Summary: An excellent, moving novel.
Review: I got this book from my local library, and was a little nervous about whether I would like it or not. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I got so involved in the characters, I cried for them. This is not the first time I've cried when reading a book, but I really sobbed, something I've rarely done. I really felt for the characters, and it takes a great writer to involve you with his/her characters. I DEFINITELY recommend this book.

Summary: It inspired me!
Review: When I first got this book , I had no clue what I was looking at. When I read more into it , I realized that Gio and Marisol were like me in a way. It also inspired me to start a zine by myself , and she made the characters seem real. READ THIS BOOK@

Summary: a must read
Review: This is such a great book to read,if you like romance but not mushy stuff...In the book,John was really inspired by Marisol's zine he read, and wanted to meet her. When he did,he found out she was a "Puerto Rician Cubian Yankee Lesbian" not knowing for sure if he was gay himself he fell in love with her. and in the end...Well you'll have to read that for yourself! You should its really a great book!

Summary: Love is Hard, but Wittlinger makes it seem worthwhile...
Review: When I first checked Hard Love out of the public library, I didn't expect much. Although it sounded mildly interesting, I only got it because it was one of the few, new books that the library had gotten for young adults. However, as I started reading it, I began to identify with the two main characters (especially John). I think that what sets this apart from other young adult books is that the characters have average lives, but they turn them into something special. Also, as some of the other reviewers pointed out, they act the way REAL teenagers would. Not the stereotypes you see on television, but the kind who actually think about where their lives are going. All in all, Hard Love is one of the best books in its genre that I have had the pleasure of reading.

Summary: Alright....
Review: Hard Love was an alright book. The story of heterosexual male falling in love with a homosexual female is something that I don't find all that interesting, but Wittlinger did a pretty good job in telling the story. Marisol wasa girl that I really didnt understand much from the first time she was introduced, and I never could bring myself to like her. And John AKA "Gio" was just as weird. Though his dysfunctional family life was interesting the whole Gio/Marisol relationship bugged me. Its a good book, yes...but parts of it just really annoyed me.

Summary: HARD LOVE tells it like it is
Review: There are lots of trite, silly, and thoroughly unimaginative books out there that call themselves "young-adult novels." Their intended audience is supposedly teenagers, but most intelligent teenagers who enjoy reading good books quickly give up on the genre entirely, turned off by the one-dimensional characters and sometimes astoundingly bad writing. People my age (high school/college age) who love to read do NOT usually turn to the young-adult genre for our books.

HARD LOVE is the reason we should rethink our decision. For one thing, the writing is excellent, especially the dialogue. For another, the characters are entirely true to life, and Ellen Wittlinger is able to make you care deeply about what happens to them. (And they are decidedly NOT "teen flick" material, as the review from the Horn Book suggested!) She has also given her characters an interesting and emotionally complex story. But the best thing about this book is that it feels REAL. Everything about this book works, and it is a joy to read and reread. If you enjoy intelligent stories that are able to make you both think and feel, you must read this book, no matter what your age.

Summary: Fantastic!
Review: This is one of the most captivating books I have read in a long time. The story of a boy going through a difficult time when his mother won't touch him and his father couldn't care less is very well told. I especially enjoyed the human emotions, especially friends and family's reactions to John's lesbian friend. I would definitely recommend this book to just about anyone.

Summary: I couldn't put it down!
Review: Let me tell you one thing first, there are very few books I can't put down and all in all LOVE reading. This book is one of them. This book pulled me into the character's emotions and lack of emotions. The diolauge is witty and the story is marvelous. I would love to meet the author someday!
