Rating: Summary: Simon's Road to Popularity Review: Life's not always fair, I think that we can all agree with that. Someone may do something totally wrong and not get in trouble for it, while you on the other hand get blamed for everything and do nothing. This is how Young Steward felt in Shattering Glass. Young and his friends make a huge mistake that they never intended on doing. This is an easy-to-read book that will keep you turning page after page, it's lesson is one that you will never forget.Young Steward is a part of Rob's posse. Rob Haynes moved to B'Vale their junior year, Young and himself became fast friends and stayed that way. Now it is their senior year and with assistance from their two buds, Coop and Bobster, they plan on transforming the class reject into Mr. Popularity. Simon Glass is overweight and a dork, constantly being bullied around by Lance, the used-to-be popular one, until Rob came along. While the gang helps Simon to become the stud of their senior class, Simon helps them along the way. However, through all of this helping and generosity, Young, Coop, Bobster, and Rob begin to hate Simon just as everyone else does. They vent their anger towards him one night during the homecoming dance in the equipment room. The outcome is horrific, and not planned at all. Shattering Glass is full of action, language, and has a twist of romance that will keep you turning pages until you reach the end. Life's not fair, no matter how many times we say it, it'll always be true, no matter how hard we wish, it'll always be true, no matter what... it will always be true. This story of how four boys totally wrecked their lives during their teen years is heartfelt and tragic, but contains that perfect life lesson. Life's not fair, but sometimes you just gotta deal with what you've been dealt. This book is wonderful for high school students who have that certain enemy that they wish weren't there. It's also a great book for adults to draw that life lesson from and to always remember. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: Once I started reading Shattering Glass I could not put it down. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter put me on edge wondering what had gone seriously wrong in the relationships of these characters. I found all the characters very real. I think Shattering Glass will win many awards and is something that everyone should read.
Rating: Summary: A Shattering Tale of Reality Review: Power hungry Alpha-Male Rob Hynes, along with his crew girl-attracting Bobster, intellectual Young (who narrates the story), and sweet athletic Coop take on the seeming impossible job of turning type A-nerd Simon Glass into class Favorite. Along the way to popularity Simon finds his devious new courage to stand on his own two feet. He snoops his way into Rob's overly private backround to find what will be a deadly secret. When Simon takes over Rob's control of votes for class favorite and confronts the group with Rob's past, it results in a "shattering" conclusion. This is a great book with relatable situations. It is so realistic and well written with words that bring the scene to life, that you feel like you are a spectator watching it all happen. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter are good insight to what happened in the end of the book and keep you guessing right down to the last page.
Rating: Summary: Suspensful Thriller Review: Shattering Glass by Gail Giles is a suspenseful thriller about a high school clique that wants to make the class goof into the class favorite. The story is narrated by one of the boys from the clique, straight A student, Young Stewart. Stewart tells of how they transform Simon Glass from class loser to class favorite. Simon gets too caught up in his quest for popularity and is no longer liked by the clique. They take it upon themselves to straighten Glass out. I found this book to be enlightening of how some high school kids can really get caught up in the race for popularity. I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who likes suspenseful books with twisted and disturbing endings.
Rating: Summary: Shattering Glass Review: Shattering Glass shatters many, possibly all other mystery or drama books that I've read in quality, plot and realism. This book would probably appeal to many people, especially if you like drama, mystery, or even humorous books, because of the author's ability to include all of these genres into her story. You will also like this story if you like surprise endings. The main character in this story is Young Steward, a high school student who also narrates the story. Him and his friends, deemed the "popular crowd" because of different reasons, had recently started following a boy by the name of Rob around, a new student who was instantly a hit with everyone because of his looks and his calm and cool attitude. At the time, they all thought they knew when he came up with what seemed like an impossible task, turn the biggest nerd in school, Simon Glass, into one of them, a popular kid. As the book goes on, Young, Rob and their friends, Coop, a gridiron hero who is popular because of his amazing athletics, and Bobster, the cool kid in the school with the good looks, even if he can be really corny sometimes, basically taught Simon how to be cool, in exchange for little thingsthat he did for them. But as the story would go on, Simon would get a mind of his own, and let's just say Rob didn't like to try and control a mind that would try and fight back.
Rating: Summary: great novel Review: Shattering Glass was a great piece by Gail Giles. She covers just about everything in this bullied teenagers life and the struggle he goes through until his friends make him popular. Many teenagers go through this every day in school; some never get over it. This story captures deep emotions and everything the character feels throughout the story. This book is suspenseful and it is also a book that can have you sitting for hours.
Rating: Summary: DHS Student, Grade 9 Review: Shattering Glass, written by Gail Giles was one of the best mystery books I have read. This book is not only teenage material but also young adult. The setting takes place in a hometown like my own mostly in a High School area. Simon Glass is the main character along with Young. Young is the boy who tries to change Simon from being the geekiest kid in school to the most popular. Young's best friend Rob has been lying to them since he has moved there. As they find everything out, they end up just leaving things as is with Rob. Simon worked hard to change for his buddies and it really payed off at the end of the book. I believe this book is written for young teens just going through highschool or younger years of college. This book really shows the other side of teenagers while around friends and trying to act as if you are someone else. It deals with love, lies and the "leader" of your click. The author made this book interesting to read. She kept everything until the end of the book. This made you read more and more of the book. The author had a good view of the teenagers personality. It was easy to read because most of us teenagers go through peer pressure everyday. She made a great visual perspective. She made it believable by the expressions and the dialog. The voice of the characters was strong and demanding at times but that made you read on. This book will grab your heart and hold onto it if you read it long enough. I am the type of reader who judges the book by its cover. If it looks old, I don't read it. When I began to read this, it really showed me how good of friends they were. How far would your friends go for you? You may never know.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ!!! Review: Shattering Glass, written by Gail Giles, was a terrific teen book. The book touches on topics such as love, lies, and a follow the leader type of feeling. The story takes place in a south western town, and is about a group of teenage boys who chose to take the "geekiest" boy in the school and attempt to make him "the class favorite" by the end of the year. Young is one of the main characters of the story; he faces a lot of hardships, because of the way his friend Rob wants things to turn out with Simon Glass, the nerd. Young discovers that Rob has been lying to them, about who he is and where is from, this gives Young a sense of betrayal, but he tries to understand, and doesn't say anything to Rob about it. The way the book is written has you wanting more until you reach the end, but then you still want more. The book is interesting because of the way it is written, you think one thing will happen and another thing does. It also keeps you guessing. The book shows a darker side to highschool students. The book is overall very interesting and fun to read, however, in the beginning it is a little slow, but it picks up momentum quickly, however, and nothing major happens till around the last three pages of the book. It is however, catching, and an excellent book. The only problem is it takes too long to get to the most shocking part, but it is as I have said overall a good book. The author does a great job at describing the life of a teenager, the fact that there is a major "social class" in highschool was depicted in the book in a perfect light. The book shows how peer pressure is a major way of the typical teenage lifestyle. I love to read books, but I am very picky on which books I read, if a book doesn't grab my interest with in the first chapter I don't finish it. Shattering Glass grabbed my interest within the first few pages. The book affected me in many different ways, it showed how far some people would go for friends, and it shows the pressure of highschool, which I can really relate to, but it put it in a different point of view. My opinions on the topic in this book has not changed at all, I agreed with everything the author wrote, and the book was everything I thought it would be and more. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books that hit on real subjects, for someone who wants to read what really happens in the world but in a fictional viewpoint. This was a great book and I highly recommend it. It would also make a great movie! I hope you like the book, and enjoy reading it!!!
Rating: Summary: Shattering Glass Review: Shattering Glass Reading the book Shattering Glass opened my mind to a new level, It made me see that no one is perfect and that you cant always trust the ones you think you can. Maybe not even your best friends but the ones you least expect. Shattering Glass is a great book of the real world. As the pages of the book wined down, you really get the feelings that Simon Glass feels. The feelings of not fitting in, being over weight, loneliness, and heatache. As the popular kids take him under their wings, he gets a taste of a new life. Soon he becomes popular but things get a new twist, a bad twist. All you have to do is read to book to realize how real it is.
Rating: Summary: Darkly Fascinating! Review: Taking a common story and twisting and darkening it so much that it becomes an unrecognizable pleasure. The unique stylings of this story bring to life the cryptic thoughts and actions of it's characters making you hate, root for, and pity each one all in the same sentence. That takes gritty and very concise writing from someone who's seen the cunningly brutal manipulations that our youth seek. As you watch the boys guide Simon through his metamorphis from reject to ruler the chills come almost as fast as you can turn the pages. Five stars to the story that makes you take another look at your seemingly sweet children!
