Summary: I HATE THIS STUPID BOOK!
Review: This (in my opinion), is the worst book I have ever read in my entire life! The plot is stupid, and I don't like the way it is written. I am very dissipionted in this book. Eva Ibbitson has written much better books than this. I do not reccomend this book to anyone. So, in short, DON'T READ THIS BOOK!

Summary: Captivated 1st-3rd graders
Review: We read this book as part of reading time to a mixed 1st through 3rd grade elementary class. It is a rare book that captivates boys and girls alike and this book did it. It captured the students interest so much that several of them begged their parents to buy the book so they wouldn't have to wait for the next school reading session to find out how it turned out. While the setting is in England like Harry Potter, the characters are very different. This is a wonderful adventure story.

Review: The Secret
Of
Platform 13

Has a rich person who pampers and pets you kidnapped you from your loving parents when you were young? And parents, have you ever had a baby-sitter who would LOSE your children?

That's what happened to a prince. But not just any prince; this was the prince of a magical kingdom under train platform 13 in London.

When the prince was just a tiny baby, his baby-sitters (Lilly, Violet and Rose) went through platform 13 to old London with the prince driven by the memory of fish and chips.

But there was a problem with the passage underneath platform 13. There was a time limit. If you were in the magical kingdom (or London) when the portal closed, you'd be stuck in that place for nine years. When the nurses went through the portal they only had 3 hours before it closed.

Then, Mrs. Trottle kidnapped the young prince. Mrs. Trottle was a rich, mean person who always gets her way. The nurses, realizing what had happened, fled London to tell the King and Queen of the magical kingdom what had happened. They had only two clues: Mrs. Trottle had kidnapped the prince and she had named him Raymond.

But, alas, by the time the nurses told the King and Queen what had happened, it was too late; the portal had closed and the magical kingdom had 9 years to wait before they could send a rescue party.

Finally, the portal opened and the prince's rescue party- an ogre, a hag, a wizard and a fey- had only 9 days to rescue the prince.
But when they found him, the prince had become a spoiled, fat, ugly and selfish person. How could they rescue him now?

If you like a bit of magic, suspense and adventure mixed together, this is the book you need. However, there are a few faults: at the beginning you can sort of drift away because it is a bit boring. But after a few pages- WOW! Then you have a book you can hardly put down.

Summary: Platform 13 was one of the best books I've ever read
Review: The book was fantastic! I now know I'm going to read lots more of this author's books. It was very entertaining and I almost couldn't put it down until I was done. I hope this author writes lots more books as funny and enjoyable as this one.

I strongly encouraged fourth to sixth graders to read this book. I hope they'll all enjoy it. I liked this one so much I'm going to read Which Witch next.

Summary: Not the caliber of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series
Review: After reading Rowling's first two novels, I was looking to diversify. I found E. Ibbotson's series and decided to take a chance based on the cover endorsements.
I read the book out loud with my family. We were patient and persistent and read the entire book. We were all disappointed. The story has more potential than is developed. The plot is very transparent from early on in the story. There is no clear, central character or personal conflict/resolution. There ARE lots of fantasy characters but the author often looses the thread of the story in frequent explanations of fantastic beings. She does manage a few exciting scenes but over all it was not a compelling or engaging story.

Summary: I LOVE THIS BOOK !!!
Review: this book was great. I read alot so i am in a high school reading level but every once and a while i pick up a book thats easy and lite to read and love them. Children books tend to talk about worlds and magical places but in older books they tend to get more into reality. I have read such works as 1984 and Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies wich are strange and diffrent from childrens books. I thought the book was real good and i was happy who the prince ended up to be. I like the charecters Odge, and the others and my favorite charecter was Ben I don't know why he just was. I read this book pretty fast like I also do for a reading level like this but it is a wonderful book and that people who read to much about reality and not make believe this is a book that you will love and enjoy. I think this book is rather kidiesh but still 4/5 is a very good rating and in my book it is a winner

Summary: A great kids' book for adults
Review: The Secret of Platform 13 is at least as much fun - maybe more fun - for adults as for kids. The book is peopled - really - by magical characters who live on the Island as well as "up here". Why "peopled"? Because despite assorted unusual (to us) physical characteristics - tremendous size, horrendous smell, blue teeth, extra toes, single eyes - the characters have human emotions, insecurities, goals, and relationships. Maybe that's why Platform 13 was so much fun to read - after all, aren't books often better when we can identify with or recognize the characters? Though this is a children's book, adults may be more familiar with English terms such as "nappies" or "bangers," and may better appreciate the horridly spoiled boy's mother's "maneater" perfume and magenta toe polish. Like the Potter books, Platform 13 has multiple dimensions that will appeal to all readers who like an adventure with characters who are a blend of real and offbeat. I'm a grown-up who usually reads books that are supposedly more sophisticated, but I thoroughly enjoyed Platform 13, and look forward to enjoying it a second time as my children read it and we talk about it.

Summary: Great Story
Review: Platform 13 in Kings Cross Station is unused, but noone will tear it down. Under Platform 13 is a gump, a secret opening to another world. The king and queen of that world have a baby who is kidnapped on a visit through the gump. Unfortunately the gump only opens once every nine years and then for only nine days. The royal couple sends a foursome of rescuers to find him at the next gump opening, but do they really want him back?

This is a very well written and enjoyable story. The characters are wonderful and it is suitable for children of all ages.
