Summary: What a book!
Review: This was a great + awsome book. I first read this book for a book report at school and I read it in a day. I thought Lawrence Yep wrote Shimmer better than any author I've read whos wrote a dragon book. Civet wasn't a bad guy in my eyes, but a lost person. If you listen to her story closly, you could see she was a good person. Thorn was a strong boy. So read this book if you haven't.

Summary: The clash of fantasy
Review: This was a great book. Not one of the best I have read but a good book all together. It is about a Dragon who has had praticlly her whole life taken from her. A demon named Civet has trapped her home in a jewel and now shimmer wants it back. On her journey she meets a boy who is just like her, an outcast left alone by his parents. They end up bonding and Thorn joins her on her quest. Civet has made friends with a powerful wizard. The wizard chases Shimmer through most of the book. At the end of the book, Shimmer defeats Civet, regains the jewel, and her world and life comes back to her. I would suggest this to any fantasy fan.

Summary: A little bland especially if you are Chinese.
Review: Thorn is like any other fantasy hero. Shimmer is not a Chinese name. Chinese dragons have no wings, and use magic to fly. Their pearls are in their mouth. Monkey King's master was not born old, nor was he called the Old Boy. The plot could have been expanded on, and given depth. Instead, we get the bare bones. IF you are looking for a slightly above average book, with typical characters and boring writing style and ruined plot from work/care malnutrition...pick this up. If you are looking for a deep book that lets you relate to the characters and keeps itself from being boring, pick up Child of the Owl, Thief of Hearts, and Dragonwings. I'm off to get Dragonwings....and off to ditch this.

Summary: A little bland, especially if you're Chinese...
Review: Whenever I read Yep, I think, yep, this is sure good! But I didn't really like Thorn- for one thing, most human heroes would have done what he did-and the Chinese lore had some mistakes-for one thing, Chinese dragons use magic to fly, not wings!(They don't have wings, either.) And their pearls are in their mouths...and they can turn into clouds to rain water...and Shimmer doesn't sound like a Chinese name. And Monkey King's master was not born old! Nor was he called the Old Boy. IF you are looking for a book that's just a little above average, that's slightly bland, with average characters, average boring writing style and great plot ruined by not enough hmmmmm, work, care, then this is it. If you are looking for a book that is deep, thoughtful, and relates to you and manages to be an engrossing story, too, then check out Dragonwings, Child of the Owl, and Thief of Hearts. Not this.

Summary: A good first impressing by Laurance Yep
Review: Yep is correct! Laurance Yep is an exectional author. I love books of the Fantasy genre especisally one's that include dragons, magic, and talking animals and beasts. Old Boy and the Keeper seem like they are related some how. I think Old Boy is really the Keeper , but when Shimmer cast a transfiguration spell it says she says a spell and makes a symbol. What does the symbol look like , what are the words to the spell? But when it comes to all and all the books a masterpiece that no one could doubt.
