Rating: Summary: So sad!!! Review: What a terribly sad tale of the downfall of such a beautiful young girl! The story demonstrates how parents' behavior can affect children. Maybe if Sam's mother had gone into therapy herself, the book would have had a different outcome. Throughout the book, you can see Sam's demise and eventual downfall but you want to hope that one of her friends gets through to her. The author, who obviously knows firsthand, shows all of the dangers that await young women and how they can be taken advantage of by others just by playing their emotions. A great cautionary tale for all!
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing... Review: This book was recommended to me because I enjoyed reading SMACK by Burgess. Unfortuanately, there is a huge difference in the writing style between the two books. Where SMACK showed a realistic scenario and various points of view... BEAUTY QUEEN is told in a diary format. The narrative is supposed to be that of a nineteen-year-old, but the writing sounds much younger and immature. Since I am a teacher, I let my fifteen-year-old daughter read this book in order to get an opinion of a younger reader. We both discussed the "plot" and resolution... and found ourselves confused at the recommendation that I had received. Glovach addresses the reader on the back of the book. She said that the book was based on true life experience, and that she even went as far to contact her "old dealer" to take ten hits... "just to get into the mood of the book."
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: This is probably the most real book I've read for a long time. All of my friends who read it loved it! It made me cry, plus my friends. I would recommened it to all teenage girls.
Rating: Summary: It Made My Cry Review: This book made me cry it showed a lot of emotions and I read it in less then a day! Its a great book and will teach someone a lot if you have the same type of problems as she did! I recommend it to any teenager going through problems and want to learn a life lesson.. It wasn't one of my favoirte books, but it was well written and very real!
Rating: Summary: Beauty Mess-up Review: It was a great book, and I really got into it. I finished it the same day I borrowed it from the library and that's odd because I don't like reading. The book is honest, it's not about some beautiful girl with a perfect life, the story really opens your eyes and you become fond of Sam (main charactar). It's written in diary form and if you're not a fan of that writing, you WILL be surprised, Linda Glovach is a great author. Read it.
Rating: Summary: You won't want to put this book down. Review: 19-year old Sam lives with her mom and her mom's boyfriend. Sam's mom is an acoholic and her moms boyfriend is aways making sexual passes at her. She gets sick of living there so she moves. Once Sam gets her own apartment, she decides she should get a better job so she becomes at topless dancer. She is very scared to go on stage so one of her co-workers shoots her up with heroin and she starts feeling good about herself. She becomes addicted to it and uses it every time she's scared or when she feels bad about herself which is a lot. She falls in love with a police officer but there is something suspicious about him. She doesn't relize what she's doing to herself and it's very sad. This book is addictive just like the drug. As you read what happens to her through the book you will feel her pain. You have to know what happens to her, and what choices she makes so you have to keep reading. Once you see what she's doing to herself you will never want to try the drug. This is one of the best books Iv'e read and I recomend every teen should read it. You will get a glimse of what mostly happens if you make her decision.
Rating: Summary: Sam's journal is the most personal thing you can read. Review: It's given me another perspective on drugs and how you live for the next fix. I've never read anything more dramatic and sad like this.I gave it four stars because I wanted to know more about Blaine Johnson. It seemed to me that he was more than a corrupt cop and a sweet man. I felt that there was more about him than that. But otherwise I enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: This book will teach you never to start... Review: This book is one of the best books I've read in a while. It's one of those books that once you start reading you absolutely can't stop. I fell asleep reading this book many times because I alwasy wanted to know what was going to happen next because it always had you one the edge. I would recommend this book to anyone thatwas willing to read about a girl names Samantha who comes from a bad home life and tries to find a job to express herself and make her feel good about herself at the same time. Her and her friend go to find a job at a topless bar to make some fast easy cash and they wind up getting the jobs because they are both very pretty girls and Sam gets the job as a dancer and her friend takes a job as a bartender. When it's Sam's first night on the job she doesn't feel too god about herself but one of her co-workers shot her up with some heroin and it made her felt like she always wanted to feel, good about herself. So she of course got very hooked on it and meets many guys that become very good friends but one she feels like she falls in love with him and she thinks he feels the same way about her. So they see each other for a while and well you'll figure out the rest when you read the book because it would be a waste to pass this book up. Please don't read the other reviews where they scored this book really low because in my opinion I think anyone would like it.
Rating: Summary: Dopey Review: NOTHING in this slim book rings true. The main character is like something from Melrose Place. She is supposed to be 19 years old, but writes/talks like a 12 year old Valley Girl. Very silly and a complete waste of time.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the price of the book Review: I was very disappointed in this book after seeing the graphic cover shot and the enticing storyline. This girl gurgled down the tubes in THREE months - going from a complete innocent working as a waitress to a mobster's moll, smack shooting, bony-hipped, strutting stripper to an angst filled death. Uh....I *don't* think so!!! If the author was a heroin addict as she says, then she should certainly know better than to publish this dramatic skimpy piece of trash. Puh-leeze!
