Rating: Summary: Basketball and the Tournament of Champions Review: In the middle of Harlem there lies a twentyfour by fifty asphalt pad that has two basketball nets at each end.A group of boys, who consider themselves a team go there everyday to sweat and play hard. In this book Hoops by Walter Dean Myers the main charecter,Lonnie, is one of the biggest basketball stars in his school. One day when he is close to the end of a game, his ability to play is suddenly questioned, with him missing the final shot for his team. After a while he starts to question his own ability.Lonnie is doing worse and worse until he meets a guy named Cal.Cal then changes his life forever. I think that this book was great becaus eof all the cut back on the edge of your seat actionthat make you wonder who is going to win the basketball game. For examplethe game between Lonnie and Sweet Jesus had me wondering who was going to win. This book was full of action and was like watching a Jackie Chan movie. That's why I liked to read the book Hoops by Walter Dean Myers and would recommend it to anyone.

Rating: Summary: NBA wanna be Review: LONNIE JACKSON: tall, strong, fast and hungery to win almost everything needed to become a great basketball player and this is what the book hoops by walter dean myers is all about. Lonnie jackson's one and only passion in life is to play in the NBA. His game is really good when he makes his mind up to join a city turnement to prove to the world that he can play on any level. his entire team is from harlem new york and they have been predicted tred to make it to the final four. To make it this far though they would have to over come many obsticles. I think this book is very well written. this book had is up and downs but over all this was a very good book that not just about basketball its about life. I would reccomend this book to any one who likes basketball or anyone who loves to read.
Rating: Summary: Hoops the good book Review: My book is Hoops and I think it's ok. I recommend this book towards teens. I like the book because its urban action and its time, like 70's slang. The book is about teen's life and problems. The author is probably trying to reach out towards teens that are having situations like in this book, when the store gets robbed. This book would be good for average American teens.

Rating: Summary: Hoops Summary Review: Seventeen-year-old Lonnie Jackson is a star basketball player that dreams about making it into the NBA. There is an important game that he must play in and it will decide if he makes it into the NBA, but the pressure is high because some bettors want Lonnie to blow the game on purpose. Will Lonnie make it to the NBA or will he give in to the pressure? You'll have to read this action packed book to find out!
Rating: Summary: Hoops Summary Review: The book is about a teenager named Lonnie Jackson that wants to make it into the NBA. I didn't find the book too interesting until the final game. (which is in the last 1 or 2 chapters)I don't think someone should read the book unless they know a lot of basketball terms. I also think that boys will probably like this book more than girls. Simply, because it deals with a BOY that wants to make it to the NBA. I didn't enjoy this book too well, but maybe you will! Good luck reading!
Rating: Summary: Another Illustrious Novel By Walter Dean Myers Review: The story is about a guy named Lonnie. It is in Harlem in New York. Lonnie has just finished high school and is able to spend his time playing his favorite sport, Basketball. His biggest dreams are to play basketball for the NBA, to earn a lot of money, and to become very popular. After one of his friends establishes a basketball team, Lonnie, of course, joins the team. But after he is told the name of the trainer, he becomes discouraged because Cal is known as a wino. At first he absolutely declines Cal, but after Cal talked with Lonnie about his past and after the first training lessons, Lonnie accepts him. In Lonnie, Cal sees the young boy that he once used to be himself. So he tries to support Lonnie and advance his skills. After awhile, the team enters into a big tournament. They have won some games and the tournament is coming closer. Meanwhile, the organizer of the tournament tries to convince Lonnie's team that it would be better if Cal, because of his past, wasn't the coach of the team. But his efforts failed to convince them because Lonnie likes Cal and of his support for them too much...
Rating: Summary: Compelling story of the value of true freindship. Review: The story of a young untapped tallent Lonnie jackson learns the lesons of life through his only love Basketball. Cal who is a ex-basketball star plays the role of mentor to young Jackson teaching him the naked truth about the world...it is a cold one. Through the common bond of basketball Cal and Lonnie explore each other, Cal seeing Lonnie as a chance maybe to regain some pride within himself takes the job as coach of a neighboorhood team in a tornament geared to offr the kids a chance to showcase their talents...there is only one problem Cal's past is so dark and murky that the leaders of the tornament don't want him in it. Cal was once regarded as one of the top ball players in the nation on the court his prowless was second to none. Off the court Cal had a bit of a gambling problem and was kicked out of the pro's for "selling his game". Lonnie is a young man 17 years old without much direction to what he is going to do with his life...as most young men lonnie is forced to grow up fast, real fast. Lonnie is one of the more typical kids in the nieghborhood, he likes to chase girls (one in paticular), hang out with friends, works a liitle part time job, has scuffles with his mother, just the typical teenager right..? wrong, lonnie has one of the nicest games on him around. he has a perfect build for the game and talent... tons of it, but the one thing he has the most aboundance of and doesn't relize it (as most young people) is potential. The phrase "you can do anything you put your mind to" is one that tends to be abit misleading. I believe it should be a bit more like, "you can do anything you put your mind to, if you have the guidance". This holds true in life as well as in the story. Walter Dean Meyers is well known for his novels about the hardships of being a young black man in America, but always finds a way to teach some life lesson that we all can apply to our everyday lives!
