Summary: Current Law Student
Review: I read this entire book before I began law school, and I can honestly say that I wasn't really surpised by anything they threw at me here! Although the work-load is tremendous, as this book warns, I didn't feel like I went in to any of my classes cold. I followed most of the advice in this book very closely, while many of my classmates were fumbling to find a study and outlining method that worked for them. Now that I received my grades, I can honestly say that it paid off! I highly recommend this book to anyone considering going to law school.

Summary: Wake-Up Call
Review: Wow! This book really hit home for me. I was the unprepared, overconfident and cocky 1L at the start of my first semester of law school in 2001. Needless to say, after only 3 days of orientation, my confidence was exhausted and panic set in. I had no clue of what I was doing, or even why I was in law school in the first place. After weighing my options and having a heart-to-heart with the Dean of Admissions, I decided to defer my enrollment until 2002. This has been one of the best decisions of my life.

After reading Mr. Miller's book, I have come to the realization that law school is a total COMMITMENT; it's not a try; it's not a "taste"; and it will be very unforgiving to those who don't fully prepare themselves for its intellectual rigors. Sure, you can go to law school and not put any real effort or thought into what you are actually preparing yourself for. And if you're lucky, because that may be all that you have to count on, you will even graduate. However, what you will not have done is fully realize your intellectual potential. And when you hit the real world of stiff job competition, which is already overflowing with lawyers just like you, your opportunity to differentiate yourself from the masses will have slipped away.

Mr. Miller meticulously maps out a proven game plan for success. And if you follow his and the mentor's advice, which, by the way, often applies to any goal you set, your success in law school will eventually come to fruition. And you will have learned one of the most important lessons in life. That true success is not gained from a piece of parchment; rather, true success is only gained from within yourself.

My advice is to read this book and find a real reason to commit 3 years of your life to the law. And if you can, then show the world what it has been waiting for and set your course. Otherwise, to use the age-old cliche, "you'll be up a creek without a paddle"! Best wishes.

Summary: Not that useful
Review: I bought this book over Thanksgiving break my first semester of law school. The book really scared me, saying you're basically sunk without doing outlines all semester long. I think the book overstates the case, and can create even more stress for 1L's. Some of the advise, such as not reading in order to catch up on outlining, is, counterproductive, and, I believe, almost irresponsible. Most exams emphasized what was taught near the end of the semester. In short, this book is good to give a general overview of the law-school culture, but I think its advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

Summary: Not really useful for most students
Review: This book will be useful mostly for students who attend schools like Harvard, Yale, etc. Much of the advice is geared towards those students. I didn't find much that was relevant to my situation (a student at a Midwestern law school).

It gives good advice; the problem is that the advice is given to a very select group of students.

Summary: I'm impressed
Review: I've been buying countless "So You're Going to Law School" -type books and was relieved with my choice of this one. Miller offers you practical, UP-TO-DATE advice as well as demystifying the whole law school experience. It was easy to read, amusing, candid and chock full of information any incoming law student will want to know. I also appreciated the group effort on authoring this book, with frequent excerpts from "mentors" that had a wide range of experiences and attitudes regarding their law degree. Although most of those who contributed to the book went to law schools I could only dream of getting into, I feel it's universal in it's advice. And they don't sugar-coat it either, this book leaves you assured, motivated and prepared for what you are about to face.

Summary: GREAT BOOK!!
Review: Being only a freshman in college, even I thought that this book served as a useful tool in helping my decision to be a future lawyer. Now I know what to expect! I am glad that Miller wrote this book, it was easy to understand and I couldn't put it down!

Summary: Read it or Else... A Parent's Reaction
Review: My daughter did everything right to get into a top 10 law school...at least we and she thought so......invited into the prestigious undergraduate Honors College at a top 10 Public University...top 2% of 50,000 students...traveled abroad twice...EXCEPT, we did not read Mr. Miller's Book until After the Law App process...now we collectively hold our breath, because of a strategic error. A private mentor might save applicants and their parents a lot of headaches...and this is a close as you'll get to a private FOR HIRE mentor...we know! Concerned Parents and applicants Must Read it as soon as there is a glimmer of an interest in : The Law and a top Law School Experience. Mr. Miller is truly at the top of his game having lived throught the process RECENTLY...and since he had close friends make strategic errors, including friends who were studying at Universities ranked in the top 5 for undergrad, he can speak closely to the 'dark side' of a mistake. There are many opportunities which are matched by equally obnoxious and unfair pratfalls within the HEIRARCHY of Law Scools Pay close attention to this in the book. Miller does a fine job of outling options...so that the students have an increased chance of getting into their top 'schools of choice' and knowing what that really means!! WE are finding out the hard way that everything in here is current, accurate, and he does not sugarcoat the reality of getting into 'THE BIG TOP' and what it will be like 'in the tent'.. Parents should read this so you are on the same page as your graduate. This may be the last and most influential thing you do for and with them. It may help you understand why your new 'star graduate' may even need some time off before law school...Remember...a top law student is not a 'Machine' and the Top Law Schools will prove it...Be sure its not at your mutual expense.. BUY The Book! READ The Book! BELIEVE The Book.!!!

Summary: Good Resource - definitely recommended
Review: I'm in my first year and I can honestly say that all the advice in this book seems to be right on - there may be a few things that work for some and not for others - book-briefing, for example, doesn't work so well for me, but all the other advice seems sound. Read this instead of One L or Paper Chase.

Summary: Necessary
Review: I am leaving my current career as an airline's captain and will be attending law school next spring. Miller's book was able to answer all the questions I had about the law school experience and served as a reference tool as I travelled along the school addmissions process. At one point I called the author for some information, that I had forgotten was already covered in the book, and he was gracious enough to refer me to the exact page and included an invitation to "call me" at any time in the future with any
school questions. And he didn't bill me for the time!
