Review: Excellent book, worth purchasing. Those wishing to give it a test run should read it online on bartleby.com.

Summary: Still the One
Review: I have a couple of other reviews somewhere in this batch but its been a long time since I wrote them. I just want to say that "The Elements of Style" is still the one in my book. I just got my first young adult novel accepted for publication today and I owe so much of that success to "The Elements of Style."

It has past the test of time . . . use it like I did and watch the success roll in.

Summary: are you serious?
Review: A high school teacher told my class about seven years ago that this book would be a good investment. So I read it. I've heard people since I've purchased this book rave about it. First, a college grad or competent high-schooler should alrea be well-versed with the "info" in this book; so, second, it's not very elucidating on the speicfic troubles a wrier may run into. Three stars since it's a good "overview." I've always found Diana Hacker's A Writer's Reference very helpful, though it's kind of pricey, but, as they say, you get what you pay for. grammatical pun intended.

Summary: The absolute authority
Review: In honor of the great William Strunk, I will attempt to heed one of the basic rules of this little book and omit needless words. So, in brevity....

The Elements of Style should be mandatory reading for all who dare to pick up a pen or pencil or sit at a keyboard.

The rules are simple, clearly explained, and highly effective.

E.B. White has softened the otherwise harsh tone (incurred by the brevity) by adding some chapters at the end on style and such and by touching up Mr. Strunk's thoughts here and there. Excellent job.

Read this book, read Stephen King's On Writing, write about a million words of your own for practice, and you'll be good to go.

Was that brief enough, William?

Summary: A literary gem that is as timely as it is timeless
Review: This book is a literary gem that has all the ingredients of a masterpiece that will stand the test of time. It is handy, appealing and very useful. I have seen it in a list of the top 100 non-fiction books of all time and it is also on the top of my list of aids to English.

I have yet to find an equivalent in the way the authors articulate the elementary rules of usage and elementary principles of composition. The pointers on the usage of words and style of writing are also invaluable.

This book is as timely as it is timeless. I see myself writing with more confidence, vigour and impact.

Summary: Simply the Best
Review: I have never read any other book on grammar that was remotely interesting. This is literature. I sometimes go back and reread the rules listed here just for the complete pleasure of reading Strunk and White's words. With this very thin book, any writer is prepared for art as excellent as that of E.B. White. He helps us get from Engfish to English- from writing incredibly verbose and inarticulate prose that proceeds on and on interminably with humongous words, to a precise language weeded of anything extra. Much of what little writing skill I have I owe to this book.

Summary: A Writer's Indispensable Companion
Review: I recommend this book to anyone. Even if you only write the occasional e-mail, "The Elements of Style" is a worthwhile companion for the most casual of writers. The book is clear and concise, weighing in at less than a hundred pages. The 4th edition does not stray from the formula of previous editions, but it does add a handy glossary and modernized examples. If you own the third edition, there is no practical reason to go out and purchase the new edition.

Summary: Fourth Edition - Words As Tools
Review: "New Edition". Now includes a Glossary in the back pages with at least sixty words and phrases such as; "adjectival modifier" and "modal auxiliaries" clearly explained. As with the 1979 Third Edition, my recommendation is to begin this book on page 66 and read the twenty-one reminders that follow, (which may remind you of your own writing), before you ever write another word. -author- "Mechanics & Owners Guide 1941-1959 Harley-Davidson O.H.V. Summary: An Approach To Style
Review: Start this book on page 66, then read the twenty-one reminders that follow. They may make your skin crawl, but you need to read them before you ever write another word.© Kirk Perry
