Rating: Summary: Utterly enchanting; enough to last a lifetime. Review: A book's success is decidedly determined by it's staying power. In viewing previouly written reviews, I find that I am not the only woman in her mid-twenties, who has enjoyed this book repeatedly. I, too, first read this story as a young girl. I, too, have a copy stashed away with 'my favorite things' from childhood. I am 27 years old, now, with two children of my own. The box of 'favorite things' was long ago buried beneath old baby cribs, kid's clothes, and holiday decorations. On a recent trip to the juvenile section of the local library, to make a few selections for my youngsters, I spotted "Behind the Attic Wall". I checked it out, and delightedly took the journey to 'Maggie's world', once again.Maggie has been described as "bad", but I believe a more correct description is 'hardened'. She has suffered a great deal, in such a short lifetime, with virtually no guidance. She is constantly told what she SHOULD NOT do, and rarely instructed on what she SHOULD do. I believe that most of us have experienced this unfortunate method of child-rearing, doomed to continue making mistakes until we stumble upon the 'correct' way to do things. When Maggie IS told what she should be doing, it is frequently coupled with insults regarding her intelligence or personal appearance. Again, especially for young girls, this sort of child-rearing is devastating to one's self esteem. I believe the author did a wonderful job portraying the human heart, and all of its weaknesses and strengths. Maggie is 'hard' because she is fighting to love herself. She allows herself to be caught-up in a world of daydreams, because the real world is often cruel and bleak. This story is one of wonder, heartache, and joy. A lost little girl, an enormous empty world, and a mysterious secret that would release her from herself. I highly recommend it, no matter what your age.
Rating: Summary: just plain great Review: Behind the Attic Wall was a Great book. When I first read it, It had a kind of fantisy and wonder in it so that I could not put it down. I'm not going to write a lot so in a summery this book is great. See for yourself! (Unless you already have)
Rating: Summary: Behind the Attic Wall Review: Behind the Attic Wall An orphan named Maggie has been kicked out of almost every boarding school, moves in with her two great- aunts. Her aunts think that she is rood and despicable. She is basically an outcast and she likes the way she is. Then after living with her two great-aunts for a while, she starts to hear voices coming from the walls, she starts to pursue the voices but can't seem to find where there coming from. Aside from that, she's getting in trouble with her aunts because they think that she's stealing. So basically she is a regular problem child. I would probably rate this book a four because to me, it was just to slow, they didn't move fast enough for me. The only reason that I don't like the book is because I like suspense books that have suspense, this book was a suspense book with the littlest hint of suspense. The book took place at Adelphi Hills, an old boarding school that now only Maggie and her two aunts' live in. The building that they live in is old and gray and as Maggie describes it, " It looks like a prison." . The house inside was dark, and there were a lot of dark hallways. And a lot of history in it. The characters in the story were well described and I really felt like I was one of the characters. The main conflict in the story was between Maggie and herself. She was tring to find out who she was. And the foreshadowing in the story was, well, there really was very much foreshadowing in it, the only foreshadowing in the book, I don't want to give away!
Rating: Summary: Touching, Beautiful, Unforgettable Review: Ever since I was a child I've been an avid reader. I remember devouring this particular book when I was about 11 or so. Of the all the books I read as a child, this is perhaps the most unforgettable. It touched me in a way that few books ever did, or have since. The tale is not just about fantasy, or a child's imagination, but about love and the magic it inspires. This is a story of a young, deeply unhappy, unloved girl who befriends and grows to love the dolls in her aunts' attic. At the end, I couldn't stop the tears, even though I've never been a very sentimental person. Even today, I tear up thinking about this story. If you plan on reading this book, or getting it for your children, make it sure it's read in a quiet place with no interruptions. And at the end, be prepared to hug them and tell them you love them.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: Exactly! Like everyone else here, I read this when I was 8, and kept the story in the back of my mind for this long. I'm now twenty, and completely overjoyed to figure out what the title of this is again. Buy this book, it's awesome!
Rating: Summary: Every child should read this book! Review: I am 17 now but every once on awhile I reread this book because it is so enchanting. Very few children's book are enchanting nowadays but this truly is. I remember identifying with Maggie at times, because no one at my school liked me. I plan to pass my copy of the book on to my future children.
Rating: Summary: Formative Review: I can only echo the praise that other reviewers have heaped on this book. It is an inventive, beautifully written coming-of-age story in which an adolescent girl learns about growing up from the playthings that she must eventually leave behind. Cassedy has a wondeful eye for detail; the book is richly atmospheric, sensual, moving and subtly funny. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: My absolute favorite book as a child! Review: I can remember reading this book when I was in 3rd grade. My mother and I had been at the book store one day, and she picked it up saying that it looked like a good book for me. I shrugged and took it along with me. What I thought was going to be a story about a girl playing with dolls turned out to be the best book I had ever read as a child- I loved every minute of it, and I would recommend it to anyone, young or old!
Rating: Summary: Sensational Story Review: I first discovered this book in fourth grade and have read it over and over ever since. Sylvia Cassedy does a wonderful job of drawing the reader, and all of their emotions, into the story from the very beginning. It enthralls the reader on so many different levels that you will never want to put it down until the very last page, then again, you'll probably want to pick it up and relive the adventure all over again
Rating: Summary: my favorite book of all time Review: I first read this book when i was 12, I am now 27. After i returned it to the library I begged my mom to buy it for me which she eventually did(she always encouraged my reading). I still remember the whole story by heart since I have read it at least 20 times since. I buy this book for all the girls in my family and friend's families, when they are old enough to read on their own. I want them to experience it just like i did. It never fails to amaze me the look of wonder on their faces and I can not wait to see that look on both of my daughters faces.
