Rating: Summary: Un-Memorable Review: This book is just, simply, not good. It in NO WAY compares with Harry Potter, which is basically my fave book. (I'm one of those stupidly obessed fans). Good books, in my opinion, stick out, and this one doesn't have much action, doesn't have good characters, there's not a lot of magic, no good descriptions, and was confusing at times. The antagonist wasn't even evil, and in my opinion fantasy antagonists HAVE to be evil, and the "good" characters weren't that good. Don't read this book; read Redwall or Harry Potter. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Better than Harry Potter! Review: My teacher read this book to my class of first, second and third graders and we all voted that it was better than Harry Potter! I think that JK Rowling read this book before she wrote Harry Potter. It is so similar! I liked it especially because the hero was a small girl named Odge Gribble. A boy, Raymond Trottle, is just deadly! Almost like Dudley, maybe worse!
Rating: Summary: Eva Ibbotson's books are a big thumbs up! Review: If you love books you can't put down, you'll love THE SECRET OF PLATFORM THIRTEEN. This book is exciting, adventurous, and at some parts humorous. All the characters have their own personality. There are pictures, but the book is descriptive,so you don't really need the pictures to picture everything. You never know what's going to happen next. This book is wonderful. YOU HAVE TO READ IT!
Rating: Summary: Worth reading Review: No, really, it's not as good as the Potter books. It doesn't have their depth or complexity of plot. I would bet, though, that Rowling had this in the back of her mind when she was writing the Sorceror's Stone -- there are too many similarities to be coincidental. Platform 13 is worth reading in its own right, though, and its hero, Ben, is NOT a Potter clone. If you are one of those kids (or a parent of one) whose reading really started with Rowling's books, this would be a good way to branch out and assure yourself that there are other good books out there.
Rating: Summary: A reader from CA Review: This book is WONDERFUL! I found it just like Harry Potter in some ways. This book is not dull and I was very excited to see what would happen next. It was very surprising. It wasn't predictible; what I thought was going to happen didn't and it surprised me. Usually, books are VERY predictible and what you think is going to happen does actually happen. Not with this. I never knew what was going to happen next. I would turn the page with my mind racing about what would happen. Usually, my guess was wrong. I recommend this book to any kid 9-12, especially to Harry Potter lovers.
Rating: Summary: English Authors rock! Review: This book is mainly for people who love Harry Potter. Why wait for book four when you can read other books with the same genry. This book is for ages 9-12 but I'm 13 and at times don't know why it wasn't rated higher. It was a delight to read and i can't wait to read another one of her adventurous books. They were witty and used a variety of words and I just loved the characters. They seemed to come alive for me and when I read a book, that's what I enjoy most. It's a quick read but a good find!
Rating: Summary: An absolute delight, a "must read". Review: There is life afer Harry Potter. I didn't think I would find anything to delight me in the same way, but thankfully I was wrong. This is clever and funny and quite magical. As an adult who unashamedly loves fantasy and magic for all ages, Platform 13 turned out to be one of the best of all times. Give yourself, your children and your fantasy loving friends a real treat. Buy them this book! The characters are delightfully funny, the story has great charm, and I had the pleasure of laughing out loud and being enchanted all at the same time. Bless the English for being so very good at children's story telling.
Rating: Summary: If you like Harry Potter this will certainly apeal to you! Review: This book is absolutely the greatest. The plot is excellent and this book is just as good, if not better than any of the Harry Potters. Nonstop, pageturning reading, you may never want to put this book down.
Rating: Summary: Welcome To A Magical Fantasy World!!! Review: I am halfway into this book, and simply can not put it down! The lovely descriptions create amazing pictures in your mind. You almost feel as if you are there with the characters on thier journey through Britan. Anyone that has read the Harry Potter series is sure to enjoy this story. I can't wait to finish!
Rating: Summary: Extremely delightful! Review: This story is an absolute must for any fantasy lover! The idea that a "door" to another world exists is preposterous, yet, Ibbotson actually converts you into a believer by the end of the story. She has an explanation for everything, from why we don't notice the magical beings living among us to where some of the famous historical figures who simply disappeared may have gone. This book is a delightful romp through Britan to rescue a little lost prince!
