Rating: Summary: an excellent, mysterious book Review: The book The House Of Dies Drear was an extrodinary book that brings back the many wonders of slavery and freedom. It is a historical story that involves the underground railroad and a house full of mysteries. A colored family called the Smalls moves into an old house that once belonged to Dies Drear, a freer of slaves untill he was murdered. It also was a stop for slaves on the underground railroad. When wierd things start happening the family becomes curious, and adventurous. Trying to befriend the community they become aware of the myths their house holds. Some of the most interesting parts take place in the underground tunnels beneath the Smalls house. Pluto was my favorite character because you don't know what his real identity is untill close to the end. Pluto tricks the Smalls many times throughout the story and gives it many twists. He lives in a cave with a secret room full of priceless treasures from slaves many centuries ago. At the end the Smalls get a great responsibility and much respect from the rest of the community. This was a very interesting book that I really enjoyed reading. It was hard to stop reading this book. I reccomend The House of Dies Drear to people from the ages 8-16, it may be too hard for children younger than that to understand.
Rating: Summary: Very good, mysterious Review: I have recently read "The house of Dies Drear" by Virginia Hamilton, and I thought it was a very good book. It is about a 13 year old boy named Thomas Small and his family moving from North Carolina to Ohio. Thomas' father is a collage teacher and specializes on the Under-ground Railroad. They move into a house that was once a part of the Under-ground Railroad, and it's supposed to be haunted. In this adventure, Thomas meets up with some prety weird charicters. So if you have the intelligence of a grub worm, you'll go out and buy this book, RIGHT NOW!! So I give it a over-all score of 5 stars. So read "The House Of Dies Drear" today, and I know You'll Thank me later
Rating: Summary: genius! Review: Full of excitement and mystery. Written with careful thought and ideas. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Sugarev Janice---It was a thrilling mystery from the past. Review: I totally liked the book and I think that Virgina Hamilton is a great author. Zeeley, another one of her books is one that I couldn't put down. The House of Dies Drear is about a boy who moves to Ohio. The house he is moving into was part of the underground railroad. While exploring all the secrets of the house he will take you on adventures The characters, (besides his family) are odd as well, in addition to the house. They will mislead to too, and are very mysterious. It was such a good book. Everyone in thier right mind should march off and go get the book this instant!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: It is a great book Review: It was a good book. I read it over and over again, and I never lose interest. It is one of the best books I have ever read
Rating: Summary: MR. FELT assignement: The House of Dies Drear Review: The House of Dies Drear is a monstrous, olden house with secret tunnels that happens to be haunted, and it just happens that the Smalls' move into the house to fix it up, and restore it's historical charm. As soon as the Smalls moves in, the main character, a thirteen year old boy named Thomas notices something unnatural about the house and discovers it is haunted by the ghost of Dies Drear and his two slaves that were murdered.
As the story goes on and on, little things happen, and Thomas tries to figure out what exactly is happening to the place and why the ghosts are haunting it, but without giving away the ending, that's all I can tell you for now, but Thomas and his Father discover something extremely odd about this house, besides for its haunting by ghosts that is.
The book was overall a kind of a boring read to me, and I don't plan on reading it again. I give the book: The House of Dies Drear a small but worthy 6 out of 10 or a reduced 3 out of 5 if you want to put it that way. The bad rating refers to its rather not enticing type of writing and a kind of country `hick' as the lead character. Overall this book is not a fun book to read if you are bored, and only sufficed to keep me busy during my silent reading period, I do not recommend this book to readers looking for excitement. But if you choose so, do as you wish...
Rating: Summary: Book Review Review: Thsi book started out (first 80 pages or so) being VERY creepy and scary--not for younger readers. But then it changes and becomes a mystery. It is not until page 100 or so that we discover the main characters are Black, and this really impacts the story about ex-slaves and the Underground Railroad. It is supposed to be a book that tells us about slavery and the Underground Railroad, and is used in classrooms as a reading book with social studies tie-ins -- but NO -- I do not think it does this well at all. It is unclear what is happening or who is doing what until nearly the end, and the history is all mixed up with the fiction. This book will scare kids under 10, and some older ones too. I am more confused about the role of the Underground Railroad and Dies Drear now than before I read the book.
Rating: Summary: A bit dull... Review: After reading the synopsis, I was quite eager to read this book, but I am sad to say it was a bit disappointing. To begin, the plot unfolds very slowly (all the events in the book take place within a couple of days) and lacks any interesting twists or turns. A few parts can seem somewhat engaging, but you quickly lose interest because of the laggard pace. Overall, it was a bit dull, but did provide some interesting details about life around the time of the Civil War.
Rating: Summary: I Hate this book Review: This book is so boring. I was forced to read this book beacause of a class project in my school. I told the teacher i hated it and she got mad. The book was too long. The ending was one of the dumbest ending i ever read. DONT READ THIS BOOK.
