Rating: Summary: A Must-Read!! Review: A captivating historical novel, with a unique blend of romance, suspense, friendship, excitement, betrayal and a historical insight into both Queen Mary's intriguing life and the customs and viewpoints of the Elizabethan time period. This book has a clear voice which takes the reader on an emotional and psyhological journey, allowing them to relate to the characters and relationships portrayed. Incorporating both the facts known about Queen Mary and her life, as well as the fictitious element of some of the characters, I would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages, especially those interested in the touching, tragic fate of Queen Mary and her mysterious times.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: An enjoyable read. With historical fiction there will always be those who question the accuracy of the work, this book is no exception. I myself gave some credit to the authors for the legitimacy of the content. Even those who do not feel the historical content fully accurate must admit the novel itself is excellent.
Rating: Summary: Worth reading Review: Anyone who wants to learn exactly what happened to Mary Queen of Scots should go read a BIOGRAPHY! I'm sure the authors did not intend this book to be the sole resource for writing a report on Mary's life. This is a excellent book. I found my self absorbed into Nicola's world, oblivious to everything around me. A good book does that. Clearly the dialogue was well thought out in this book, because not only did Nicola's witty jests make sense, they were funny! I would recommend this book to anyone simply looking for a great read.
Rating: Summary: extreamely entertaining Review: I am a royal history fanatic. This book is amazing. It's not all history, but that's the good part. Kids need to THINK when they read books. When I read it, Nocola jumped out of the text and made history.... lets put it this way. I knew how she felt. I could understand it. This is a wonderful book. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It's that good.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: I bought this book not expecting much, just a week read. Instead I got a sensational book! Not only were the characters amusing, but they seemed like real people! (Okay, so a lot of them were. Jeesh, give me a break!) I almst felt that I knew Mary, Queen of Scots, if not only for a brief second. That is a hard thing to accomplish, and the author(s) did it perfectly.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best!!! Review: I checked this book out from a local library and fell in love with it. It is full of suspense and keeps you turning the pages. I could barely put the book down. After I finished it I wanted to pick it back up and read it again! I enjoyed this book because it had a mixture of humor, love, and suspense.
Rating: Summary: A book to keep forever Review: I got this book and could hardly put it down for the next three days. "Queen's Own Fool" is about a young girl, Nicola, who just happens to meet Mary Stuart. Nicola is a traveling performer and then becomes Queen Mary's fool. Nicola follows the Queen everywhere, including into imprisonment. She is there when Francis, Mary's husband and good friend, dies to comfort her. She travels to Scotland and reminds the Queen that she is only mortal. Nicola befriends few people, but the ones she does meet prove to be more that true friends. This book had me laughing at nine-thirty at night and practically crying an hour later. I would definatly recommend this book to anyone who is the least bit interested in Tudor England or Mary, Queen of Scots. I would also recommend "Mary, Queen of Scots, Queen Without A Country" too. This book may seem a bit large for some younger readers, but don't stress, it will end when it ends. When I finished, I practically started to cry because I of what happens to Nicola and the Queen. Nowing the end of Mary's life didn't help at all either. Read this book if you want to be touched deeply. Some might not like it, but I was searching for a good book at Mary, Queen of Scots, and this was just what I was looking for. This could be read by a reader as young as eight and up. I am not sure if younger readers would be able to understand some of the words or be able to read such a long book, but if you might read it to a young person, but explanation might be needed. I WILL NEVER BOOK THIS BOOK IN A BOX AND THROW IT INTO THE BASEMENT, GARAGE, OR SHED. A MAGNIGICENT READ!!!!!!!!!!!1
Rating: Summary: FABULOUS story of a female fool! Review: I portray a female court jester with a reenactment troupe in Williamsburg (VA) and bought this book in order to gain some insight to my character. I can't begin to tell you what a fabulous book it is! This is not a "baby" book, written only for tiny children - rather it's written in a way that anybody will enjoy reading it. Children will love the book, but it's written for kids on much higher reading levels - I'd recommend it to those in middle and high school, or younger kids who read on advanced levels. It's nearly 400 pages, but I had such a hard time putting it down that I've breezed through it in two days. Nicola "La Jardiniere" is presented to us as a very real human being. She shows us that even court jesters were people, and they had the same emotions as the rest of the court. This poor child has been through the ringer in her young lifetime! She goes from being abused by her uncle, while performing in his troupe, to suddenly being thrust into the role of the court fool for Mary, Queen of Scots. It's frightening for her, to say the least. But, with her wit and charm, she manages to make the Queen's life a little more bearable. I was especially touched in the scene where (something happens - that I won't disclose) and the poor jester throws herself into the Queen's arms and bursts into tears. The Queen merely comforted poor Nicola, and you could FEEL the tender affection between these two ladies. Anyone who's read up on Mary, Queen of Scots KNOWS what her eventual fate was, but you need to read the book to find out how Nicola dealt with such a tragic loss. She's a very brave girl, indeed! Since reading the book, I have a whole new insight into how to portray MY character at the next feast!
Rating: Summary: Good Book! Review: I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was gripping throughout the entire story and it wa s hard to put down. I enjoyed the fact that it took romance, adventure, history, and mystery and braided them into a beautiful story. I thought Nicola, La Jardiniere, was a great character and truly had everyone's heart. Her loyalty towards the queen and the queen herself add to the story. I love this book! It is definetly on my top ten list!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant! Review: I really enjoyed this excellent read! The heroine was likable, as were most of the other characters. My favorite chaper was the Marriage Race, where all the suitors line up to woo Mary. My whole family enjoyed it greatly -- including my Mom, Dad, and little sister.
