Rating: Summary: sparkling Review: This is one of the most beautiful books i've ever read. It isso subtle yet so strong and heartbreaking at points. In the typicalBlock fairy-tale style which made me fall in love with her writings in the first place, we are told the story of Laurel, a very lost 17 year old girl trying to find herself in the lush and poisonous setting of LA. It was so hypnotic and intoxicating, i felt as though i was seeing the world high the whole time i was reading. Some sections were so harsh yet sweet in those small important ways, that i cried. and some of it just hit to close to home. her world, no matter how she dresses it up in flowery words and exotic backgrounds, is REAL . and i think that that is the most appealing part of all. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Rating: Summary: A truly magical and complex book Review: This is the first book I read of Francesca Lia Block's, and after having read all of them thus far, this still stands out in my head and the most powerful and deeply-moving one of all. Block transports us into Laurel's world with the same amount of confusion, frustration, passion, and bottled up emotions. Her beautifullt lyrical prose lets you escape up into the hills with the freaks, and the animals, and the sparks of fireworks, and popping bubbles. It is so grounded in the harsh reality of drugs, abuse, eating disorders, death, and relationships, but the writing has a magical feeling to it, YOU WILL feel different after reading it.
Rating: Summary: Absolute prose! Amazing read. Review: This is the first Francesca Lia Block book that I have read. I have to say that her writing style is delicious. At first I wasn't sure at all, but she writes in a stream of consciousness style that is easily addictive. I must say that the description is the most wonderful I have seen for a long time. This book brings so much to the senses and is a delight! I can't wait to read the Weetzie Bat books that I've ordered. If you enjoy the juice of a rare but perfectly ripe pear, and the glimmer of fine jewels, combined with the roughness or burlap, this is for you. This is a great novel of self-discovery and utilizes the tarot cards in an emazing way. I loved it!
Rating: Summary: One of Block's best! Review: This was the first Block book I ever read, and it was the best so far. This book mixes fantasy and reality, making Hollywood look even more mysterious as we want it to be. A somewhat hard and boring beginning, but worth reading to the end. Has its faulty parts, but doesn't every book? It is hard to stay with the plot the whole time because of the flash backs, but the plot does hold strong. This book is worth buying but recommended for a older/more mature teenage crowd.
Rating: Summary: young adult's are ghosts Review: though i was somewhat sceptical about reading this book when i found out it was classified as a young adult novel, i loved the cover so much i bought it. what is more interesting and prevalent i found than the fact it's a story of a teenager girl who's been abused, is more of the haunted sense of the life she now lives in the sleepy, priviliged and depraved climate of L.A. written in a style very evocative and insightful despite its minimalist tendencies. its so short and beautiful a book that, if i was still a teenager , i might say reading it was almost like an afternoon reverie. now i head to the bathroom without speaking and stay in there for way too long and come out singing 'Happy' by keith richards.
Rating: Summary: Did not meet my expectaions Review: Upon finishing this book I didn't really know what to think. Writeen in very poetic language, it passed as though it was a dream. I never really felt like i got a clear picture of characters or events, everything seeming as though it was covered with fog, preventing me from getting too close to anything or anyone. Still there was something enchanting about the poetic descriptions, but it didn't leave me feeling completely satisfied. My expectations for this book were high and i was let down.
