Rating: Summary: Outstanding book Review: The Secret Garden is about a young, spoiled girl named Mary that ends up alone. The lady who takes care of Mary and a lot of their servants die from cholera. Now Mary is left alone and has to move from India to England. This book is very interesting and emotional and I recommend it to anyone 12 and older. The author really makes you feel what Mary feels.
Rating: Summary: The Secret Garden Review: The reason I choose this book is because of the cover of the book. I think the cover was illustrated really nice. I thought that this book would be interesting. The main character in this book was mitress Mary. Mary was the most disagreeable child ever seen. She had a thin little face, a thin little thin body, her was yellow because she was born in India, and she was ugly. Ithougt that this book is great because Mary found the key to the gareden and the garden which made it more interesing.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read! Review: The Secret Garden By: Deborah Hautzig Have you ever thought that your life could change? Mary's life changed a lot in this book. She was born in India but her parents died when she was ten years old. She was sent to England to live with her uncle. She heard about a locked garden that was her uncle's wife's. Her uncle locked it when his wife died. Do you think she can find the key to the garden? I liked this book because it has mystery in it. Mary was a really interesting character because she was determined to find the key. All of this combined made the story great to read. The author was trying to tell us that we have to be happy, there is no reason to be sad. She was also trying to entertain us so that we could be happy.
Rating: Summary: Best Book of the Year! Review: I would just like to say that I enjoyed this book throughout the time I was reading it! At the end of every chapter she had some sentence that made me wonder what was going to happen next; that made me want to read more and more until my eyes were going to pop out of my head! I thought Colin was surely going to die because he had no self-confidence. I thought it was very sad that his father hated him so, just because his wife died when she was giving birth to Colin. Back then I'm sure they had less ways to help ladies give birth and have both the mother and the baby stay alive. On to the other male main character, Dickon! He was my favorite character in the whole book because he could talk to robins in their own language as well as other animals. He could also "charm" the animals. I loved the red robin. Most people would think after reading this book that he wasn't a main character, but I think he was. He did some very important things to keep the story rolling. For instance, when he lead Mary outside and helped her find the lost key to the lost garden. I personally think Mary was kind of like me at my old school, that I didn't really trust people. Even though I didn't live in Africa and have my own maids dress me! But when I meet Jenny, she showed me in her own way that she could be trusted and then I started making new friends just like Mary had done. So, I do hope more people would read this amazing book in the future! (And I hope I will get an "A" just kidding)
Rating: Summary: A children's book for all ages Review: It was right there on my shelf. I could have read it anytime, but it looked childish and boring. However, recently, when I discovered the joy of reading, I picked up Burnett's The Secret Garden and was blown away by how enjoyable a children's book can be. This book follows the life of Mary, a spoiled little orphan girl who undergoes a remarkable transformation when living at her uncle's estate in Yorkshire. Mary learns that there are other people in the world who are needy, such as her cousin Colin, and learns to accept them. I found myself thoroughly enjoying Burnett's book, reading it whenever I got the chance. I loved the heartwarming story about how Mary finds another person just like herself, and helps him overcome his illness and apathy towards life. This well-written masterpiece should be required reading for young children and book-loving adults should also consider it. Don't be afraid! You'll love it!
Rating: Summary: The Secret Garden Review: Once I saw my friend reading this book, and of course I've heard of it before. Yet, I never really completed it until now. Before I thought it was boring, but hearing a friend speak so highly of it made me interested. Therefore, I bought a copy of it, and started reading. I like this book because it feels like the writer really expressed her emotions through this book. There were sometimes even tears in my eyes while reading it. I figured that sometimes people have feelings that you can't hide, which I saw in Colin. This boy who everybody thought would die, since he could not use his legs. And had an "unhealthy" back. This book was about Mistress Mary, who was always really cross. She went to her Uncle's house, and stayed there for a while. She found out that there was a Secret Garden somewhere, and pretty soon she found it. Also, she found her cousin, whom she has never seen before, and they grow to be best of friends. Colin tells Mary his lifestory, and this is the only person Colin really opens up to, because he's always very cross with the servants and doctors who check up on him. But, to find out more of the story, you're just going to have to read it!
Rating: Summary: The Secret Garden Review: This book was about a girl that goes to live with her uncle and makes new friends with the people that live there and finds out information about a secret garden that has been locked up for a long time. Because she is a very curious girl, she goes and tries to find the garden with the help of her friends. She finds the garden and fixes it up by growing new plants and flowers. She tries to make her uncle feel better by fixing up the garden. Her uncle, after seeing the fixed garden, thinks of the good times he had in the garden with his wife when she was alive and starts to get less strict and stressful and enjoys life. I enjoyed this book very much because I really got into the story as I was reading and actually felt like one of the characters as the story was going on. It felt like I jumped from this world to the book and actually lived it. I like the fact that the author was very descriptive. I enjoy reading books that capture my attention and this book really did. My favorite part in this book was when the main character in the story tried to fix the garden for her uncle and how the author was so descriptive about how the plants and flowers just came alive. The picture was so clear and descriptive in my mind. I really enjoy it when an author just has fun writing a book, and it comes out to be really good because they were putting their heart into it. I'd say that Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote really good books such as A Little Princess and Little Women. She knows how to express her feelings and is an individual at writing.
Rating: Summary: The Secret Garden Review: The Secret Garden is one of the best books I have read. I think a lot of people would like this book but they shouldn't be younger than ten years old due to words they might not know. Also there are phrases in a old language called Yorkshire. I loved this book because it is the kind of book where a person makes a good change in their life for the first time.
Rating: Summary: Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden Review: Like most classics of children's literature, "The Secret Garden: deals with very human emotions: love, apathy, fear, trust. The author has woven a very real tale about people that change due to their interactions with each other. The central character, Mary, undergoes a transformation that she, in turn, causes her cousin to do, likewise. Both children begin to see that the world is not centered on them and they hold their own "keys" to unlocking the wonders of life. This growth is an essential element in the story. Even the supporting characters play an important part in the telling of the story. Mrs. Medlock is comparable to all the servants that Mary has had in the past - those that just did as they were told. Martha's friendliness was instrumental in the charges in Mary's personality. Dickon sparked in Mary her first "crush." Uncle Archibald represented Mary's distant parents. The story effectively transports the reader to the dark English moors with its constantly rainy days. The immensity of Misselthwaite Manor is described in great detail. Language of the characters ranged from the learned diction of Mary and her uncle to the "common" tongue of Martha, Ben, and Dickon. It is quite amusing to read the different accents and phrasings. The highlight of the story is when Colin's ability to walk is revealed to his father. This very emotional event is handled with compassion and delicacy. The reader can visualize the expression on the father's face as he sees his son stand for the first time. The true "secret" of the garden is not in the foliage that grows within; it is that one's life can blossom if there is caring and faith to help it grow.
