Rating: Summary: another truly engrossing "call and gus" yarn Review: Thank you, Mr.McMurtry, for another fantastic installment to the Lonesome Dove series...I sure hope another is already in the works (one to fill in between Commanche Moon and Lonesome Dove? I'd be one of the very first to buy it...)Now, "hooray!" for all of the wonderful reviews here that I agree with. To the rest of you "nay-sayers" I say "Cmon, people...get real...loosen those ties that must be choking you and relax those sphincter muscles! Good grief, man! Commanche Moon is GREAT FICTION! A great, can't put it down, don't want to ever get to the last page, just don't want it to end story, with great characters, dialogue and events...all the stuff we L.D fans can't get enough of and come back for with tongues wagging. Sure there's some brutal torture and very bad treatment and disregard to women and children, but bad stuff like that did happen and don't kid yourselves, still does happen today in parts of the world. To all you "researchers" and "typo" complainers: Lighten up! It's a FICTIONAL STORY and a fantastic one, to boot! Give us some more, Larry!
Rating: Summary: I could not read it fast enough Review: I saved this one until I went to the Grand Canyon, figuring to read about hard country in a hard country portion of the USA. It was a perfect setting for a magnificent read. Call & McCrea, their adversaries and allies come to life in technicolor. Spent one day hiking the Canyon's South Rim, stopping to rest and read and what a way to enjoy this great portrayer of the American West. Don't think it would have mattered where I read it as it was quite a treat. Being in the Grand Canyon was just a bonus. I have yet to be disappointed in a McMurtry novel and these characters are full of life, color and verve.
Rating: Summary: A Pale Shadow of Lonesome Dove Review: For true fans of Lonesome Dove and its inspiring and unforgettable characters Augustus McRae and Woodrow Call, this novel will be a major disappointment. If you prefer to read about Call and Gus as a couple of cardboard cut-out buffoons off on a series of preposterous and hardly believable adventures, rather than the flawed but noble (and fully developed) characters of "Lonesome Dove", then go ahead and buy this book. But be prepared - even if you don't mind the lack of character development, the book has essentially no plot, and is just a sequence of disjointed events. Overall, a huge step backward by a writer who wrote what I and many others believe is one of the great American novels of the 20th century. I'm not sure why he bothered with this book, but I certainly wish he had done a better job.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have ever read. Review: If Lonesome Dove was required reading in school, (like Romeo and Juliet), the library couldn't print cards fast enough for students coming back for more Larry McMurtry. The book is that good. It is the best I have ever read, and I have read quite a few. If you plan to build your own book collection, this should be the first hardback to buy and keep in a special place.
Rating: Summary: Encompasses the spirit of the wild west. Review: Like all of Larry McMurtry's books, "Comanche Moon" truly caprtures the spirit of the wild, wild west. Through his descriptive and often thrilling narrative, you can get a sense of what it really must have been like back then-from the vast and breathtaking landscape to the hardships that comprised every day life. At once you'll be touched by the innocent and sweet way that men act towards the women that they fancy, and horrified by the extreme cruelty and violence of which they are capable. And for anyone who has enjoyed "Dead Man's Walk," "Lonesome Dove," and "Streets of Laredo," "Comanche Moon" is a must read. This book fills in any and all gaps left in the other three novels. Picking up where "Dead Man's Walk" leaves off, this books takes us through the middle years of the character's lives. You learn what really happened with Gus and Clara. This is your chance to meet Maggie, Call's one and only love, and Newt's mother. If you want to truly know and understand these characters, this volume is a necessity. But whether you are an avid McMurtry fan, or this is your first experience with him, "Comanche Moon" is a first rate, highly enjoyble yarn.
Rating: Summary: It's not Lonesome Dove Review: A weary tale with some interesting character developement (but not much) that seems to fill in some of the questions preceeding Lonesome Dove, but whats with all the torture (he seems to relish it) and story lines that go nowhere?I couldn't wait for it to end which it did finally with out resolving much.
Rating: Summary: True to the original direction of the lonesome dove saga. Review: Larry McMurtry has redeemed himself for the fiasco that is "Streets of Laredo" with the second prequel to the original "Lonesome Dove". The characters are presented as true to the vision of the lives of Texas Rangers on the frontier and at the same time developed the supporting cast to a far greater extent than any previously seen before. The story is well-paced and brings the story of Call and McCrae to a satisfying conclusion.
Rating: Summary: A Pleasure To Read Review: Forget about plot and character development and read McMurtry's books for the dialog. It isn't that this book is lacking in plot or colorful characters, it has both. But it is the dialog that makes it a pleasure to read.
Rating: Summary: This is one book that deserves extra-credit! Review: This book is WONDERFUL anyone who reads it will definitly fall inlove with each and every character. It has a tale of strength, heartache, courage, and love. What I would love to know is, "When will C.A. write a book about her Character Amy, who plays the heroines sister?".
Rating: Summary: The best of the best from the best! Review: I can not believe anyone can find something bad to say about this book. It has it all! Keeps your attention and makes you feel like you are right there riding along with Gus and Call. It makes you feel like you are entering an era of the past. McMurtry is one of the best western writers i have ever read! The Lonesome Dove series has proved to be one of kind. I hope they make a movie!
