Rating: Summary: An old favorite Review: Honest to whatever God you believe in, this book changed my life. Reading it in 6th grade put things in perspective, and helped me to grow, just as does the main character.About a girl growing up under the tutalage of the mysterious herbalist\witch, Juniper, Wise Child is a spellbinding, lucidly written, and relatable novel. Some elements are quite fantastical, others disturbing, but most are painfully realistic, particuarly the trial. I should mention that those who are offended by paganism and witchcraft ought not to read this book, for it deals with such. It also might help, especially in the end, to know a bit of Celtic mythology.
Rating: Summary: Deserves to be a childrens classic. Review: I felt I had to add this review to the other previous ones as so far the reviewers have been adults who have also loved this novel. There should be no doubt, however, what a wonderful children's book this is. I came across this when I was forced to read it in 1991 at the age of 10, as it was the only one left in the school library box. Needless to say, the school never saw the book again and this has become undoubtedly my favourite book of all time which, considering how much i've read, says a great deal about the story. Welding fantasy and history together, the story is simply magical, readable, and unforgettable. I was always greatly disappointed that there was no follow up to the second book, Juniper. It stimulated my interest in the surrounding history (which went on to become my passion) as well as the narrative itself. Wise Child is fascinating and unusual. I could not recommend this book highly enough for young readers
Rating: Summary: Strong and Interesting Heroines Review: I LOVED IT ! I've been interested in herbal lore for quite some time now, and I Found this book and loved it. It's a good and quick read, and WILL get you interested in herbal lore.
Rating: Summary: wonderful... Review: This book is wonderful. I can't say much more than everyone else has, because we all recognize how pure and how well written the book is. But I have to say that my favorite part about this book is the clear mental image the words let you create in your mind. Every time I read it I travel back to the identical place I was in when I last read it. The book is so skillfully written that it can take you back to this place over and over, and still seem fresh. That place it creates for you is always waiting. It's a great book.
Rating: Summary: I LOVED this book! Review: This was the best book I have ever read in my entire life... even better than Harry Potter and the Tamora Pierce series (which used to be my favorites and are now my second favorites). This book was about a girl named Juniper-commonly known as Ninnoc. She is the only daughter of King Mark of Cornwall. She is very spoilt there being a princess. Then one day Juniper's godmother Euny decides to take Juniper for a year and a day to train her in magic so that Ninnoc/Juniper can aid her kingdom when it was in danger. But, this is not as hard as it seems... Euny is very poor and Ninnoc/Juniper is used to palace life... plus she is leaving all of her friends behind. After this she must come over other obsticles... like an evil sorceress and sorcerer working together to steal her fathers kingdom. This book was very suspernsfull. It was cool how all of the peices fit together in the end... from the beginning of the book. My favorite charachter was Juniper because she was so caring, understanding, kind, and witty. I also liked the way that Juniper handled many things in the book. There are many things in this book that happened that I would have done differently.... most of them hurtfully. I wish I could be more like Juniper. I HIGHLY reccomend this book to anyone. It is a mix of mystery, friendship, fantasy, and suspence. Even if you don't like those four things much chec=k out the book or buy it because it is REALLY good! (I reccomend that third gr and up read this book- not much sooner) From, A fellow reader
Rating: Summary: An excellent portrayal of what a real witch is like! Review: I was very impressed with the way Juniper was presented. As a real witch, I am appalled by the stereotypes that are so common in books. A true witch is someone who cares about the world and the people around them. This is exactly how Juniper is in this book. Even when her life is at risk, she puts herself on the line to care for those whom she can help. I will keep a copy of this book to loan to my witch-ignorant friends. It will help them to understand that we are not about black cats, pointy hats, and witches brews! That we are honest, caring people who do our best to help others in need with the skills we have.
Rating: Summary: enthralling Review: I absolutely adored this book. I read it first maybe 4 or 5 years ago, and I've reread it countless times since then, along with its prequel (Juniper). It belongs in a library that includes Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley... it's a nice blend of fantasy and historical fiction, and any child, young adult or adult who's into magical tales would do well to read both it and Juniper. I read Wise Child first, although it is the sequel to Juniper, but both are equally good and worth reading, whatever the order.
Rating: Summary: Creative Review: I really enjoyed reading the story "Wise Child." It was very creative and made you really feel how the main character was feeling. I also liked all of the description and the plot. It had a GREAT theme and AWSOME details. Anyone of ALL ages would enjoy it and I know you would too!
Rating: Summary: a good novel Review: This engrossing novel was fun and interesting to read. Wise Child is someone that most people can relate to, or at least feel sorry for. Although unlikable at times, she is an interesting character. Juniper is a wonderful motherly figure towards Wise Child and Furlong makes you wish that you had your own Juniper. This book keeps the reader thinking long after it is finished. The ending is the one thing about this book that I wish were different, although you can be satisfied with it once you think about it. This book should be read by all.
Rating: Summary: Wise Child Review: Wise Child was a great book! It had lots of twists and turns and it had an indepth story plot. My favorite thing about the book is how much Wise Child changes and matures in the short time she is living with Juniper. Then how quickly she becomes lazy again when living with Maeve. It just goes to show you how much others influence your life. I would recomend this book to people who enjoied the Chronicles of Narnia and Little house on the Prarie books because it is a mix of both. It is a great mix of magic and prarie home life.
