Summary: Beyond the Burning Time
Review: My name is Aravind and this summer I read Beyond the Burning Time. I think that the it was a great book. I liked the theme and the plot. I think that the story had lots of action and was fast (especially the ending). One more thing that I liked about Beyond the Burning Time was the supernatural sense of Kathryn Lasky's writing. The only thing that I didn't like was that the book ended to fast, even thought the ending was good. I couldn't put the book down. I liked this book and I think that it is much better than other novels I have read. I rate Beyond the Burning Time fours stars. My overall impression of the book is great and I would definitly reccomend this book to other people.

Summary: I found this book slightly dull.....
Review: Perhaps I found this book dull and not very interesting because I already knew the ending from studying the Salem Trials before reading this book. I already knew what was truly happening and why before the book was even a quarter of the way through. Another thing I found was that to me this book seemed below my reading level since it was actually a book required for us to read for our highschool English class. If you are used to reading high level books and are thinking on buying this book for summer reading, please don't.

Summary: Beyond The Burning Time is a captivating read
Review: Something is happening in Salem Village, and it is not good. In fact,it is pure evil. The townspeople are going witch-hunting crazy, and Mary Chase's, the main character of Kathryn Lasky's impressive book BeyondThe Burning Time, mother is a victim.
Beyond The Burning Time is an excellent historical fiction novel. Ms.Lasky obviously did a great amount of research before writing it, but nonetheless managed to keep the story entertaining and the characters intriguing. Told from the view-point of a twelve year old girl, it effortlessly portrays the confusion and madness of the time. Although the amount of
characters can sometimes confuse the reader, they add many different perspectives on the events, as well as allowing Ms. Lasky to incorporate more history into the novel.
Beyond The Burning Time is an excellent read for 6-8th graders.
Mary Chase is about their age, and therefore her worries over being accepted are very easy to relate to. In addition, the book is fast-paced and interesting. However, Beyond The Burning Time does not lose the historical aspects of the 1692 witch burnings.
Ms. Lasky has spun a capturing weave of lies, betrayal, and the human spirit. I recommend Beyond The Burning Time to anyone who is looking for a captivating read.

Summary: review on Beyond the Burning Time
Review: The book Beyond the Burning Time, by Kathryn Laskey, is a tale of the famous Salem witch trials. Set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, this book describes the life of a 12 year old girl, Mary Chase, during a terrifying time in America's history. Beyond the Burning Time has a lot of very realistic historical background information about the hanging of witches but the story does not have gory details that would be too scary for children. In the story Mary and her brother, Caleb, tried to rescue their mother, Virginia, who had been accused of witchcraft. Virginia was in prison and was about to be hanged for her crime.

The author also gives information about the characters that help the reader relate to the story. Even though Mary lived in an unusual time in American history, she was like teenagers today. Mary felt like an outsider because she lived on the outskirts of Salem village and had to help her mother keep up with the farm while the other girls socialized. Mary was interested in everything that was going on in Salem village, but her mother did not allow her to have anything to do with it. One night she was so fed up about not knowing about anything that was going on in the village that she sneaked out to her neighbor's house to see what the latest gossip was. Throughout the novel, Mary struggled with a lot of the same issues as many teenage girls today.

Mary's desire to be considered an adult and accomplish almost impossible things is an important theme of this book. Examples of Mary's bravery were when she stood up for what she believed in, didn't follow the crowd and saved her mother from being hanged for being accused of witchcraft.

The beginning of this book is a little dull and the many characters become confusing to the reader. However, after a while, the book is so full of excitement that the reader cannot put it down. By the end of the book, Mary and Caleb's plan to rescue their mother was successful. Captain Eli Coatsworth helped Mary and her brother to come up with a plan to rescue Mary's mother. Mary knew Coatsworth because the owner of the dolphin resort where Mary worked was a close friend of Coatsworth's. This book ends happily because the Chases and Captain Eli Coatsworth moved to Jamaica where Mary's mother and Coatsworth married.

This was a very realistic book about the time of the Salem witch trials. Even though it was a little confusing at times, anyone who enjoys historical fiction should definitely read this book.

Summary: Compelling and Factual
Review: The book Beyond The Burning Time, by Kathryn Lasky, was a compelling novel about the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. I enjoyed it cover to cover. The reader is transported back into a time of witches, lies, ignorance, and despair. The book captures you with its interesting plot, making you want to keep turning the pages. Told from a 12-year-old girl's point of view, the events unfold touching everyone. No one can escape the hysteria during this awful time. Mary, the main character, watches as her once quite town changes. Girls her own age, start to act in strange ways, having fits, seizures and twisting themselves into unnatural positions as if they were being attacked by black magic and witchcraft. The "afflicted" girls cause many innocent people to be persecuted, imprisoned or even hung due to untrue accusations of witchcraft. When Mary's mom, Virginia, is accused of witchcraft, Mary and her brother, Caleb, must find a way to help their mom escape and put an end to the Witch hunting craze.

Beyond the Burning Time is great reading for anyone who enjoys historical fiction or is interested in the Salem Witch Trials. Kathryn Lasky goes into great detail on the characters emotions, personal beliefs and how lies-upon-lies can touch so many. Many teenagers will find themselves identifying with Mary as she strives for acceptance, independence and faces difficult decisions, just as we do now.

Summary: Beyond the Burning Time - Book Review
Review: The book, Beyond the Burning Time is a novel about a girl who lives during the time when people believed in witches and witch craft. What I liked about this novel is that the girl and her brother use their creativeness to save their mother from getting hung. Their mother is the only one that they had and she was accused of using witch craft to harm girls in their town. They were very brave and saved their mother before she was hung. What disliked about this novel is that allot of people were hurt and many people lied in order to get other people killed. Another thing I disliked is that the way the author described the girl's outbursts was very gruesome. This novel is different from others that I have read because it is in a totally different setting than any other books I have read about witches. It is in the time when many people were being accused for abusing other people with witch craft.
I would recommend this book for people who like stories of witch craft and the olden days. It would also be good for people who like adventures/journeys when people make and help newfound friends. My impression of this book is not very good I think that he author could have written it better. Overall this book in my opinion is O.K. if you want a book that is about which craft this book would be a good choice

Review: This book really gave me an up-close look at the Salem witch trials and what went on there-from the perspective of a girl my own age. I couldn't stop reading!

Summary: I loved this book a lot and I really enjoyed reading it!
Review: This book was an exciting book to read. I could'nt stop reading it. This book tells a little bit of American history. I believe that the devil was actually manipulating the afflicted girls and the Reverends; because these Reverends executed many many innocent men and woman. Also, these "afflicted girls" had an evil mind because of their lies, many souls were lost. So I really do think that the devil was loose in Salem. Not controling the innocent people of Salem but controling those girls and the high ranks. Such ranks like the Reverend Deodat Lawson, and the Reverend Mather. This book is really sad and I would recommend it to readers that have an interest in American history like myself. I would also recommend the diary of Dorcas Good, a child witch of Salem. I have'nt read it but I've heard it is a good book. Even though it is a novel written in a diary form. I would also like to add that Kathryn Lasky is an excellent writer. One of my favorite. I also like her genre!
