Rating: Summary: Good stories Review: I read this book in one night. The stories were great. They were so different from what I normally read. After reading these stories I wanted to live in L.A. I reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys the different.
Rating: Summary: loved it. Review: I love how Francesca Lia Block's young adult books can appeal to people of all ages. She goes into places that I've always hoped other writers would go into, and I love her work.
Rating: Summary: Magical yet real Review: The 9 stories of Girl Goddess #9 are so beautiful and magic in their own ways. All are different from the more conventional stories that are popular today, but I think that that is what makes them so wonderful. They deal with issues that do happen today. Issues that teens have to face every waking day, whether they want to or not. Sure there are things in the stories that people don't believe in, such as fairies, elves, and blue creatures that hide in closets, but that the mystery of Block's books. My personal favorites are Dragons in Manhattan and Rave. Read them and you'll be hooked on Francesca Lia Block and start saying things like hipster, slinkster cool and so on, without even knowing that you are doing it. The stories pull you in until you are lost in a new world, and that's the best part.
Rating: Summary: As real as life Review: When I bought this book i didnt have high hopes for it and was gonna use it as filler until i could find a really good book. well i was way wrong. this book became my favorite instantly. it takes a look on nine girls lives ina way that i have never seen. Francesca Lia Block adds twists and touches intouchable subjects. all in all this book is magic and wonderful and it will touch you and make you believe. it will also give you a relatioship with each of the characters that will make you feel as if u know them and youll of course love each of them.
Rating: Summary: One of the oddest things I've read Review: From what I've heard and what I read on the inside cover, I expected Ms. Block to be one of those eccentric writers; fairies, glitter, girls named Peachy Pie and whatnot. I wasn't far off.I learned early on that she was not a 'conventional' writer; that is to say, she didn't appear to adhere to the normal guidelines of plots and dialogue. Her style of writing is very different - refreshing and engaging in some ways - usually very fanciful, with a grounded edge. The moral of the story is not always clear on the first read (sometimes not on the second, either), and Ms. Block definitely leaves judgment to the reader's discretion. In "Dragons in Manhattan", young Tuck Budd goes in search of her father, because all she's ever known is two mothers. The answer was a surprise to both her and myself, and I'd have to say it's the most realistic and probably the best story of the book. The other gems in the rough were "Rave", in which a man reminisces on lost love; "Winnie and Cubby" (another winner!), in which a boy tries to find identity while his girlfriend seemingly loses some of her own, and... that was about it. "Blue" made very little sense, and I was unable to figure if there was more metaphorical meaning or if there was indeed a little character named Blue. Of the other stories, I have to say that they are often of mature themes, dealing with non-to-semi-graphic descriptions of sex and drugs. I would not recommend this to a younger teenager by any means. But once you're used to Francesca's fanciful style of writing the tragically hip, it's kind of fun to take a walk down her trippy candycane lane.
Rating: Summary: One of my Favorites! Review: I love FLBs writing, and this book is no exception. I read it at a time when I really needed encouragment, and this book puts out! I absolutly love it and will treasure it forever. I espcially loved "Winnie and Cubbie" and "Rave". I love FLBs writing, and would suggest it to any(and every)one. In fact, I'm on my way to but a copy of "Violet and Claire" right now!
Rating: Summary: A True Goddess Review: Francesca Lia Block is one of the most fascinating writers I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Having read most of her books, I would say that "Girl Goddess #9" is probably the most entertaining. All of the stories leave an indelible mark on your heart. The feeling that you can get off just one of the stories is maybe better than the feeling you get from reading a full novel. She uses very wonderful imagery and poetic inspiration. The stories are magical but real. My personal favorites are 'Rave', 'Pixie and Pony', and 'Winnie and Cubby'. After reading them as many times as I have, you know them by heart and you love them forever.
Rating: Summary: Another hit for Francesca Lia Block Review: 9 more stories so quench the thirst for Francesca's great literary creations. Admittedly, Girl Goddess #9: Nine Stories doesn't hold a candle to Dangerous Angels, but it's still beautiful enough to be worth the read. Each of the nine stories is short, sweet, and greatly different from the rest. Each has plenty of emotions and feelings that the reader can relate to, not to mention Block's great cast of exotic characters. Whether you're looking for the book to curl up on the beach with, or read in the comfort of your own home, it's definately worth it. :)
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING Review: Block's style is unlike any other. Beautifully lyrical, this sets an extreme setting which puts you right there and shines the goddess right through you. This book will touch you where you have never been touched, will let you feel completely new. Hope, determination, and satisfaction are all brought once the book is read. FLB's Books are what keep me surviving, they have stopped me from commiting suicide even. This is a book I absolutely recomend, it brings out a new person in you.
Rating: Summary: Amazing writing talent.. Review: Amazing writing talent is displayed in this book. The writer has imagination and understanding of what teenagers go through. I related to this book quite well and it inspired me to write. I do not think that this book is approiate for girls under the age of 14 though. It deals with some pretty heavey issues that were hard for even me to understand at times. I really liked how she displayed her charcters. There all so bright and believable. I would love to see another collection of her short stories published.
