Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: This book is a fantastic story about magic and the fight between good vs evil. It is the first of a wonderful series of books I have loved since I was a child. Miss Cooper outdid herself! The descriptions, the storytelling, everything combines to keep the reader so entranced. This will be a book you cannot put down. You will find yourself transported away to a world of magic. Will Stanton and Merryman fight to bring together the signs of power, made by the old ones centuries before. This is a fantastic story! Great for ages 7-77!
Rating: Summary: This book is the greatest ever! Review: Yes I am using Merriman's name as mine, I liked this book so much. Crystal Sword! like in Final Fantasy! Enough from me. Read this, or be marked as a servant of the Dark.
Rating: Summary: Kept me hanging ON! Review: This was SSSOO good! I could not ever put it down~ What is going to happen to Will? What next? NOT THE RIDER? I think this is a very good book for 11-15 age.Not too scary, but just thrilling enough!
Rating: Summary: Before Harry Potter there was..... Review: Will Stanton! I discovered these books years ago as a teenager. I've kept a copy of The Dark is Rising in my nightstand for over 15 years. When I want to meander to a far off place just before bed,I pull out my dog-eared copy and read about the adventures of Will! It still is vivid and exciting after all these years!
Rating: Summary: The Dark is Rising, dude Review: I read The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, which is a classic battle between good and evil. This is a wonderful tale about Will Stanton. On his eleventh Birthday, he is plunged into a quest full of mystery, deceit, betrayal, and strange creatures. Will must find the six magic Signs and stop the Dark before it's too late. I thought The Dark is Rising was a great adventure book for any kid, but you don't have to take MY word for it!
Rating: Summary: Can You Say Deus Ex Machina? Review: Having learned in the beginning of the book that Will can't be killed or even harmed, I never felt he or anyone else was in much peril. Most of the Signs seemed to fall into his lap rather easily, his obstacles(such as they were) were largely overcome with help from external forces, and his mistakes never cost him much. The first third of the book was short on action and long on exposition. And there were a couple of glaring plot inconsistencies. Okay, the descriptive writing was quite good and the dialogue was believable. But this isn't even close to being great children's literature.
Rating: Summary: I thought this was terrible! Review: This was certainly not my cup of tea, and was extremely difficult to get the jist of. Worded awkwardly, I didn't quite understand it, and lost the plot many times throughout. This was not because the book is too old for me but because I don't think the book is written very well that it explained things enough. Many of the reviews rate this book highly but I found it boring and confusing.
Rating: Summary: Good Children's Books Are Hard To Find Review: I found this book by accident as a child and read them all before I was through. The discriptive language and wonderful imagery are rarely matched in any children's book. Stop buying petty paperbacks and enjoy the depth and expert craftsmanship of books like The Dark Is Rising series.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter lovers... Review: If your child loves fantasy, romance and magic this series is a MUST! It has probably been about 20 years since I finished the series and I can still quote parts verbatim. I had to wait for Ms. Cooper to finish each book before I could read it - buy your kid the full series now!
Rating: Summary: Terrific Book Review: I read this book in 6th grade, and I loved every page of it. It's fast-paced and very exciting. It has multiple levels, although the basic plot itself is enjoyable enough. I strongly recommend it for higher (children) readers.
