Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: A nice first novel Review: This was pretty impressive for a 13 year old. As a 25-year-old who has been trying to get published since 13, I admit to some jealousy! I was impressed with the way the author took the myths about vampires and changed them all--she didn't just disregard them the way another young author might; she actually took the time to explain them and why they weren't true. The format of the book, alternating between the present struggle with Aubrey and her past, was nice. It flowed well, and gave an intimate picture of Risika and her family. Alexander's fate was handled well, and there was some nice foreshadowing. Aubrey is a classic bully, and I did wonder why she persisted in believing for 300 years that she HAD to fear him, but the building conflict was interesting to read. One problem I had with the book, which kind of flawed everything for me, was why her mysterious visitor waited 300 years to get in touch with her, when that person should have been able to contact her at any time since her transformation. I haven't read Amelia's other books, though (have Demon in My View checked out for my next read) and perhaps that's a question that will be answered later. I read this book in a couple of hours, and enjoyed it. I'm not going to go out and buy it, and probably won't reread it, but I will read the author's other books. I think she's a promising voice in YA fiction, and I'd love to see her mature into writing adult fiction as she gets older. I'm not dissing YA fiction, because I'm technically a real adult but still love reading YA; I just look forward to seeing her handle darker themes in a longer format.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The author was only 13 when she wrote this! Review: This book was really cool. I normally don't read stuff with vampires, but this book was very good. My favorite parts were the ones that took place in the 1600s. The coolest thing is that Amelia Atwater Rhodes was only 13 when she wrote this!
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good, but not Brilliant Review: When I started reading In the Forests of the Night,I was expecting alot more than what I got. There wasn't much storyline and I did get a bit bored towards the end.Though saying that, parts of the book were enjoyable and I would read it again.I love books about vampires and so on,but I didn't love this one.I know Amelia Atwater Rhodes can write better,as I have read another of her books.Maybe as this was her first book, she just needed a bit more practise, and inspiration.Read it and see what you think of it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A book in a million Review: Reading more than forty books a month means that few books stay in my memory for very long - this book has stayed with me since I read over a year ago. I can not believe how well Atwater-Rhodes brings her characters to life. Risika is an incredible character who shows both strength and weakness - sometimes in the same moment. The other thing about this book that I really loved was the fact that Atwater-Rhodes has taken vampire lore and made it hre own. If you are hoping for a BUffy the Vampire Slayer or Anne Rice, then you are going to have to look somewhere else. The vampires in this book, and the others that follow, are very human. The only thing that these books have in common with BTVS is that there are witches who slay the vampires. This book is not to be missed. The only complaint is that this book was gone to fast (it's quite short). You will find yourself hating and loving Risika by turn.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Absolutly a Must Read! Review: Her books are a really quick read, but once you get started, you want more! Her characters are so real and she describes them so you can see them and hear them speak. I really hope to see more of her work.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: amazing Review: this is a remarkable book. it is about a vampire named Risika, and her archrival, Aubrey. they fight for power thoughout the book, and when aubrey hits one of risika's soft spots, she gets fed up and goes to avenge her friend and brother. this book has a surprising twist, and you can pick it up a week after you finish it and read it again because it is so good. i reccomend this book for anyone who loves mythological creatures.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Impressive Writing Skills Review: Written at the tender age of 13, this book shows that Amelia Atwater Rhodes is sure to stay around for a long, long time. Her descriptions of characters and scenes show that she is determined to be a spectacular author, and it shows in her first book "In The Forests Of The Night." Rachel is a young girl living in the 1600's, when she is confronted by Ather and Aubrey. A witch and a vampire. Aubrey casts Rachel under his spell, and now she is known as Risika. A vampire as well. The book follows Risika's life as she battles Aubrey for taking the lives of her brother Alexander, and her beloved tiger Tora, and as she tries to fight her hunger for blood. This is an excellent book, and I recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with vampires, witches, or paranormal phenomena.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: impressive. . . Review: The book had amazing descriptions and ideas. I was a little confused at where the book was going. To me it didn't seem like there was a definitive plot line. The story line flowed well but I wasn't sure exactly whether this was a story about Rifika's existance and how she came to be or a story about her conflict with Aubrey. (I honestly think it was both) GREAT job, Amelia. If you as good a writer as you are now, I can't wait to see some of your later books. If you liked this book definately check out Demon In My View.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: A mediocre book with mediocre feeling... Review: If anything, the only thing that this book lacked was emotion. You have the tortured heroine, the crafty (and slightly alluring) villian, the tearing of the main character's very being... But no substance. Miss Rhodes does show promise, but so far all I'm seeing is potential. The follow up to 'In the Forests of the Night', 'Demon in My View' is much better, I'd say. In the time between the two books she really honed her skills and came out with a suprisingly well done book. In this book, the characters seem forced and stereotypical, arrogant and dull. Don't get me wrong, I'd still say it was worth a read, but allow yourself the dissapointment only once.
