Rating: Summary: Unrealistic story with unrealistic characters. Review: This story was an extremely unrealistic and feeble attempt to write about a serious and grim time in our history, the Great Depression. The far-fetched plot of two young children running away from a household where their life was as good as it was going to get into a life of homelessness and uncertainty is atrocious. They knew that wandering around the country as hobos was risky in that they would barely be able to find food but still went away. This is also part of the reason that the characters are unrealistic. People in the real world would certainly not make these types of descisions, like leaving home for a life of uncertainty. Also, children in the real world would not have been able to fend for themselves nearly as well as they did. In reality, they probably would not have been able to survive, let alone find jobs around the country and different places to live. I definitely would not recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something relistic about the Great Depression.
Rating: Summary: This was a poorly written book Review: This book was horrible. The writing style of the author was not captivating and it left much to be desired. The characters could not be related to and seemed more like figments of the imagination. The horrible style of writing and poorly constructed characters are indicitive of an overall horrible book. Furthermore, I would not recommend this book to anyone, and would strongly suggest you never read this atrocious literary work.
Rating: Summary: I really enjoyed the book "No Promises In the Wind". Review: I thought that "No Promises In the Wind" was an execellent book. I recently read it because it was assigned by my 9th grade english teacher. You may not think that teens would enjoy this book but, pretty much all of us, the students, enjoyed it. It was fun to be able to "go through" the Depression with Josh and Joey. Also, Ms. Hunt did a very good job of depicting a teenager, Josh, changing from a child to a young adult. I would konw because I have and am going through this change, but I would have to say Josh had a harder time because it was during the Depression. So, take my advice and go out and read the book "No Promises In the Wind".
Rating: Summary: an excellent book Review: This is an excellent and well written book. I read this with my 11 year old son and enjoyed it as much as he did. However, he would not have been able to have understood it without my help. He did not know what the depression was prior to reading the book. There were many words and phrases I needed to translate for him. It is not appropriate for sixth graders.
Rating: Summary: This is a great book for boys or girls! Review: Irene Hunt's work, No Promises in the Wind is a great book about growing up during the depression. Hunt takes a look at the world of poverty through the eyes of a fifteen-year-old boy. She includes many different obstacles Josh must overcome such as poverty, death, trust, survival, and love. It is a great book for both boys and girls. I loved it!
Rating: Summary: No P romises in the wind review Review: No Promises in the Wind by Irene hunt is a book about two brothers struggle to survive during the time of the Great Depression. The two brothers Josh and Joey set out to find independence in a country with scarce resources. Josh and Joey run into many problems such as the death of a friend, starvation, and aggression. These young boys have to beg for food, and are often turned away because people barely have enough to feed their own families. There also are people who want to help them by giving them jobs, feeding them, and giving them rides when their feet are tired. My favorite character in this book is Lonnie, one of the people who help Josh and Joey; I like him because no matter how he is doing he takes time to help the boys. He helps them no matter what the cost, and never asks for anything in return. I can relate to Josh in some ways. For instance he is very stubborn. I catch myself being the same way. Once I feel a certain way about something or some one it is very hard to change my feelings. Josh is the same way in the book. Another thing is how he holds grudges like the one he has towards his father, and how he would die before going back. This is an accurate description of me. I like this book a lot. The writer really captures the struggles people were going through during the Great Depression. The author uses good characterization to show how people were feeling and how they changed during these trying times. For instance Josh's father was a nice loving man, but when hard times came he changed. Another example is the lady who scolds and turns Josh and Joey away for asking her for food. One could tell this is not in her nature because she runs after them and insists they come back and eat. No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt is a great read. I would recommend everyone read this book. If you are a person who likes seeing young people over come great hardships, then you will love this book.
Rating: Summary: terrific book Review: I had to read "No Promises in the Wind" 15 years ago in my seventh grade english class. It was one of the few required reading books I actually enjoyed. To this day it is still one of my favorites. I learned a lot about the Great Depression. It was a very realisitc books about the struggles families went through back then. It had it's sad parts but the end was very happy. The determination and love of the two brothers was inspiring. I hope more teachers promote this book. Irene Hunt is such a talented author.
Rating: Summary: Just Plain Bad Review: This is a great novel to use as supplemental reading material while teaching about the Great Depression in a seventh or eighth grade classroom. Students will really get an understanding of the devistation the Depression had on people of all ages as they read of the experience these two young boys encountered. Hunt's portrayal of the characters makes the reader feel as if he/she really knows the boys. The reader will begin to feel the characters diappointments and joys as they travel across the United States searching for work. Trust, forgiveness, family, and perseverance are themes that occur throughout the book. These, and the many other themes which occur throughout the book can provide a great basis for discussion in the classroom. This is a book that both boys and girls will enjoy.
