Summary: Which Witch
Review: The books was good, but could be very boring at times. It was very predictable and had the fairy tale ending. It's about a wizard who holds a contest for the witch to perform the darkest magic trick. Belladonna falls in love with him even though she is a white witch. In the end of course she ends up marrying him and they live happily ever after.

Summary: A great book for Harry Potter Fans
Review: I am the mother of a nine year old who loves to read. She read this book in two days and literally walked around the house bumping into things as she read. Wondering about the book, I read it myself and I found it very funny, quirky and imaginative --not scary and not "dark". I would recommend it for 8 year olds and up. It was nice to have a break from Harry Potter...

Summary: A children's book for Halloween
Review: Arriman the Awful, the Wizard of the North, decides he must marry in order to have an heir. But he can't just marry anyone -as a wizard he must marry a witch. So he sets up a competition for local witches. He will marry the witch who produces the blackest magic (not the coolest move on his part). The contest brings out an odd assortment of witches including some truly awful hags. The only attractive witches are an evil witch, Madam Olympia, with her own agenda, and a pretty young witch, Belladonna, who can only seem to produce white magic. Arriman has reasons for second thoughts, but the competition goes forward.

The magic has some surprising results, and there are questions about the power of a familiar. Is Belladonna a black witch or a white witch? And how does one deal with a resident ghost who may bore you to death? Everything seems to work out right in the end, but you don't want to get on the wrong side of a witch as you might end up a toad in the neighborhood pond.

Summary: concerned that this book is for children
Review: I found the book to be full of encourgagement toward Black Magic and the boy in the book was friends with Satan. I do not recommend this book to children. Poison, blood, and encouragement to practice black magic is not funny. If I could I would not even give it one star.

Summary: Arriman the Awful seeks a wife.
Review: Arriman the Awful is looking for a wife to carry on the sorcery tradition. He decides the witch must come from his hometown of Todcaster. The population of witches has dwindled to 6 rather poor specimens, one of whom is Belladonna, a white witch of all things! Arry decides to hold a black magic contest, the winner of which is to be his bride.

This was a really enjoyable story. You find yourself rooting for the white witch from the beginning, but I couldn't wait until each witch did her particular trick, they were alot of fun. Great fun for parents and their children.

Summary: Which Witch
Review: For my book report I chose to read a book called Which Witch? This book is about a wizard named Arriman the Awful. Ever since Arriman was a little boy he showed strange signs of being somewhat abnormal. As he grows older, his parents realize that there is definitely soothing wrong with a baby who sets houses on fire and totures the neighbors with his cruel tricks with out so much as lifting a finger! His parents come to realize that Arriman is a wizard, and an evil one at that. As he grows into a young adult, he moves away to a castle where he is still known today as Arriman the Awful, the blackest wizard of all. After 400 years of sitting in his castle torturing guests, making rabbits turn into fire breathing lizards and generally being bad, the idea hits him that some day soon he will want to retire and he decides that that day is now. There is one problem, however, with retiring at this time. Arriman will undoubtedly be lonely for the rest of his life without anyone to talk to. What Arriman needs is a faithful partner who would love him no matter what. Arriman needs a wife. Arriman makes a contest between the local witches that whoever can do the blackest thing will be Arrimans wife.
The two main characters in this book are Arriman the Awful and a girl named Belladona, a white witch who entered the contest. Throughout the coarse of the story, the two main charters run into many problems and adventures involving their magic. For example, Belladona steels back her "familiar" (an animal that witches can't do their magic without) from the evil Madam Olympia, who is Belladona's closest competitor in the contest. My favorite character is Belladona, whom I admire for her for her courage, optimism and her ability to solve problems in creative ways.
I can relate to Arriman the Awful the most because of the difficult time he has choosing between the two witches he likes best. The reason I can relate to this problem is that I have two friends who strongly dislike each other and sometimes I have to choose between them who I want to be with at that time, without hurting the other friends feelings. Fortunately for me I don't have to make a permanent decision about which friend I want to be with, unlike Arriman, who has to choose a wife for life.
I really enjoyed reading this book because its plot and great detail painted a whole new world for me to imagine while reading. I liked the characters' personalities, and I found the story very exciting and amusing. My favorite part of this book is when Arriman gives Belladonna her score in the contest for her black magic. I love how the book describes the look of amusement on Belladonna's face when she hears of her mark. There is no part of this book that I did not thoroughly enjoy, and I only regret that it ended so soon.
I would strongly recommend this book to everyone I know, including adults. This book has humor, romance, mystery, and sadness all packed into one novel. I found this book to be extremely well written and entertaining.

Summary: Best Book EVER!
Review: I have read two of Eva Ibbotson's books and I have also read two [other] books and think that the books that Eva Ibbotson writes are even better than [other]. I just finished Which Witch and I read it in four days. I wasn't forced to read it I just wanted to know what would happen next in the book. Same thing with her other book. If you've ever wanted to read a fantastic book than you should read Which Witch. It's about a man named Arriman who is a wizard. He cannot do one trick, though. That trick is to raise someone from the dead. A little boy named Terence also has powers, but he doesn't know it. Arriman decides to hold a contest to see who would marry him. The witches of Todcaster all try with to think of the deepest most horrible magic. It is really close between Madame Olympia and Belladonna. Only one of them will win. You have to read the book to find the answers.

Summary: Top Notch for us Normal Folk
Review: This novel has a wonderful storyline and is full of zany and lovable main characters. There is the usual ammo for the religious fanatics set on squashing any creative book that has the slightest tinge of witchcraft. However, for us normal teachers, parents, and children's book fans this book is top notch. I was quite surprised at the copyright date of 1979. I was sure it had been written in response to the Harry Potter pandemonium that hit us much later. I did notice the printing date of 1999, which helped to clear some of the mystery for me. Belladona, the main female character, disappointed me slightly when she fell so head over heels in love with the main male character who at first seemed very egotistical and full of himself. She acts way too lovesick and crazed for the modern day heroines that today's ladies admire. Arriman, her love, does prove his worth in the end when he shows his tender side and is willing to forsake all for their love. The ending is happy and leaves the reader wondering as to the future of their favorite characters. I had guessed at Terence's true character traits but wasn't proven correct until Ibbotson finds the perfect outlet for his abilities. The witch contest is a wonderfully suspenseful part of the book and keeps you turning the pages as each witch tries to outdo the last one. Mother Bloodwort and Mr. Leadbetter were two more of my favorite characters that I wanted to see happy in the end. Overall, this is a first rate book for us normal folk that enjoy creative writing that keeps children reading and keeps the magical world of books alive in our hearts and minds.

Summary: Iva Ibbotson's book Which Witch
Review: I liked Eva Ibottson's book called Which Witch. It's about a dark magician who needs a wife in order to keep his title as the darkest magician in the world. All of these wacky witches show up for the contest with their familiars (their pets). Belladonna who is a white witch is made fun of because she can't do anything bad. But when her turn comes during the competition, something unexpected happens! To learn more about this GREAT book you can check it out!
