Summary: Sheer delight!
Review: Platform 13 only allows passage every nine years between a small paradisiacal island and the known world. When the infant prince of the Island is kidnapped and cannot be retrieved for nine long years, the entire kingdom mourns. Finally an unlikely band of rescuers sets out to bring back the rightful prince. Their hilarious quest is much more difficult than they had anticipated.

With a publication date of 1994, Ibbotson's fantasy novel predates the Harry Potter books. There are surprising similarities, and one wonders if Rowling derived some inspiration from Platform 13.

Summary: Perfect for Fantasy Lovers of All Ages
Review: I absolutely loved this book! I have read many, many, books, and this is definately one of my favorites. I would rank it among other highly acclaimed novels, including Redwall, Harry Potter, Rhoald Dahl books such as The Witches, and several other favorites. Though some aspects of this book seem similar to Harry Potter, there are enough differences to set them quite far apart, but they are each very good in their own way.

Summary: A Waste Of Anyone's Time. . . . .
Review: Eva Ibbotson has here written a rushed, monotonous, dull story. 'The Secret of Platform Thirteen' is what I call a "wanna-be Harry Potter book". A mask of magical, whim sical characters and setting shroud the truly boring and familar book. You've noticed I've given it two stars, how ever. After all, isn't the cover art just breathtaking?

Summary: WONDERFUL, ENCHANTING, DELIGHTFUL!!!!!!!
Review: This book was excellent! If you like Harry Potter than you will love this book because like in Harry Potter there is magic and things that you could only imagine and wish for. There is a special island with all the wonderful things you could imagine and there the queen has her wonderful baby prince. One day the prince is taken for a nice breath of air outside of the gump. It is there that the evil and terribly fat Mrs. Trottle kidnaps the prince. 9 years later when the time for the gump's opening comes, the queen and king choose a group of people to find the lost prince. Many mishaps happen and you meet the snobby Raymond Trottle. read the rest of the book to find out what happens!

Summary: The Secret of Platform Thirteen
Review: Not at all an influential, or miraculous in any way, The Secret of Platform Thirteen does hold a secret, a magical one at that. This book has the magic to capture readers minds, a book that, if read allowed, no reader will want to let go of.

Summary: A Magical Novel That Is A Must-Read!
Review: This book has plenty of good, solid fantasy. It mainly takes place on a magical island which you can access for nine days every nine years through a portal in an abandoned train station(the portal is called a gump, for future reference). The island is ruled by a King and Queen, who have a son a while into their reign. Unfortunately, the Prince's nannies decide to take him to the portal so they can glimpse the outside world they came from. They go out into the nearby city after a fish and chips smell comes that reminds them of their childhood. While outside, the child is kidnapped, which the nannies don't discover until just as the gump is closing. Nine years later, a rescue party is sent to bring back the Prince quickly, the members being a wizard, a giant(who is made invisible for security purposes), and a fey, a human who has a magical knack for growing plants. At the last minute, a hag is allowed to go as well. I've left out a lot, but the plot is so complex and interesting that you'll have to read the book yourself. Just for the record, though, this is definitely one of my Top Ten Favorite Books.

Summary: Funny, lively and imaginative
Review: Platform 13 of King's Cross Railway Station has a doorway that leads to a magical island harmoniously inhabited by a diverse assortment of beings, including humans, hags, feys, mermaids, and furry little creatures called mistmakers. The kingdom's prince was kidnapped as an infant during a visit to London. Nine years later, when the portal between worlds reopens, four rescuers -- Cornelius, an elderly wizard who used to be a university professor in our world; Odge, a young and remarkably unhaglike hag; Gurkintrude, a fey who is sort of a goddess of agricultural plenty; and Hans, a kindly one-eyed ogre from the Alps who yodels and tends goats -- are sent by the king and queen to bring him home. The story is full of eccentric characters, mostly likable, a few definitely not: sundry ghosts who help the rescuers; Melisande, a water nymph who wants it known that she has feet and is not a mermaid; the hilariously obnoxious Mrs. Trottle and her equally unpleasant son; some horrifically amusing and ghastly harpies who have permanent waves and carry handbags; and Ben, a delightful kitchen boy of unknown parentage. The whole thing is very humorous, lively and imaginative, and fans of Diana Wynne Jones and J.K. Rowling most likely will enjoy it immensely. Also well worth reading are Ms. Ibbotson's extremely funny ghost books, obtainable in British paperback editions.
