Summary: An Absolute Tear-Jerker
Review: Stories of the Holocaust appeal to me, and this book did just that. All though I am not Jewish, this book still caught my eye. Nolan's changeovers in the book were absolutely captivating. His words roll of your tongue as if they were tiny pieces of candy. He evoked the secrecy of prejudism today, by bringing together to very different young girls.

As a teenager, I can fully relate to the type of humility it is to learn your family's antiquity. It is so "un-cool", as some may put it, to retrospect on ones life. A young girl, Hilary Burke, loathes the very thought of Jews. It takes a fatal car-accident and a look back in history as a Jew, for her to realize the torture and animosity it took for these human-beings to retrieve respect in common-day society.

"If I should die before I wake" is a compelling and a deeply written book, describing the living space and privacy of two young adults. Nolans portrayal is filled with melancholy and grief. It truefully brings tears to ones eyes.

Summary: One of the best books ever!!!
Review: This is one of the best books that I have ever read. It is one of those book that once you start reading it, it is hard to put down. The author of this book does a great job of explaining all the things that went on during the hollacost. The book is hard to follow in the begging but you understand it better after the first few chapters. It really does give you a better understanding of what went on and how the neo-nazi's treated the Jews. If I Should Die Before I Wake is an awesome book for teenagers or adults to read.

Summary: well worth it
Review: My 11 yo daughter and I both read this book. It is a powerful treatise on our sometimes twisted perceptions of others and the shock of finding value where we thought there was none. Well written and hard to put down.

Summary: It was Great!
Review: I had to read this book for a grad standard and ended up really enjoying it. At first I thought the beginning was a little slow but it turned out to have a lot of meaning. It was very descriptive and I was pleased with the authors work. She did a good job of describing the Holocaust from 2 different perspectives. I would definately reccomend it! Two thumbs up!

Summary: A bit rough around the edges, but still good.
Review: "If I Should Die Before I Wake" is Han Nolan's first novel and in some ways it is the best. In other ways, far from the best. The story is about a teenaged Neo-Nazi, Hilary, who's lying in a Jewish hospital after having been severly injured in a motorcycle wreck. In the next room is Chana, an old Jewish Holocaust survivor who is dying of cancer. While they are in their respective comas their minds sort of merge, and Hilary dreams about what happened to Chana during the Holocaust. When she wakes up, Chana is dead but Hilary is a changed person.

There are many strengths and weaknesses to this novel. Hilary's mother seemed kind of contrived. The part where Hilary's Aryan Nation friends set fire to the hospital was, in my opinion, totally unnecessary. I think it was meant to show Hilary's mother's love for her daughter -- she refused to leave the girl's bedside even when the building was burning -- but Han Nolan could have thought of a better way. Hilary's memories of life before the accident were kind of sketchy, and it was hard to comprehend why she'd join that fascist group. And the ending of the book, Hilary's awakening and encountering Chana's sister, seemed kind of fairy-taleish.

But Chana's story is brilliant. Without sensationalism, Han Nolan described to perfection what life was like for a European Jew in the thirties and forties: the ghettoes, scrambling for food, Chana's family members disappearing or dying one by one. My favorite character was her grandmother, Bubbe, but every one was poignant and believeable. The night after I read this book, I dreamed of Chana and Auschwitz.

I have read all of Han Nolan's books, and this is my favorite excepting "Born Blue". She is a brilliant writer, and in my opinion Chana's story in this book make up for all the other flaws. I highly recommend.

Summary: Educational Fiction...The Best Genre There Is!!
Review: The brutal reality of World War II is incorporated along with an enriching sense of fiction to form If I Should Die Before I Wake, a wonderful novel written by Han Nolan. Hilary became a teenage neo-nazi through the influence of her bad news boyfriend. When Hilary was hurt in a motorcycle accident with her boyfriend, he goes unhurt while she lies in a hospital bed in a deep coma. While in this coma, Hilary is thrown into the life of an older woman named Chana in the hospital bed next to her. She relives Chana's life as a young Jewish child growing up during World War II. She goes through all of the horrible experiences Chana was thrown into many years ago. She fights the feelings, but slowly Chana's life begins to have an effect on Hilary and her conscious. This book is geared towards teenagers of any age, because it helps give them a slight insight on the actual events of World War II, but through the eyes of a teenager so they can relate much easier. However, anyone could enjoy this wonderfully written novel. It is very intricate plot supported by a necessary beautiful use of characterization. Hilary and Chana are what makes this book so intriguing. Nolan uses their multiple differences to bring them together through one major similarity. This book brought anger, sympathy, but most of all utter disbelief into my eyes while I was reading it. This was my favorite piece of writing I have read all year. I would recommend it to anyone of any age or interest. It is an exciting book that keeps you wishing Hilary will never wake up so you can learn more about Chana's life through her eyes.

Summary: if i should die before i wake
Review: The book If I Should Die Before I Wake is an excellent Holocaust book. It is about a girl who is a neo-nazi and is struggling with the death of her father because of a Jewish boss. The death of her father because of a Jewish boss is the reason for this girl hating Jews so much. The book also is about a Jewish girl with her family who struggles to stay alive. The book switches between these two themes. The book starts off with Hilary, the neo-nazi, and her anti-Semitism. She gets in a motorcycle accident and goes to a Jewish hospital. Throughout the book Hilary fights within herself the anger at everything, especially the Jews. She does not hate her boyfriend Brad and the other members of a neo-nazi club. While she is in the hospital she has dreams of being a Jewish girl with a family she does not know. This other person she becomes is a little girl named Chana who is a Jew located in Poland near 1942. I like the way the book switches between Hilary and Chana. Each chapter either of these girls is talking. Chana is taken to the ghetto. She stays there for some years. The book has many intense areas that will leave you with a solemn feeling, yet others will make you smile and leave you with a happy feeling.
