Summary: Confusing yet beautiful
Review: This book is a must read for and FLB fan. This book is a bit more on the real side as compared to The Weetzie Bat Books or I Was A Teenage Fairy, but it still has some magic of its own. I couldn't put this one down. If you are not familiar with Block's writing style, I would suggest reading another book first (i.e. Dangerous Angels or I was a Teenage Fairy)because it can get a bit confusing. Overall, this is a great quick read.

Summary: Coping, Learning, Loving
Review: This book is an exciting mix of abstract reality and the genuine human feelings that leaves the reader both mystified and refreshed. Though it is classified as young adult, it has the symbolism and deep meaning that makes it great for any age. Five stars is simply not enough

Summary: A thought provoking, realistic look at teenage life
Review: This book is deeply thought provoking. It's great for group discussion. A group of three of us read this book in 8th grade in a Literature group. People who read this book need to be aware of the mature content because we were quite surprised! This book took alot of discussion for us to fully understand what the author was trying to express. It was a shocking story, but the most shocking of all is when you realize that this book presents real life issues with little exagerrations. As we got through the elements of the plot we noticed that Mrs. Block's use of dreamy fantasies were a release for the main character's boiled up emotions. Although we found The Hanged Man a challenging read, we were glad that we could go back to our group and talk about the different levels of meaning. Despite the initial shock and the challenge of the novel, we learned alot and definately recommend you read it.

Summary: Great book!
Review: This book is kind of a retreat from FLB's usual glittery haze books. I found it to be a little more gritty, a bit darker but no less beautiful.
The story is moving and powerful and the use of Tarot cards throughout the book gives it that mysterious power that captivates.

Summary: The Hanged Man- Francesca Lia Block
Review: This book was amazing. Block is my favorite writer and the way the she captures the emotion of her characters is far behond any other fiction writer that I have ever read. Her dark, gloomy vibe that she sends in her books are almost intoxicating. I recomend this and other Block books to any teenage girl.

Summary: A Dark and Passionate Tale of Veiled Emotions
Review: This is a brooding yet magical tale of destruction and recovery, another masterpiece from teen-angst author Francesca Lia Block. Seventeen year-old Laurel knows that when her father dies of the cancer which plagues his body, the sexual abuse that her mother deliberately remained oblivious to, will end. What she doesn't realize is that the pain, manifested in the form of anorexia, will linger on. Encouraged by her self-abusing best friend, Claudia and the repulsion she has for her mother's docile life, Laurel thrusts herself into the dangerous California party-scene with all of its excitement and glittering dangers.
At the same time, she is involved in a series of sexual encounters with her mysterious demon-lover, Jack, who is always by her side. Gradually, with this ominous yet gentle relationship, she is forced to confront her painful past which resulted in conflicting feelings about her father, a determination to be thin enough to disappear, and an aborted pregnancy. It is only when she shatters the walls of her frigid exterior that she is able to begin to heal.

This is a fabulous novel. It is a glittering and eerie tale of the dangers of L.A.'s glamorous party-scene, where life is often on a lane that is moving way too fast. The story is light and wispy 'as a veil' and it may confuse people. There is no concrete truth or understanding of this story and it is highly interpretive. It is also fairly short, which may attract the reluctant reader. One will appreciate the strength depicted in Laurel despite her pain, Jack's perverse kindness, and the boldness of the best friend, Claudia. This is another treasure from Francesca Lia Block. "The Hanged Man" throws an audacious, new light on the controversial topics of sexual abuse, abortion, and anorexia, with a reverence for the teenage love of experimentation and the California landscape.

Summary: Good, but could have been better..
Review: This is a dark, interesting book, that I just finished an hour ago. I am Block fan, and Echo being my first block book, followed by I was a teenage fairy, I didnt find this book as well written. It cuts off major details and I finished it in about an hour. The book ends too fast, and they leave you guessing about her boyfriend Jack, and her other friend (cant remember name)...I think it should have been atleaset 30 pages longer. I found myself thinking that this girl is crazy for not eating. Its more "Dark" then Block's other books, but it was overall good.
I reccomend this book to Block fans, and fans of dark books. I was going to stop in the middle of this book b/c it got quite boring, but i finished it for the sake of finishing it! I am glad i finished it. And being a 13 year old, I know what I like. And this book is definetly a page turner! ( at times...)
