Rating: Summary: Memories of Summer Review: "Memories of Summer," by Ruth White, is a wonderfully-written teenage-based story about the Compton family who move from a small Virginia town to the huge city of Flint, Michigan. On Summer Compton's sixteenth birthday, her father tells her and her sister Lyric that they have raised enough money to move and they are overwhelmed with joy. They hurriedly move out and are on their way to starting a better life-or so they think. On the first day of school, thirteen-year-old Lyric comes home and is down in the dumps. No one talked to or introduced themselves to her. She thought that it was the worst that could have happened, but she was wrong. Her older sister, Summer, came home from high school and said just a few words. She just moped around and refused to ever go back to school again. Nevertheless, a day home from school turned into weeks which turned into months which turned into years and then a lifetime without ever going into school again. Lyric, however, went back to school the next day and made plenty of friends. In a few years, something set off a "seed" in Summer's mind that changed her life forever. She was diagnosed with a disease called Schizophrenia. The doctors had nothing to do but send her away to Pontiac State Hospital and Mr. Compton and Lyric started a new life without her. *Sarah

Rating: Summary: Memories of Summer Review: *****= The book Memories of Summer is by Ruth White. This book is wonderful. One reason was that this book was very touching because of how the sisters stayed together. It is about these two girls, Lyric and Summer. In this book, these two sisters lose their mother while living in Glory Bottom, Virginia. The dad told the girls that they would be going to move to Flint, Michigan. The girls find the good news on Summers 15th birthday. Then they move into this very small apartment. After a few days in Flint, Summer becomes mentally ill. She just really starts to act weird. The doctor told Poppy that one day Summer would be so bad they would have to put her in the mental hospital. Read the book to find out more.
Rating: Summary: Disappearing Girl Review: A Review by LauraLyric and Summer are the best of sisters. In the beginning they live a simple life in the hills in Virginia. Then they move to Michigan with their father to start a new life. Summer has a mental illness that is triggered by the move and change of schools. Summer starts to loose control and the illness takes over causing extreme trauma and hardship in their new life. The family is torn. What will they do to bring Summer back? I liked how this book was written from a young girl's perspective. It shows how difficult young life can be and how you have to do you best to deal with the hardships. It showed a true character of an early teenager. I didn't like how most of the book was dreary but that was how it was meant to be. If you want a happy book you might want to try something else. I do like how the book was written. The author used dialogue that was realistic and represented the time and place that the characters were in. It was a believable story...sad but it was the truth of life. I would recommend this book to people who want a serious read. It is a book of sadness and a book of family problems. I enjoyed it and it wasn't hard to understand.
