Review: The Secret Garden

Have you ever discovered a place that has bee locked up for a long time? If so, then you can relate to The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Mary Lennox, the protagonist, moves from India to Misselthwaite, England because her parents die of cholera. She lives with her cousin Colin Craven, who thinks he's a cripple and believes he is never going to walk. Mary tries to convince him that he's not a cripple. The children meet Dickon, a local boy who they call the animal charmer. Together they find a magical world inside a garden.

Mary, Dickon, and Colin find the garden left alone and locked. They find a key with the help of Robin and then start to garden without anyone knowing it. Mary and Colin are very frail like a toothpick, but then they grow because the fresh air makes them well. Dickon is a teacher because he shows them how to garden.

Then, on a rainy day, Mary and Colin go into rooms in the house that are locked up and they learn about their ancestors. In Colin's room Mary sees a portrait hidden under a tarpaulin, she opens it and sees picture of Colin's Mother (Mrs. Craven). Mary asks Colin why it is covered and he tells her that he doesn't want to see her because she reminds him of his Father and how he is mad at him because he will be a hunchback. Finally, Mary and Colin learn to overcome their tantrums and the fears of never seeing their parents again. When the children are in the garden, they were caught by one of the gardeners, however he said that he wouldn't tell because he himself had been inside the garden.

A sour nine year old, Mistress Mary, has just moved to her uncle's mansion in a far lonely place. She has moved here because Mary made a nasty wish that her parents and maids would die, and it came true! Now, Mary is lonly and unwanted by everyone. Mary's uncle is a widower who has one son named Colin.
Soon, Mary becomes used to this place and explores all of the gardens. She has an Irish friend named Deacon. Deacon and Mary explore all of the gardens. Does Mary, Deacon, and Colin find the magic garden that their aunt had locked up? Find out what happens to Mary, Deacon, a krippled boy Colin, Mary's mysterious uncle, and the magic garden. ... I think this book was a real page turner. I could not put this exciting book down. I highly recommend this book. It is a classic of all times! I rate this book #1 of all the books I have read. I also recommend the movie.

Review: This book is full of mysteries. As mary lenox, an orphaned, stubborn, and impolite 10 year old girl, goes to her uncles manor, she meets martha. martha is her "maid" who introduces mary to a new way of thinking and life. she is captured by the thought of a mysterious garden. as she finds the door and the key, she needs some assistance helping the garden grow, and a martha's brother, dickon, a animal charmer and lover, is the one she turns to. much more mysteries included in this book are crying in the coridors, pictures of people all along the hallways and mary's aunt, Mrs. Craven. Where does all this fit, read the book and you will find out.

Review: The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett is about a girl, Mary Lennox, who has spent her entire life in India. When her parents encounter a strange and mysterious illness that leads to death, Mary must move to England and stay there with her uncle, whom she's never seen or met before. Strange things are going on at Misselthwait Manor, like a garden that's locked up for an unknown reason, and a strange crying sound in the middle of the night. I enjoyed this book a lot because Ms. Burnett made the characters seem real, the plot exciting, and the ordinary seem unordinary.
Francis Hodgson Burnett made the characters in The Secret Garden seem real to me because of the description. For example, this is what she has to say about Mary, first thing on the first page, right after you open the book. "When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwait Manor to live with her uncle everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow because she had been born in India and had always been ill in one way or another." Can't you just picture Mary in your head? Ms. Burnett describes all her characters so well you can see them, and are positive that you have met that person before, no matter if they are mentioned just once, or on every page.
The plot of The Secret Garden is exciting because there are lots of different things going on at once. To illustrate, Mary is trying to get into the locked garden. She's also trying to make friends with Colin, her disabled cousin, and to adjust to life in England with her uncle and no parents. If I had that many things going on in my life, it certainly wouldn't be boring!
In The Secret Garden, Ms. Burnett makes the ordinary seem unordinary in many ways. One way is that everything is seen through the eyes of a disagreeable, spoiled, ten-year-old girl. I'm not very much older than ten myself, but I don't think that wandering around in a huge old house on a rainy day is exciting, but through Mary's eyes it is. In addition to that, Ms. Burnett makes the ordinary seem unordinary by combining unusual character traits. Take Mary's uncle for example. He's a mean old man with a crooked back, and he's married. Alone, those two things are perfectly normal seen every day, but you don't expect to see those two things together when someone's being described.
An exciting plot, the unordinary turned ordinary, and very realistic characters are my favorite things about The Secret Garden. In reality, the whole book is a treasure to cherish. If you've never read this book, you really should. If you've only read it once, read The Secret Garden again and again. I know I will.

Review: I read The Secret Garden when I was in the fifth grade. The book was a combination of realistic fiction and mystery. I was always looking for clues to explain the next chapter .I was so engrossed in the book that I read 30 pages every half an hour!
The whole plot of The Secret Garden was about a girl named Mary Lennox, an orphaned, disagreeable looking, girl, who needed some action in her life. And she reached her goal. She was ten when she moved to her Uncle's house on a moor in Yorkshire. One of the housemaids, Martha, showed her around, and told Mary stories about her family that Mary enjoyed. On of Martha's brothers, Dickon, was an animal charmer and a nice, perfect boy who Mary fancyed that Mary finally met. He helped her uncover and bring to life a huge secret.This secret can not be shared with you, you'll have to find out yourself.Mean while, when Mary was sleeping at night, a childs cry woke her up. On day she investigated the noise. She found another secret on her way, a secret corrider. Will Mary find out who is screaming? If so, what should she do about it? Will Dickon and Mary succeed in bringing the secret alive?
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading exciting adventures. My opinion on The Secret Garden is that out of five stars I would give it 5 stars, because it was so fun to read, and I didn't want to stop! And those are the results of the good book The Secret Garden!

Review: AThe Secret Garden had an inspirational effect on me. Frances Hodgson Burnett was able to show you that no matter how rough life gets, you always have a single ray of hope. Through realistic characters, she was able to show the value of life. Each character was so detailed and developed it was as if you were watching it all happen. Whether you believe in magic or not, it feels as if something is with you while you are reading. This story has been made into a movie. However, the book has a warmer nature as opposed to the movie.
Mary was an unloved unwanted child with everything she could ever want except for a family. Due to the fact that her mother didn't want her around, her nanny would do anything for her to keep her happy. After her mother's death the only person left to keep her was her uncle in England. Coming from India, the people in England didn't expect Mary to be so picky. She finds that in order to stay amused she must overcome her selfish nature and do things on her own. This leads her to find her cousin, Colin. In time, they both learn to appreciate life and the only way to make it is to stop worrying and start believing. Mr. Craven, Mary's uncle, locked up parts of the manor and a special garden after his wife's death 10 years earlier. So, when it is found it is to be kept a secret between six new friends, until it can be revealed to Colin's father, which could or could not happen.
I would rate this book a 4 because, there were s things I didn't agree with. Some of the less important characters were too developed and it is a long story. I did like that it gave me a warm feeling, as if anything is possible. I'm still thinking about how I can change someone's day the same way they did for each other. The only way to enjoy the miracle is to read it yourself.

Mary Lennox is a little girl who is stubborn and not very pretty. Everyone hates her and she hates everyone. Mary lives with her father, who is an army captain and her beautiful mother. They hire servants to look after Mary because they think she is ugly. One day, Mary's parents catch a deadly disease and they die. Mary is sent to live with her uncle's huge estate. Mary's curiosity leads her to a secret garden that belongs to her uncle's wife. She hears sounds from the garden and finds the key to it. Soon, she is about to uncover a mystery and meet many interesting new people...

I liked this book because I can relate to some of it. Sometimes I feel ignored like Mary. I also act stubborn like her. Another thing I like is the dialogue. It is clear to understand and it also tells a lot about the character saying it. The dialogue is not plain and it has so expression and emotion in it so you could tell which character is saying it. "'A secret,' he said. 'What do you mean? Tell me.'" This quote shows a little of how the dialogue has some emotion in it.

A thing I don't like in this book is the storyline. It is about a girl that finds a garden and meets some people. When I heard about the book, I thought it would be really boring. It was pretty good, but still it would have been much better if some more exciting things happened. I enjoy books better when suddenly something happens that you could have never expected without reading the book. I also don't like how there are some big words that I never heard of, and these words delayed the time it took to read book. "'I knew he'd come,' said Martha exultantly. 'How does tha' like him?'" I had to look up the word "exultantly" before I could actually understand that part.

My favorite part of the book is the close to the ending. It is when Colin gets so angry and ferocious because he is insulted that he gathers his strength and stands up on his feet. Soon, after thing miracle, Colin starts getting much better. I like this because it shows how something that seems hopeless and pointless can actually change and a miracle can happen.

Review: Who won't like this book? Well... I know that some parents these days feel it is a boring book which requires to much of an attention span. But children need and benefit from classics like this which require thought and which have a profound and telling message. It is a must read book for any family who values the classics and who feels that children need a balance of computer, sports and quality reading material.

Set in Misselthwaite Manor on the Yorkshire moors, Mary Lennox who has been orphaned arrives from India at her uncle Mr. Archibald Craven's home where she discovers a cousin Colin who is sickly and spoiled. ALmost as much as she is. In time Mary discovers that her cousin simply needs some encouragement and the once spoiled girl becomes a secret cheer leader of sorts and they set out to get Colin walking. One of the characters I adored so much was the gardener,who knows that the two have discovered the secret garden that Colins mother had adored and tended so well, which has become overgrown and like the two young children, simply needs some tender loving and consistent care. The children are very careful because they get Colin ouside using the wheelchair since they want to use the garden as a tool for also helping Colins physical therapy. In a few months not only is Colin able to walk and get about but the garden is flourishing which as the story continues will become the healing tool for the uncle (Mr. Archibald Craven)who has been heartbroken and aloof since his wifes death. Like the Little Princess this book deals with death, loneliness and deep subjects.

Review: I liked the book alot because it had alot of excitment and talked about Mary finding a room that was her aun'ts room. I liked the part where she found a key that opened the gate to the secret garden.

Review: I have always liked gardens especially ones with tomatos, cucumbers, potatos, and squash. So when I heard about this book, I knew I needed it and I wasn't disappointed.

While I felt silly reading it reminded me of my childhood and I have since recommended to my friends, Trotsky and Stalin who both agree that Gardens are wonderful especially when they have a large quantity of fresh legumes.
