Summary: Rating by a 14 year old
Review: The Song of the Lioness series is one of the 5 incredible series by Tamora Pierce. Alanna is a heroic young girl who lives in a world domminated by males. She disguises herself, and enters a man's world of competition, and adventure. If you like books about girls who don't sit around and wait to be rescued, you'll love these books, and the other series by Tamora Pierce: The Immortals, The Circle of Magic, The Circle Opens, and Protector of the Small. Alanna is brave and practically fearless, and is a role model for girls trying to achieve their dreams everywhere!

Summary: I love it!
Review: I was not sure that I would enjoy reading this book when I selected because I wanted it to be at least slightly believable. The story is about a young girl named Alanna who wants to become a knight. She was suppose to be going to a school to become a mage because she has magic called "The Gift". She has a twin brother named Thom who is suppose to become a knight but he wants to become a mage. The decide to switch places. Boys can become mages but Alanna pretends to be a boy by the name of Alan.

I loved this book because you never want to put it down and it always keeps you on the edge. I also love how it shows how strong girls can be and how they are able to keep up.

She ends up making friends with royalty and with the king of theives. I am not going to say any more because I would hate to ruin such an amazing book for anyone!

Summary: A book that will pretty much please anyone ....
Review: Alanna and her brother Thom have grown up with a great deal of freedom while thier scholar father buries himself in his work. When they turn 11 they are due to be sent ofr training, but by swithing places Alanna is sent to become a Page (the first part of training to become a knight) and Thom goes to learn magic. That switch begins a life where Alanna must hide who she really is from her friends and work hard to become a knight. In this first book in the Song of the Lioness Quartet Alanna becomes friends with Prince Jonathan, makes enemies with his Uncle, and meets the thief that will become a very important part of her life.

I found this series of books when it first came out and I have been blown away every time I have picked them up to read. Alanna is one of my favourite characters of all time - she is strong, funny, and sticks to her guns. The other characters around her like Prince Jonathan and George are like old friends who share their lives with you. Tamora Pierce has an amazing knack of bringing the medieval world they live in to life without dragging you down with too many details.

If you enjoy a great book that will have you on the edge of your seat then this is the book to try. Ms. Pierce has combined action adventure, knights and battles, magic, and romance all into one seamless book that appeals to boys and girls AND children and adults. My copy of this book is very well loved and I have continued to devour every Tamora Pierce book that has been written since.

If you do enjoy this series then you should also try other books by Tamora Pierce and also try reading Mercedes Lackeys Valdemar books.

Summary: Great Book!
Review: This was a very good book. Alanna doesn't want to become a lady,or learn magic(she wants to be a knight) and her brother, Thom, doesn't want to be a knight (he wants to be a sorcerer). So what's logical? Switch! And switch they do. The story goes around Alanna's story, and her life becoming a knight. Most of all, she must accept that she is a girl, and learn to live and work with it. This book starts to get a bit 'mature' in the 7th(?) chapter. But it is a very good book. I was hooked.
As for flaws, Alanna is very heedless and foolish at times, sometimes so much you want to yell at her right there. The way Pierce draws out Alanna's rivalry(what to call it?) with 'someone' else is slightly unbearable at times, but overall, this book was great.

Summary: Nice & Fun plus a role model heroine
Review: The book is really easy to read, moves fast has all the ingredients for a "not to let it go read until you finish", I found myself not wanting to even eat or sleep until it was over, only to re-read my favourite chapters after. If you are a teen it takes you to a wonderful word where you would like to be part of the group and if you are a grown up (as myself) you will go back 20 years and feel like reading this kind of books again. Alana is strong and brave in spite of her failures and problems ( her father doesnt cares about her or her bhother, she is the smaller of the class, etc) doesn't give up on her dream on becoming a knight. She also finds wonderful friends and lives fantastic adventures. It fits for 8 year girls or more, not recommended for boys and although its part of a quartet I will warn parents for the 3 books after this one, which I think are suitable for older girls since begins when she is 16 and contains brief references to her relationships with 3 different swains on a medieval moral context where she doesn't really cares to be considered a Lady, but a knight instead. Any way this first book stands on its own and does provide a nice role model untill half the 2nd book.

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: If you like this fantasy just a little bit you will love this book! Alanna is a daughter of a noble scholar that has lost all interest in anything other then his work after his wife died giving birth to Alanna and her brother, Thom. He is now sending his twins away to the capital, where Thom will be a knight, and the City of Gods where Alanna will become a proper lady. There is only one problem, Alanna wants to be a knight, not lady, and Thom doesn't want to be a knight, he wants to be a sorcerer. Logically, (or not so logically) Alanna thinks a plan where they switch places; Alanna cuts her hair and goes to the Palace, and Thom goes to the City of Gods to become a sorcerer (he doesn't have to pretend to be girl because the people at the City of Gods also teach young boys to become sorcerers). The story follows Alanna through her trials at the Palace, making friends, becoming a strong young 'man' instead of a weak little girl, and semi-learning to deal with her magic. A wonderful beginning to a wonderful series. One of the great things about this book is it's character developement, by the time I had finished the book I felt that I knew the characters.

Summary: Alanna Dreamcatcher: An Inspiration!
Review: This wonderful novel is just the beginning of the innovative series "Song of the Lionness" by Tamora Pierce. We first meet the determined young Alanna planning to switch places with her twin brother Thom in order to escape life as a well-bred young lady minding the way her skirts lie. Instead, Alanna dreams of becomming a knight. There's only one problem -- Alanna is a girl. Nevertheless, Alanna leaves her home in Trebond to follow those dreams. Disguised as a small, short boy called "Alan," Alanna manages to keep up with the supposedly stronger boys -- and even manages to defeat them sometimes. Through trials and tribulations, Alanna finds a new life and new friends at the palace where she trains as a page. Facing some of her own shortcomings and learning what crosses the boundaries between girls and boys, Alanna finds a place in her new home. Few things make her uneasy -- besides her sword lessons and Prince Jonathan's Uncle Roger. Will Alanna defeat her fears or return home to Trebond?

Although the idea of a female warrior, often in disguise, is not new, Ms. Pierce presents it in a creative and intriguing manner. Readers of all ages are drawn into Alanna's life, seeing the world from Alanna's idealistic eyes. The book is very well written and leaves readers with a sense of satisfaction and triumph. As we live with Alanna, we feel empowerred -- Alanna has followed her dreams, and so can we.

This inspired novel captures the essence of determination, courage, and friendship while mixing in fantasy, magic, and an astonishingly well-crafted world. Ms. Pierce borrows ideas and customs from the real world and ingeniously mixes them in a blender until they become an amazing new place to explore.

A job well done! Even if you can borrow this from a library, I would suggest buying your own copy. This is one of the books that you will re-read again and again if you like the genre. My own copy has traveled the world and been in the most unlikely of places with me. Put your worries aside and be prepared to be swept away!
