Rating: Summary: A great book if you love Roald Dahl Review: I have always love Roald Dahl books especially The Witches. I think that Roald Dahl does good short stories because I like the way he left you sort of hanging at the end. It is a good book for 4th to 6th graders because of the language and the way it was written. I really would reccomend this book.
Rating: Summary: Quite Okay! Review: I have read a number of Roald Dahl's story. I find that this collection of short stories is quite funny, but when comparing with other Roald Dahl's books, this book seems not as interesting as the others. But if you really want to read, I recommended the first story THE BOY WHOO TALKED WITH ANIMALS since I think this is the most funny one.
Rating: Summary: Thanks for the memories... Review: I have very few happy childhood memories, and I can honestly say that this book is part of my happiest one. The only time I ever felt really safe and at peace with the world was one snowy evening when I was 11. I was sitting up in bed with a steaming cup of tea, reading the story of Henry Sugar. This was such an uplifting story which shows the decency of human beings...I heartily recommend this book to readers of all ages. You really can't go wrong with a Dahl book!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Wonderful!! Review: I love this book! My favorite stories in this collection are the story of Henry Sugar and The Hitchhiker. They are memorable and funny and very cleverly written. Children of all ages (1-101) can appreciate these works, as well as Roald Dahl's other novels: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and The Witches just to name a few. Lots of his stories have become movies, which are great also, but not as great as reading them yourself! He is my favorite children's author, and hopefully, he will become yours too!
Rating: Summary: excellent slightly subversive roald dahl Review: I love this book! The stories are great for adults and wiser kids, and feature magic, suspense, and roald's edgy humor. Great for the grownups who loved Danny Champion of the World.
Rating: Summary: Peverted my Way of Thinking Review: I read The Wonderful Story of Henry. . . when I was about ten. It really, really bothered me to the core. I wasn't as imbued with violent images as most kids these days. I was thinking about this book and the effect it had on me after thinking a little bit about the massacre that happened in Colorado today. I don't think a book would cause me to perpetrate heinous, heartbreaking, violent crime, but I remember how angry and scared this book made me feel.
Rating: Summary: Entrancing but disturbing Review: I read this book as a child and loved it. However, it was hard to tell reality from fiction and I didn't know whether to believe Henry Sugar's powers really existed. In particular, "The Swan" is a VERY disturbing story without the usual comedy found in Roald Dahl's works. I recommend reading this yourself before sharing it with your children. I loved everything else he wrote, but this was frankly disturbing.
Rating: Summary: Amazing enough to perpetuate rumor Review: I read this book when I was 12 years old, and now again 20 years later. These are the types of short stories that immediately suck you in...entertaining fiction with just enough reality thrown in to make you think that some of the things that happen really ARE possible. Dahl does a marvelous job with his story-in-story-in-story styles on all five of his works. The other two are his personal accounts of how he became a writer and the original text of his first non-fiction publication, "Piece of Cake." I highly recommend this book for just about any reader. I don't want to give the stories away in this review, but the one thing I will say is that except for the two pieces I mentioned above and the "Mildenhall Treasure" story, NONE OF THE PEOPLE OR CHARACTERS IN THE STORIES ARE BASED ON ANYTHING REAL, despite Dahl's convincing rhetoric to the contrary. It is all COMPLETELY made up. I remember being left wondering for years if Henry Sugar was actually a real person, or even based on a real person, and it was a long time before I finally learned the real truth that he is completely fictitious.
Rating: Summary: A Scrumdidilyumous read for the broad minded! :) Review: I supurb read that is filled with wacky ideas and exciting interpritations that with fill your mind with thoughts to last for hours. For those who can understand the concept of having fantasy mixed with humour and excitement that opens your mind to new concepts. Indeed enjoyable and recomended by me truely.
