Rating: Summary: One Of the Best From Voigt Review: If you have read the begining of the Tillerman series you know the true end to this book, it also clarrifys many things about the first books in the series.Of All of the Tillerman books this was by far my favorite. Through Bullet's quiet and reserved nature you learn new things about yourself and about how you trully view others. The story starts slow but as I neared the end of this book I could not put it down. Bullet, Abaigail and Tamer become so real to you as you read. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quick good read and for anyone who questions, as a teenager, how they view other races/classes. An amazing novel for teens and adults alike...
Rating: Summary: Average Review: Maybe it's because I was forsed to read it for school, but I did not enjoy this book very much. I kind of found it confusing and irritating. The whole book's story is told from his mind, so you're like reading his thoughts about everything. That's fine if you agree with what he thinks about racial issues. I didn't, therefore his racist mind had me agrivated. It's a personal preference, but I did not like it that much. It's an OK read.
Rating: Summary: Boy, oh boy Review: The first thing that came to mind when I read this book was that Voigt certainly has an unusual style. Voigt does have a knack of creating strong, addictive plots, and of course providing the unique, unforgettable characters to see the plot through. But till now, Voigt's most complex and unique character lies in "The Runner" -- Samuel / Bullet Tillerman. Reading about him sends you into a whirl. Bullet is a strong-willed, stubborn and hot-headed youth. He lives by his own rules , and that includes his domineering father, his prejudices towards the 'coloured' community, his love for cross-country running, and even his opinions towards the draft (This story was set at the time of the Vietnam Civil War). Having a mind of his own, Bullet finds himself really different, in his opinions and his thinking , and in the way he behaves. It's really simple, Bullet lives his life the way he wants to , and nobody can stop him. Nobody can make that change. Voigt's bold descriptions flesh out the characters in this book perfectly, especially Bullet. Voigt also tells this tale in a wildly original way. She sets her opinions down in this book, and argues about them at the same time. She pretty much covers up all the aspects of the issues she tackles in this book, which include family ties, teenage rebellion, racism, politics and war. In a way, she's arguing with the readers, challenging them to think, to look at matters in a different light. Voigt really understands young adults, I'll give her that much. This book has a tangy and refreshing aftertaste, and it is a must-read for all young adults and all parents who really want to understand their kids. "The Runner" is wonderfully entertaining, making education through this book outrageously fun. Trust me, Voigt only produces books of the finest quality.
Rating: Summary: The Runner Review: The Runner by Cynthia Voigt was a good book. I thought that it was interesting and it was very informative. It showed that people can change if they want to and put there mind to it. Cynthia Voigt did a great job when she wrote this book. It is one of the better books that I have read. I would recomend this book to others if they want to read a good book.
Rating: Summary: Voigt's best book yet! Review: The Runner follows the life of a guy named Bullet, a fantastic runner, who is surrounded by a lot of turmoil in his life. An excellent book, as all of Voigt's books are, with a shocking end
Rating: Summary: An Enjoyable Read Review: The Runner is a interesting book that tactifully deals with issues such as Vietnam and racism. It is moving at times and one cannot help liking with Bullet, the main character, despite the fact that he is somewhat bigoted and ruthless. The ending of the novel is simple and superb, with powerful emotion that makes it joy to read. By writing in a refreshing yet simple manner Voigt has managed to sustain one's interest thorughout the book, however the plot does seem very predictable and stale at times. Overall, this is an enjoyable, occassionally involving read, however there are better books available on similar subjects.
Rating: Summary: The Runner is an excellent book. Review: The Runner is a well written book that tells a very realistic story about life during the Vietnam period. It has an excellent plot and you can feel what the characters feel, think what they think. The book talks about racism and democracy. The Runner shows strong feelings and emotions. A person can feel that they are actually part of it, for they can picture visually what the characters are going through. The main character thinks differently than anyone else you'll ever read about.
Rating: Summary: The Runner Review: The Runner was a good book. I read the whole book and barely ever felt bored. Yet I rate The Runner with three stars because it was hard for me to understand and of little interest to me issue wise... because I did not grow up in the sixties. I grew up in a very open-minded family many years after the sixties had past. It was hard for me to understand the racial tension that Bullet felt . I did not understand the woman's "position" was at home, that was hard for me to grasp. Yet in the same tone, it was a good book for me to read. Mainly because of the fact that I did not understand many of the issues families and people faced in the sixties. The book is literture, but it was part history lesson too. The book showed me how society is changing a little all the time for the better.
Rating: Summary: The Runner Review: The runner was a great book. I could relate to some of the problems bullet was going through. The book covered some issues that young people still face today. The book fits great in its time frame. However, I did not like the ending. It ended all to quick and not enough detail about the family and what all happened. I would not read this book if I didn't have to.
Rating: Summary: Matts THE RUNNER Review Review: The Runner was about a kid named Bullet and he is a great runner, that is all he likes to do. Bullets dad is not a nice guy, he always boxes bullet in, by not letting him do what he wants. Bullets brother and sister were run out of the house, because their dad was that big of a jerk. Bullet was the best runner on the cross country team. Bullet being realy selfish and he ran only for himself. If the team needed help from bullet he would decline. After Bullet told the coach that he did not want to help he got kicked off the team. Lator on Bullet finally did the right thing and helped out the team and they ended up winning the championship. After all the excitment Bullet enlisted in the military and was killed for a sad ending.
