Rating: Summary: Excellent Book For The Fantasy Lover Review: Never judge a book by it's cover. This is an amazingly told story about a younge girl who trades lives with her twin brother to fulfil her dream about becoming a knight. The charecters are beautifuly laided out, desricbed , and expressed. All:The First Adventure is a fantasy based book. It does have some facts about knights and battle etc. because I love stories with magic in them, I wsa disopointed that it had only a little heere and there. But I regained that lose later on in the story. This beautiful well written story is only book one of the series. Read it and enjoying being swept into a land where knights still roam.
Rating: Summary: if you like... Review: if you like adventures, romances, and girls standing up for themselves than this book is perfect. alanna hides that she's a girl and trades place with her brother, thom. she then goes to train as a knight. here she makes friends with the crown prince, and the king of the theifs. once you've read this series i would also recogmend the immortals series, this series is about another girl, but you also get to see alanna again, this time as an adult.
Rating: Summary: More, please! Review: I love all of the Alanna series. I've probably read it 15-20 times. I think I like it so much because Tamora Pierce creates charecters root for, like Alanna and George and Jon, and those you just hate. It's such a strong series. She weaves together war and magic and frienship and love so well, I wish the series could just go on and on.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Fantasy Review: This is an inspiring book of one girl's struggle to show that she was just as good in fighting, if not better than boys. I enjoyed this book because it has the elements of fantasy that I love. Magic, swordfighting, interesting characters, and a bit of romance. I can't tell you to buy this book, simply because if I did and you hated it... you would get mad at me. But I read this book twice and I rarely read books twice (I read ALOT). So, if you like fantasy, be interested in this book. If fantasy is too freaky for you, go to another section!!
Rating: Summary: This introduced me to fantasy books Review: My favorite type of books is fantasy all because of this book. Three years ago, when I was in sixth grade, a friend saw me reading "The Woman who Rides Like a Man" over his shoulder (that's the third book in this series), and the next day he brought this book in to school and told me to read it in study hall. I loved it, and borrowed it and took it home where I finished it that night. I then went out and bought the rest of the series. The book is great, with a little resemblence to "Twelfth Night" (no, if you haven't heard of it, it's not a fantasy book. It's a play by Shakespeare. Sorry.) Alanna and her brother switch places, forcing her to disguise herself as a boy (luckily, her brother, Thom, does not have to disguise himself as a girl.) During the beginning of the book, Alanna tries to reject her powerful magical ability. However, she is forced to use it twice, and realizes that her "Gift" is a blessing from the gods, not a curse from them. Meanwhile, Alanna has to train as a knight. She is shorter than the other boys, and has more trouble, at first. But she works hard to overcome her height disadvantage (not by using magic to make herself grow; she tried that once and got a bad headache), and, while beating all the other boys at knighthood, Alanna still has to deal with issues of womanhood. And what will happen when she becomes a knight? She can't be a "boy" forever!
Rating: Summary: girl power Review: Alanna and her twin Thom finally achieve their wishes as they trade places. Alanna goes to the Duke's palace to train to be a knight, and Thom goes to The City Of The Gods to train to be a master sorcerer.Ms Pierce gives her main character, Alanna, strength but also vulnerability and a lot of human qualities. I have read this book over and over again. When Duke Roger, Alanna's friend Prince Jonathan's cousin arrives at the palace, evil lurks. Prince Jonathan almost dies from a mysterious plague that only hits the city but that isn't all. Read this book to find out about the little quirk at the end. This is an excellent book, If you've already read this then read the rest of the series and if you've read them read the rest of Ms Pierce's books, they're all great (Song of the Lioness; The first adventure, In the hand of the goddess, The woman who rides like a man, Lioness Rampant. Immortals Quartet, The 'Circle of Magic' quartet, The 'protector of the small' books, and I'm sure there's more) READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: *speechless* Review: This is a wonderful book that you should most definatelyread. Forget the age range of 9-12. I'm 14, and I still love it! Thisbook is a great mixture of struggle, determination, and a dash of humor to make characters more realistic. I'll make this short and sweet: Read this book!
Rating: Summary: It was okay . . . Review: This book was pretty disappointing - the heroine was SO predictable with the way she acted. It's pointless! Nowadays, all the heroines are striving to be "tough" and falling in love with everyone in sight and still unable to decide when a proposal comes along. This explains her attitude throughout the whole quartet, but I just wanted to say that here to warn readers: don't get your hopes up too high. The book itself is good, with a well-worked plot, but the heroine is just barely tolerable! I almost didn't want to read the rest of her books! Oh, well, I'll leave you people to make your own decisions about this book. Read it! (Even if Alanna is a stuck-up, bratty player!)
