Rating: Summary: A wonderfully mysterious book Review: While "Over Sea, Under Stone" was completely ridiculous, and not fantanstic at all, this book truly sets the standard. It's feel is like that of "Dark Shadows". I certainly hope this is never made into a movie, there's absolute nothing in it that would require post-60s special effects technology, and so the director would inevitably make stuff up so he coudl throw in absurd amounts of CGI technology.
Rating: Summary: This book is for everyone. Amazing! Review: I first read the Dark is Rising sequence in 8th grade and am now re-reading it at the age of 21. I still feel the magic and splendor of the series. It's the best fantasy I've ever read and I am a true bookworm with a library of Tolkien, Lewis, and even Rowling. This book has unexplainable magic and is brilliantly crafted by Ms. Cooper. In fact, the entire series is a must-read for anyone and everyone, regardless of age. Just spectacular!
Rating: Summary: The Dark is Rising Review: The main character in this stry is Will Stanton. Will always thought that he was a regular boy. In a mid winter's day, the day before his birthday, his life changed forever. He started to get these weird signs and coincidences. Like how animals are scared of him, seeing things that other people aren't abled to see, and the feeling of being terrified all the time came to him. He saw this dark person with a white horse. Then he met up with a group called the Old Ones. He found out that he was the last hope and the last one born of their kind. So he is the end of the generation or sequence. He also finds out that he is a sign seeker. A sign seeker is a person who has to find and guard the signs. So he learns what his job is and his purpose. He was destined to battle against the Dark and bring back the powers back to the good. Will has to guard 6 signs of light, fire, water, stone, bronze, iron, and wood. In the end if he finds all 6 signs, put them together, there will be enough power to overcome the Dark side. The book to me was alright. But it was still good. It was kind of difficult for me to understand. I would give this book a 4. Just thinking of how Susan Cooper came up with this story is amazing.
Rating: Summary: the dark is rising Review: The Dark Is Rising By: Susan Cooper Reviewed By: JGagnier Period 1 The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper is a very good book. It is about a boy named Will who finds out he is of a special group called the "old ones". The " old ones'" job is to keep the dark from taking over. Will sets out on a quest to find the signs. I really enjoyed this book. There is not much that I can say bad about it, except I did not think that Merriman was fit to be the butler, I think that he would be more fit to be the owner of the manor. ""A light for your candles," Merriman said in low respectable tones", Merriman is just not a follower or a servant, he is more of a leader or a master. There are so many good things about this book that I could not begin to write about, so I will just touch on a few of them. This book keeps you in suspense and is very hard to put down. The plot of the story is very interesting. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. My favorite part of the book is when Will wakes up on his birthday and everyone else was in a deep sleep. When he left the house he noticed that everything was different, and then he found out that he had been brought to a different time. I like this part because of the subtle suspense that is there, but more in the background. This part also has a feeling of mystery.
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: The Dark is Rising is a bold and intriguing book and it is one of the best books that I myself have ever read. Read this book and you'll look at reading in a very different way. This is one of those books for people who dont like reading. Once you start you cant put it down!
Rating: Summary: The Dark Is Rising, a Book Review by Chris Review: The Dark Is Rising The Dark The Dark Is Rising, a book by Susan Cooper, is all about a 10-year-old boy named Will, who, on his 11th birthday, discovers an amazing power hidden inside him since birth. He was the last of The Circle of all-knowing all-seeing people of The Light that could travek through time as they please. The Circle included a man named Merriman, another man named Farmer George, Farmer Dawson, his wife, and an old lady know as The Lady. Merriman, the first of The Circle, told Will all about his new power, why he was born with it, and what him, The Light, and The Circle were meant to protect The Dark from domination of the world. The Dark includes The Rider, The Walker, and a witch lady by the name of Maggie. This story gets off to kind of a wierd start, but once you get into the book you won't be able to stop reading it. This book is very adventurous, exciting, and a real thriller, Will finds himself in several run-ins with The Dark. Every now and then expect yourself to fall into suspense as to what will happen next. This is very good and it is very much worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Darkness Is Doomed Review: The Dark is Rising is a good book. It has a twisting plot with lots of adventure. The book has very interesting characters and a variety of settings. The book is fiction, but I feel that it is a fantasy book also. The book is about a young boy who laerns that he is crucial in the worlds survival and that he is an old one. Old ones are people from the begining of time and they can travel through time. In this book the boy, Will, has to learn the ways of the old ones in a very short period of time. Will is a sign seeker and must find signs to create a magical circle. Will must race against the dark, who are trying to destroy the signs, in a battle for earth. Will, along with his companion Merriam will have to fight the whole way against all kinds of darkness. This quest is going to be difficult. Can Will survive If you like fantasy novels or some of the books or series below you should like this book. His Dark Materials Harry Potter The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Chrestomanci The Golden Compass To any fantasy-lover I highly recomend this book and the rest of the Dark is Rising series.
Rating: Summary: Decent children's literature, not much else Review: Good for kids and young teens, this book will be largely unsatisfying to anyone older, because of the simplistic nature of the conflict (Light vs Dark, doesnt get much simpler than that, the simplistic structure of the problem (gather six signs) and the lack of very original stuff throughout the book. The book has quite a well-written atmosphere of dread, and at times the plot pacing and events (involving multiple times and futures) can be quite complex, but on the whole this is good, solid children's literature without too much that really captivates. As a result it deserves a 3 star rating, which is not bad, as I like to use the whole spectrum of stars when giving ratings.
Rating: Summary: Longing for A Continuation Review: This book was recommended to me by a sixth-grade school teacher that I met at a bookstore one day. She was interested in writing books for children; along with this book she bought The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander. I bought it without really knowing what to expect and was very surprised. This book is very interesting and I plan to read or listen to it again some day. My family and I are very much interested in Celtic and Welsh legends anyway. One thing that I think is very ironic is that Will is extremely young and yet so very old. (Example: The Rider's visit to the Stanton family at Christmas) I went on to read the book Greenwitch and became interested in the friendship that sprang up between Will and Jane. I can't help wishing that Susan Cooper would one day bring the characters back at a later time when they are older. Yes, being grown now I crave a little romance, and I would like to see Will with female companionship.
