Rating: Summary: One of the Greatest Books of All Time Review: A slave woman sentenced to death (for slacking off) is rescued by the most powerful man in the world. Installed as his handmaiden (a highly covetted position normally reserved for the females of the most prestigious families), Elsa is granted the unique oppurtunity to see the world outside of mine where she was born. However she never forgets where she has come from or what she left behind.
Raw determination overcoming adversity is a common theme in books of all genres. What makes this book unique is that Sherryl Jordan was overcoming adversity of her own when she wrote Winter of Fire. Jordan's own determination gives her writing an edge that enhances the story quite a bit. Furthermore the plot is tightly woven and progresses in a way that is very believable.
Rating: Summary: A book worthy of recognition... Review: Elsha is a very well defined character, her emotions like those of a real person. She is torn beween her position and her heritage, the Firelord's handmaiden or simple harsha. Even the setting, the frigid world of Galenia, is wonderful. Though desolate, it commands a kind of respect from the reader, like a living breathing creature.
Rating: Summary: A young slave's quest to make her people's lives better. Review: Elsha of the Quelled is a young slave who is chosen to be handmadden to the firelord, the most powerful being a world covered with ice and snow. When she is traveling with him, she sees what a cruel and hateful world she lives in, and wants to change it. When traveling to a special ceremony, a terrible thing happens to the firelord, and Elsha is forced to make a decision. This book tell the sad but triumphant story of Elsha of the Quelled and her battle again the Chosen.
Rating: Summary: This was one of the best books I have ever read! Review: Elsha, handmaiden to the Firelord, is living in a world of darkness and a world of hatred. As she fulfills her dreams and provisions, she faces many obstacles to overcome. When the Firelord dies, her heart is broken, for she shared a special love that she had never felt before. When she finds out the truth about the Quelled, she rages with fury and is determined more than ever to become Firelord to change the laws and way of life. The Chosen fought to keep their laws but were defeated and finally after many battles gave in. Because this was a matter of life of death, they had no choice. Elsha then found a way to keep warm without burning coal by using your mind. She taught as many people as she could and soon almost everyone could do it.
Rating: Summary: loved beyond words Review: Even though this book is loved beyond words i will try to describe it for you. It's about a teenage girl and her struggle against prejudice. It left me a changed person, inspired to live my life differently. I was also inspired to write this review by the worst review of this book I have read. That review was from Kirkus reviews. They stated that the main character sounded like a "walking essay", and that the relationshipes throughout the book were "confused rather than complex." This review is a far cry from the actual book and the reviewer has failed to find the message in the book. The book taught me about the struggles people will endure when fighting for something they believe in. Being a young black woman (now years after my first reading of the book) I applied this to my life and strugglers I have had to endure. This is a great book for young women to enjoy. I strongly recommend reading this book, and hope it will become one of your favorits too.
Rating: Summary: IT WAS AN AWESOME BOOK! Go Sherryl, go Sherryl! Review: From the second I read the back cover, I loved it. I knew that it was a book I would love to read. But can you believe those people from Kirkus Reviews? Did you read what they said about that wonderful book? What kind of people are they? The book was great! What is your problem, Amazon?
Rating: Summary: A Book for those who have a hard time staying interested Review: I am not a reader of many books. I cannot seem to find a book that can keep my interest for very long and i almost never finish a book. There are 3 books that have caught my attention and heart. Winter of Fire is one of them. I have read this book over a dozen times and find myself wanting to start reading it all over again when i am finished. It is hard to express how i feel about this book in alot of words. All i can say that it is outstanding! The determination of the character and the beauty, love and chaos of the book so well written i can literally see it unfolding in my minds eye. That is when a book is truely a great when you feel you are there living it with the character. It is certainly a must read. I had this book for a long time and since lost it. I have found it here in this amazon web site and will surely own it again with the great price here!
Rating: Summary: Nothing else quite like it. Review: I first read this book as part of a children's literature class in college and, even though I've read it a dozen or so times, every time I read it, it still moves me to see the world differently. Elsha is a true role model - a strong woman who follows her heart, rather than passively accepting the status quo. I taught this novel to my sixth grade class every year that I taught and I still get letters from students raving about this book. I was crushed when I discovered that is was out of print. What a tragedy!
Rating: Summary: After 6 years, it's still great. Review: I first read this book back when I was in the eighth grade. I remember checking out from the library every week just to reread it over and over again. Now I'm a sophomore in college and after finding this book again, it burns a fire in my heart. A hidden classic in a world of prejudice. Read this book and find a fire within you that could change your world.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I first read this book in 7th grade because I had to to earn points for a reading class. I was so angry at having to read things against my will, and put off reading this book for as long as possible. however, after a few minutes of reading... I was engrossed in this book. It was so amazing... with so many levels of meaning. I encourage all to read this book and experience it for yourself.
