of slaves as human beings is not overlooked by Annie or Rinaldi. As always, Rinaldi brings the characters from the pages of our history books to life for the reader, this time with an even greater resonance for today's society.
Rating: Summary: A Great Historical Fiction Review: Ann Rinaldi has written another great book! This book is recommended for anyone who enjoys historical fiction. If you like this one, read THE COFFIN QUILT by Ann Rinaldi.
Rating: Summary: Same old Thing: I do not recommend this Rinaldi Book Review: Changed the character, changed the scene, changed the time period, and abracadabra! Another Rinadi historical fiction. This is a very tedious and winding novel that just shows that Rinaldi is running out of time periods out of history. I thoroughly enjoyed her WOLF BY THE EARS, and COLONIAL AMERICA stories, but this book was just to rediculous. Maybe Ann Rinaldi should consider trying to act out the lives of people in Europe (Elizabeth I, Lady Jane Grey, Ann Boleyn) and drop the whole American theme. I'd give this book 1 star because of it's weak content and obvious historical remarks, but threw in an extra star because Ann Rinaldi is one of the best historical writers I have ever come across. If you're a new Rinaldi reader, try her other more great works, but if you have read all her other novels, just might as well read this one.
Rating: Summary: This book deserves 100 stars not 5 Review: I had to read this book for a report and was dreading doing so. But after reading it, I fell in love with it! This should be required reading for all kids!
Rating: Summary: Extremely Confusing Review: I thought this book was very confusing. There were so many brothers and sisters living in a bunch of different places with a whole bunch of kids.....it took a lot of concentraiton. In her other novels, Ann Rinaldi is fairly simple (in a good way) and you catch on right away and are totally into the book. Frankly, I didn't even get into the book.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I thought this book was very interesting. It taught me about one of the glossed over items in history. Rinaldi when through in detail the inner and outer struggles of Annie Brown. It also made me cry at the end because the ending is very sad.
Rating: Summary: SO DEPRESSING Review: I'd loved all of Ann Rinaldi's books so far, even though the military talk can be a little confusing, but Mine Eyes Have Seen was an exception. It was just so depressing. I wouldn't want to give it away to someone who is interested in reading it, but in the end I was just so shocked at what happened. The main character, Annie Brown, lives in a household where the father is very menacing and non-caring. He treats his children very badly. He only cares about his abolitionist views. While trying to create a raid against slavery, he forces Annie's brothers, her fiance, and people Annie comes to love to fight with no chance of winning. I wouldn't want to give it away, but people she cares about die. I was disturbed by the way she knew they were doomed, but spoke lightly of it. Her whole family was strange and tragic, and the way her father had a grudge on her because of her little sister's death by falling in a pot of scalding water just made me feel depressed. This was based on a true story, so there was no way that the author could have lightened it up a little, and it was still a good book, but I wouldn't really recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Amazing... and true, too Review: I've always greatly enjoyed books by Ann Rinaldi, and "Mine Eyes Have Seen" is great. It tells about John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry in West Virginia from his 15 year-old daughter's point of view. John Brown was an abolitionist who was greatly against slavery, and the raid at Harper's Ferry, the main point of the book, was one of his many attempts to crush slavery. This book is also sad, but it is definitely worth reading. I also learned so much about the real event, like all of her other books too. In History class, we were learning about John Brown's raid, and I felt like I knew so much about it because of this book. Even my teacher said that I knew so much about it, and I recommended the book to her, and she is going to read it, just like you should, too!

Rating: Summary: It was excellent, and very discriptive. Review: It was very interesting,a great book to take on a long trip. Most of the people from the book were real. After I read it,I was able to relate it to other information I found in History books. And while telling a very discriptive veiw of John Browns raid,it has an interesting side story. And another thing,It is from a veiw most people don't care to look at,and it helps you understand the raid. I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!!
