Summary: Mystery? Or.......Not Completely?!
Review: This book started out kind of slow. The first couple of paragraphs were just about Thomas and his family while they are on their way to the House of Dies Drear. Later, when they got to the "Haunted House", it starts to get more exciting. It was getting REALLY exciting. At the end of the book, it was a REALLY disappointing end. They mentioned a certain trunk and make it seem all mysterious and then they don't say anything else about it and we didn't have any idea that there was a sequal. So, I think that it could have had a bit more "undisappointing" end. I read this book with my sixth grade class and other than what I've mentioned, it was great!

Summary: Good begining bad ending
Review: I think this book has a funny and weird start, and it starts to get more and more exciting, I really got excited. The middle part of the book was really good. The story's ending was kind of bad and it really made me disapointed.

Summary: The Hilly Ride
Review: The House of Dies Drear is an exellent book! A thriller, Thomas Small is a clever 13-year-old black boy who moves from plain farm lands to the wonderous sopposedly haunted house of the lengerdary Underground Railrod wonder Dies Drear. Thomas is a trouble seeker, and boy does he find it! The 1st few chatpers are a big boring, but after that, it's all uphill! Sevret passagways, a haunted groundskeeper Mr. Pluto, and confusion mixed in with it! It is very interesting and it makes you think! There is a lot of background on the Underground Railroad! I can't WAIT to read the sequal, but hopefully the ending of it will be better. Yes, the ending of this book is very... dissapointing! Basicially, everything works out the way that you would think it would, but then it's all downhill from there! But, it is still an exellent book that I would deffinetly reccomned to anyone that likes to read! I loved it, but it could have had a better ending. It's like a mystery... it starts down low, goes up way high, then kind of drags. But still, a thriller! I LOVED IT!

Review: This book drags out in the begining and then in the middle its pretty good and makes you think whats gonna happen next. Then you think towrds the end that its gonna be so good and then its like there sitting there and it ends. It dissapoints me a lot. Other than that it's a really good book.

Summary: Good for Discussion
Review: This was a very good mystery for all the mystery lovers out there. Not being the hugest fan of mystery myself, I was a little bit too scared at parts, and the whole story never really came together for me. However, in my book discussion group, made up of 5 or 6 sixth-graders and their mothers, many people loved it. This is a great book for discussion, because there are so many minute details that not everyone picks up. I enjoyed this book a lot, and I would recomend it to anyone who is looking for a suspensful mystery.

Summary: Nice mystery...
Review: This is a great book for all you mystery lovers out there. Virginia Hamilton has very good descriptive techniques and you can picture everything in the book very well. The one thing I did not like was sometimes it got very confusing and you had to sit and think about it before you could understand it. Other than that, it was a very nice book.

Summary: The House of Dies Drear
Review: This book was terrific. One of my fifth grade classmates recommended the book to me, and I couldn't put it down. Thomas was really brve, especially when he pused the button by the front door. I would definatly recommend this novel.
