Rating: Summary: a filling book Review: When Wise Child's mother leaves her, when her father is out at sea, she has no one to take care of her, until a nice witch named Juniper offers to take her. Wise Child is terrified because the children of the town say nasty things about Juniper, but she soon learns to love her, though she has to work hard and sometimes she wishes she could have something better. Then when her real mother comes, who works with black magic, and offers Wise Child things so much better than what she has, that it is too tempting to refuse. When she finds ..........I'm so sorry I can't go on it would wreck the whole book.I started WISE CHILD just because I was desperately in need of something to read, but I was immediately entransed by Monica Furlong's world.I really liked this book. No. I LOVED this book. The end couldn't have been better!! This book is very filling it is one of the few books that end at the right moment.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully Written! Review: Wise Child, and is a unique and magical story by Monica Furlong. I can't begin to explain the way it affected me through its glorious array of descriptions and distinctive characters and colorful plot. Wise Child is about a very young girl who's mother, Maeve the Fair, abandoned her to persue other endeavors and who's sea faring father, Finbar, is away. She is therefore left in the care of the 'medicine' woman Juniper. Through the care of Juniper, Wise Child learns the holistic uses of plants and herbs and becomes one with nature and magic. Unfortunetly, Maeve the Fair returns, and Wise Child is forced to make the desicion between living an affluent life with her evil sorceress mother or stay with her new found friend Juniper. When she makes the wrong desicion, she finds herself in terrible trouble. I would definitely suggest this story to anybody, as I have found it wonderfully magical and imaginitive!
Rating: Summary: Furlong definately did her research Review: This story is excellent. Not only is the story entertaining just by itself, but the accuracy of the rituals described as Wise Child learns from Juniper(a doran, the old British word for a wise woman or healer), from the Beltane Feast to the flying ointment, shows that the author knows her stuff about the lifestyle now known as Wicca. One can get the plot of the story from the other praising reviews, but the language and incredible detail that Ms. Furlong uses makes this book all the richer. An excellent book; definately worth the price.
Rating: Summary: All time favorite!!! Review: A friend gave me this book about ten years ago for my eleventh birthday. Since then I've probably read it at least thirty times. Ms. Furlong animates the characters in such a way that they glimmer right off the page. You don't read this book. You see it play out in your mind as if you were truly there. The author has an amazing gift for crating empathy with her readers as well. You actually feel the pain that the villagers' uneducated bigotry causes Juniper and her young apprentice, Wise Child, and feel a great surge of joy as they rise above it.
Rating: Summary: Deceptively Simple Review: Wise Child is one of those books that manages to cross age brackets to provide meaning to anyone with an open mind. THe portrayal of Wise Child and Juniper's lifestyle is not only beautiful but also not far from truth. The philosophy on living that Juniper teaches Wise Child is pacifistic and appreciative of every aspect of living and the influence of this book is very positive and life affirming.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: Usually, I am not a big fan of magic and fantasy books, save "Wrinkle in Time" or the Harry Potter books. But for some reason, when I started reading this book, I could not put it down. I had never heard of it before. I think Monica Furlong possesses a great talent for writing, and I am now hoping to track down a copy of "Juniper" to read. I really, really recommend it!
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favourites Review: _Wise Child_ is one of the best books I've ever read! It's a story about a young girl living with her grandmother, when the grandmother dies she is taken in by Juniper, who everyone believes to be a witch. Juniper, who is actually a _Doran_, teaches Wise Child how to help heal people and to live in the rhythm, having to face both Wise Child's mother, a powerful sorceress, and the hatred of the village priest. _Wise Child_ has remained a much-read favourite of mine, ever since I first read it at age 12 (I am now 14). I recomend it to anyone who can read ^_^
Rating: Summary: very good but... Review: i found this book, like many others did, to be very well written and just good overall. however, the themes of witch craft that it is claimed to have are very very vague. i found that it was not truly about this at all, more so accepting the differences in others and so on. i believe this quote was from wise child, but it could have been from juniper. it is, forgive me if i am a little off,: "Christians believe there is only love, but we see something more" if there wasn't love where would we be? love is the one thing that is worth working towards, because in the end it is only love that makes us happy and can solve problems.
Rating: Summary: An Exciting Book! Review: (The summary says it is for 4-8 year olds, but that must be a mistake). I'm 11 years old. I really liked this book. I recommend it for everyone. It was good from the start and it was good all the way through. It is full of magic and unexpected things. I read it in only two days!
Rating: Summary: Two wonderful Furlong stories Review: "Wise Child" and "Juniper" are about witch-healers, called Dorans. Each one tells the tale of the lead girl's begginnings into witchcraft, with the help of their Doran-mother. Most of their work is mixing herbs and making medicine, but sometimes they have to use trance to look into the future or into themselves. The mood has a slight taste of curry to it...spices that are somewhat sweet, somewhat bitter. The cover art is beautiful.
