Rating: Summary: Winter of Fire -- Sherryl Jordan Review: In Winter of Fire, Sherryl Jordan portrays a world where segregation and discrimination are part of everyday life. This contemplative story depicts the spirit of Elsha, a young harsha, as she fights to overcome the rule of the Chosen over the Quelled. The world during this time period is divided between the Chosen and the Quelled. Elsha is one of the Quelled: a branded race forced to mine coal to warm the ruling, the Chosen. One simple defiance against the Chosen would mean certain death for a Quelled. Only Elsha dares to question her place as a slave. "I could no longer submit to the arrogance and scorn of the Chosen; I simply chose to remove myself from the people who humiliated me" (113). Little does she know how her determination will change her people's world forever. The world is a black, desolate place with fire as the only source of heat and light. The Quelled are the ones that mine these precious firestones, day and night, overseen by the Chosen who treat them like animals. Elsha's vision is so strong that she must go against all Chosen to find equality for her people, who slave away. For the Quelled she is light in a world of darkness, and for the Chosen she is a dangerous fire that needs to be extinguished as quickly as possible. Many conspiracies lie in her path, but her will provides hope and a future for her people. Her bravery and strength of will add an eminent touch of wonderment, that keep you reading to see what happens next. This eloquently told tale of prejudice and oppression brings to mind many problems in our world today. The story will leave a lasting impression on your judgemental thoughts towards others, and provides a real and earnest lesson for all of us. You should read this book if you are looking for a fun, intriguing time, and an excellent, sometimes puzzling sequence of events.

Rating: Summary: Winter of Fire-a childs point of view Review: The book "Winter of Fire" is a wonderful book that confronts the issue of discrimination. It tells of a inslaved women who has the power and will to change the way of things. With her power and friends she conquers the discrimination of her people and helps this futuristic world that they live in.
Rating: Summary: Why I like this book. Review: The reasons why I liked this book alot is because I think it realates a little to me. Not by the mines and Chosen and Quelled. But by the way she always felt like an outcast. That is what I feel all the time. I am glad that in the book she really beleived that she could divine and not let the Chosen tell her that she was crazy. When I read this book I could actually feel her pain and suffering.
