Rating: Summary: Deathwatch Review Review: The book starts out with a review of the current situation. Madec and Ben are in the desert hunting for bighorn sheep. Ben is like a desert guide to Madec. Madec was luckily drawn from a list of many hunters. He has a week to shoot one bighorn sheep to add to his collection of animal trophies. Madec accidently shoots an old prospector in some bushes and tries to cover his mistake up. When Ben makes the upsetting discovery he insists on taking the man to the police. Madec, thinking he will be sent to jail, opposes Ben's decision. He tricks Ben into giving him his gun. Once he has Ben's gun he makes him take off all of his clothes. He makes him walk through the desert with no food, water, or clothes, his protection from the sun. He hunts Ben out and tries to make sure Ben doesn't reach town. Who will win this battle of survival? Ben always thought he could survive in the desert under this situation. Was he right? Deathwatch is a book inflicting the theme of survival into its readers. Opinions may vary about this book because of its strong plot sequence. Throughout the majority of this book the author concentrates solely on the story taking place. The most significant theme of the entire book is survival. What caused this book to seem boring and irritable is its lack of main characters. Until the very end there are only two main characters. Then suddenly towards the end a lot of new characters are introduced for a short time. The prime moment of the book is the ending. The end of the story has an interesting and amusing twist. The downfall of the book is the long delay in the middle. About midway through the book the author goes off into a long scientific description of a butte. That lost most of the readers' attention. This book could've been greatly improved if the author would've dropped the scientific descriptions and added more exhilaration to the chase.
Rating: Summary: fascinating Review: This novel is about college student named Ben, willing to guide Madec on a big hunt for big horn sheep in the desert, for extra money for school. Medec a rich hunter from California, accidently shot an old prospector that he had mistaken for a sheep. Ben, being the honest person he is, wants to report what happened to the police. Madec refuses to report it to the police. Instead of madec doing the right thing, he tries to persuade Ben to leave the body and not to tell anyone, offering him more money. Ben rejects his offer and tells Madec that he is going to tell notify the authorities. Madec forces Ben to take off his clothes and walk home without any water or food. On Ben's journey, Madec follows Ben everywhere to make sure that he doesn't get home alive. Deathwatch is a very well written novel and I would recommend you to read it. The author has a way of making you want to read the next page; he brings the characters to life and makes you a part of the story. Deathwatch is a must for people who like action in their story. The part that I liked was when Ben was honest and when he tries to make things right. I would want to read more books by Robb White.
Rating: Summary: can't kill me - i will survive Review: Deathwatch - just like the title describes is about a man who struggles to survive the devastating heat of the desert with no water or shelter with the 'deathwatch' ticking away his life. The book is about Ben, a young fellow who spends one week in the desert to assist a bighorn hunter to earn money to pay for his college. What was supposed to be an easy earning for Ben turns out to be a life or death situation. The nightmare begins when, Madec, the hunter who is authorized by the county to hunt bighorns for one week in the desert, shoots his rifle killing an old man. Madec being insane and scared suggests keeping it a secret. Ben making his judgment that they cannot continue hunting with a dead man argues. Ben ends up being left to die, stripped naked with no supply for him to survive in the hot dry desert. The book was a page-turner with all the element of a thrilling adventurous book. I really liked the book because it was very descriptive of the things that happened for example the power of what a .358 magnum gun can do to you. I think the only negative part to the book was that Robb White stretched a bit too much in the middle of the book with constant description of Ben's painful throat from thirst. I think other than that it was a amazing book with constant surprises and thrilling action. I recommend this book to anyone from a not-so-into-books to an I-am-a-book-worm people.
Rating: Summary: DEATHWATCH By Robb White Review: The book Deathwatch by Robb White, was an exciting novel set in the late 60's. Death Watch has two main characters: Ben and Madec who are hunting in the desert area around L. A. Madec is a powerful businessman who wants a bighorn sheep for a trophy before they became illegal, and Ben is his desert guide. While hunting Madec ends up shooting an old desert prospector. Ben, being the honest person he is, wants to report what has happened, but Madec won't let him. Instead of letting Ben do the right thing, Madec tries to bribe Ben. Ben wisely turns down the bribe and tells Madec that he is going to notify the authorities. Holding Ben at gunpoint, Madec tells him to take off his clothes and get out of his sight. Ben desperately roams the desert hunted by a psychotic man with a powerful gun. Will Ben survive the extreme battle against nature? Will Madec hunt down and kill Ben? Will Madec ever be convicted for murder? To find out the answers to these questions you will just have to read the book. I enjoyed this book greatly. Deathwatch is very well written and I would love to read more books by Robb White. The author does a great job of leaving you in suspense and making you want to read the next page. There are only a few things I disliked about this story. First off, I personally didn't like the mood of the book all that much. To me it showed a lot of hate and conflict. Another subject I did not enjoy was the long descriptions of the environment in the book. I want to read a story not a description of a place but, that is just me. For the most part, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to those who like suspense.
Rating: Summary: Deathwatch- A Struggle Review: This amazing book involves the struggle for life and death. Madec hires Ben as a guide in the desert to hunt bighorn sheep. Madec shoots something that wasn't supposed to be shot, and Ben wants to report the accident to the authorities. Madec knows that he might go to jail, and he doesn't want that to happen. Madec makes a deal with Ben that will determine the depth of Ben's strength and Madec's true intelligence. I thought the author did a very good job of using imagery. I found it very easy to get a mental picture of where Ben was. I didn't like the author's lack of similes. I thought that there were a few instances when a comparison would have cleared any suspicion up. I thought the characterization was very appropriate for the plot. My favorite part of the whole book though, was the ending. I'm not going to tell you that though, you'll have to read it for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best book I've ever Read! Review: Honestly, I'm no true book reader, but in school you have to read some books. I have read a fair amount of books though, so I know a good book when I read one. So I picked this book up from the library for an ISU because it sounded interesting, and because it was just over 200 pages, which was the minimum for the ISU. The book is 220 pages long and I picked it because I don't really enjoy long books. Especially when they're rather boring. I'd rather this book be longer because it was so good! Right from the start this book grabbed my attention. If you have the time, you'd probably want to read this book in one reading session. But it's pretty good to stop for awhile and think about things that have happened. Anyway, here's the story: A 22 year old man named Ben is given an opportuny to get the money he needs for another semester at college. He needs to help a man named Madec hunt bighorn sheep in a desert located in California. He wants him to drive him around. Bens accepts because he wants the money for college. Madec spots a bighorn and shoots it with a .22 Hornet. Ben gets in the Jeep and drives to where the sheep was shot to pick it up when he discovers it wasn't a sheep; it was an old man. A dead old man. Ben tells Madec and Ben wants to report the accident. This is when Ben realizes what a cold man Madec is. Madec doesn't like this idea and doesn't want to get caught up in a situation like this with the police. He explains to Ben how a situation like this can lead to consequences that don't have to happen. Ben doesn't agree with Madec and Madec offers him more money to just forget about it and leave the body there, but Ben rejects. Ben just won't comply with Madec so Madec tells him to give him his clothes, and he'll have to find his own way out of the desert. Madec also says he'll harass him the whole way. A cold-blooded man with a .358 Magnum and a .22 Hornet with a scope hunting a man with no clothes, no food, or no water isn't such a good thing for Ben. Anyway, this is where the story really takes off. The last 30 pages or so were so interesting that I couldn't put the book down. It's just that good! If you like the story of this book, then you'll definitely enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Brandon's Deathwatch Review Review: Deathwatch is an extremely exciting, riveting book. The main character Ben, is hired by a man named Madec as a hunting guide. Madec is hunting for big horn sheep in the Southwest. Ben doesn't like Madec, and isn't looking forward to the trip. However Madec pays well and Ben needs the money for his next year of college. Something goes wrong during the hunt and Ben ends up in a fight for survival against Madec. It usually takes me about a week to finish a book this length, but I finished this book in one weekend. The author uses vivid detail and makes you feel like you're right there in the book. He also creates a lot of suspense. You can't wait to find out what happens next. I highly suggest this book. It was very enjoyable and exciting. This is one of the best books I've ever read. It would be a good book for teachers to make required reading. It has challenging vocabulary and a good plot. Deathwatch is a great book.
Rating: Summary: Deathwatch Review Review: I started reading this book one day for the heck of it and as soon as i started reading I got hooked. This is an awesome book one of the best I have ever read. The story is about a boy named Ben and a man named Madec Ben is a hunting guide for Madec who gets a chance to hunt for a big horn sheep. Madec accidentlly shoots and old man and when Ben refuses the bribe Madec offers him to stay silent Madec starts going on a hunt for Ben who is alone with no water in the scorching desert with a man hunting him with a gun.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and Adventurous Review: I read this book for an assignment. I would recommend this book to someone that likes hunting and outdoors books. I recommend it to this type of person because this book takes place in the desert on a longhorn sheep hunt, when suddenly the hunter starts hunting people after accidentally shooting a prospector hunting for gold. The reason that he is hunting people, or should I say a person, is because the person is the hunter's guide that witnessed the shooting. I like the way Robb White shows adventure in this book. That is the reason that I recommend this book to hunters and outdoors people; to learn how not to act in the field.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: I read this in public school and loved it...then i forgot about it and late one night 15 years later was watching a late night movie staring Andy Griffith...(I forget the movies name but it was based on this book) and i couldnt believe i was watching a movie of one of the best stories i had ever read! Madec is a big game hunter who hires Ben, a young Student to guide him for Big Horn sheep...
