Summary: A Rather Bizarre Retelling of Snow White
Review: Jessica never really knew what it was like to have a family. Her mother died giving birth to her and her father was not interested in having a daughter. She saw her father once a year when he did his inspection and the rest of the time she had the run of the Welsh estate that belonged to the duke, her father. More then a bit of a tomboy, Jessica did not come to the notice of her father and her coldly beautiful new stepmother until she accused one of the sons of the nobility of attacking her. Suddenly, it was not okay for Jessica to run around playing with the other boys. Instead, she was under the tutelage of her stepmother, who was determined to instruct her on everything she needed to know about being a lady. However, her stepmother quickly grew jealous of Jess' beauty and, with her father gone, locked her away with only a few mice for company. Warned by her stepmother's minstrel, Jess managed to flee for London when her stepmother's jealousy was replaced with the belief that she could only have a child if she had Jess' heart.

Jess was only in London for a few moments when all of her money was stolen. Bereft and alone, she took refuge in an alley, until a cat-like girl attacked her and kidnapped her. When Jess awoke she was stunned to see herself surrounded by a group of animal-like humans. There was Chauncey, the rat-like leader of the ragtag band; Cat, the only girl who had attacked Jess in the alley and seemed determined to hate her; Sparrow, a short, plump boy who was very quiet; Raven, a tall, dark and handsome fellow who never seemed to say anything; and Mouser, who was as elegant as the high-born lords of London. Jess, or Snow as she now called herself, settled into her peculiar new life and found that she was happier as a serving maid than as a duke's daughter. But her stepmother did not give up easily and was ready to use any trick to get Jess to participate in her new "experiment"...

This was a very peculiar adaptation of Snow White, but it was still very enjoyable. Snow herself is still much the same, but the 7 dwarfs are turned into the 5 Lonely Ones (the animal-like people described above), the magic mirror is the minstrel and the wicked stepmother is a scientist of sorts who actually created the Lonely Ones. Even though the details of the story were quite different, it is still a happily ever after tale and I enjoyed the different twists and turns that the author took in creating the tale. If you enjoy fairy tales, then you will enjoy this book!

Summary: Once Upon A Time....
Review: Long ago in Wales, there lived a Duke and his Duchess. More than anything, they wanted a child of their own. After many years of waiting, the Duchess discovered that she was expecting. But the time of joy turned into a time of sorrow when the Duchess died from giving birth to a daughter. The Duke lost himself in his own grief and seemed to forget he even had a daughter. Jessica, as her mother had named the child with her final breath, grew up helping Cook in the kitchen and playing with the servants' children. And she was happy.

But change was coming. Although the Duke did not want to marry again, for the good of his people he needed an heir. And so he took a beautiful English rose as his bride.

Jessica was excited at first. She wanted a mother very badly. The new duchess was not the kind of mother Jessica craved, but she was nice enough in her own way. Jessica thought that she would be content, even if she was not as free as she had been as a young child.

Time passed and the new Duchess had not yet born a child...and she was not getting any younger. But more than that disturbed the beauty. She had heard that people were calling Jessica very fair, perhaps the fairest of them all. And THAT simply would not do...

They say that Jessica's stepmother is a great beauty, that's true...some call her something else too...a witch.

Summary: Wonderful and true to the original
Review: Once upon a time, there was a reviewer who loved fairy tales. She discovered a luminous retelling of Snow White complete with a stepmother's jealous vanity, kindly yet isolated 'miners,' and a deathlike sleep, and, after giving the book five stars, lived happily ever after.
When a duke's wife dies during the birthing of their long awaited child, the motherless darling grows up in the kitchens until her father remarriage (coinciding with her puberty). The duke's new wife takes the tomboyish Jessica under her wing to become a lady. Desperate to both remain youthful and have a babe of her own, the vain yet intelligent stepmother practices many foul experiments, trading her patronage for the help of Alan, a hired violist. When the mad woman decides the heart of her stepdaughter will bring her heart's desire, Alan helps Jessica escape to the city, where she meets bizarre creatures of the night who hire her as their maid and caretaker. As one would expect, the evil stepmother discovers her rival is still alive, and seeks her out, eventually spelling her into a long deep sleep that only the famed clockmaker can bring her out of.
The tale is embellished with a bewitched character who lends personification to the mirror, and a turn-of-the-century English setting almost makes the story believable as a historical event that evolved to legend and finally to fairy tale status. The short chapters offer a variety of viewpoints without confusing the reader, and although we know the basic plot elements and the outcome, how Lynn gets there is a bit mysterious from the prologue, which takes place partway through the story. The role of the prince is filled unexpectedly, the explanation of the mirror brilliant, and the industrial revolution and the role of women in society season the plot. With all her alterations, Lynn remains true to the underlying message that youth is fleeting but true inner beauty is forever (and more desirable), and adds one of her own, culled from Arthurian legend: the key to a woman's heart is giving her freedom of choice. Superbly done.

Summary: A very good book, very believable, I LOVED it!!!!!
Review: Snow is about a girl who is trapped by her stepmother and made to do chores all day long. She ends up being called the most beautiful, fey thing in all the land. She runs away to London to save her lifee after being warned by Alan, her step-mother's helper. She ends up joining up with the Lonely Ones, and eventually gets put to sleep. I won't ruin the ending, so that's all I'm going to say. By the way, I LOVED IT!!!!!

Summary: Snow
Review: Snow, by Tracy Lynn, is yet another addition to the amazing series of Once Upon a Time... This series is a retelling of fairytales, and this one was one of the best there are. Jessica is the only daughter of a duchess of Wales, who died while giving birth to her. Her devastated father ignores Jessica, not wanting to be reminded of his loss. He marries a shallow, smart woman who performs many experiments in the hopes of becoming a scientist. The new duchess has a servant/musician,Alan, who is forced to hold up a mirror up for the duchess to study herself every night. The duchess is obsessed with her beauty and with having a child, and when her stepdaughter, Jessica, threatens to become the new 'fairest in the land,' and the duchess cannot get pregnant because of her age, the duchess sees no other choice but to kill her. However, she first imprisons Jessica for many years, making her a servant in her own home and rendering her skin so pale she becomes known as Snow. Jessica is too trusting and very naive, and when Alan warns her of the duchess's murderous plans, she flees to London. She quickly loses her purse and does not know how to survive in the big city. Jessica meets five unlikely people who call themselves 'The Lonely Ones,' and all of whom have human and animal features. The duchess scours the city as Jessica uncovers the mystery of their past and her own. She also manages to find true love where she never expected it, and together with the Lonely Ones they must work so save Jessica's life. This is an absolutely amazing read that keeps you spellbound on the edge of your seat. This twisted fairytale cam make magic and still has the perfect happy ending...even better than the one in the real Snow White.

Summary: GREAT re-write of the original and GOOD ending!
Review: The ending extremely satisfied me. It had a little mystery in it and it was a GREAT re-write of the original story. Actually, I would DEFINITELY say I liked THIS version better! Well actually, I don't know what is the original one but this one is WAY better than Disney's version of it. It has romance, a touch of mystery, fantasy, and that good old "villian" in it. GREAT book! Buy it!

Summary: fantastic
Review: this book was wonderfully written. though it was far from the original story of "snow white", it was a beautiful book. i love fairy tales, especially ones with magic in them. yet it is nice to see that ms. lynn decided to replace science with magic. i also love how she keeps you wondering about how the story will turn out even though you know how the original story goes. unlike most of the other "once apon a time..." books, this novel is not a disapointment. this is a great book to read during a rainy day with a cup of hot coco.

Summary: Snow
Review: This is the best book ever. I read it when I was in Hawaii and I just couldn't put the book down. The story is kind-of just basic Snow White but way funnier and way better. If you can't decide whether or not to buy this book, what are you waiting for?I think that 6th grade and up should be required to read this book. I love it so much!

Summary: Too overdone
Review: When I first picked up this book I thought it would be a cool 'spinoff' book which would twist the story with new light. Unfortunately, I found the story line complicated and the characters under-developed and also confusing. Keeping track of who was who and what was what (as some characters are animals) and then crossing over again meant I lost interest very quickly. The initial idea was good - but I feel that the author lost the story with too many characters and too much of descriptive passages.
