Rating: Summary: An Amazing Book Review: Sarah Dessen is one of the best voices of our time. I've had contact with her on two occasions, and she is a gracious and kind person. Her writing is poetic and beautiful, but more imporantly, accurate. I have been reading YA fiction for years, searching for the perfect book. This one book captures the nuances of best friendships, of mother-daughter and father-daughter relationships and how they change, the question of sex, and the openness of life and choices with wit, wisdom, and trust. Ms. Dessen knows how the teenage mind works. She provides us our lives plus a little more drama. This book makes me laugh, cry, and want to hug those I love just a little tighter next time. I shan't summarize the plot, I just want to affirm that without preaching or condoning, Sarah Dessen has given a gift of a book, full of realism and humor but not without a gentle touch.
Rating: Summary: My Review (Someone Like You) Review: I read the book Someone Like You in just one day! Sarah Dessen has written two books, this being her second. I found it quite exciting although its more of a girls novel then a guys.Even though some guys might like it. My most favorite part of the book was when Halley (main character) realizes the person she once was and the person she has becomeare exstreamly different. This book has alot to do with trust, faith, and responsablity! Not only that but the book has adventure and daringness for two young girls to over come their problems.I hope you read the book and find it as interesting as I did....
Rating: Summary: Something We All Can Relate To Review: Someone Like You is a heart-filled story of true life events that happen to teenagers all over the world.Sarah Dessen is sending a message through a unique blend of the plot and characters. Dessen takes two teenage girls who are completely different and evolves their growing trust through the day-to-day events that take place. She begins with a friendship and it builds with new experiences. The main conflict is the fact that Halley and Scarlett deal with their parents, boys, high school, jobs, and life's situations such as their virginity, death and teenage pregnancies. Halley is the shadow of Scarlett and has very low self-esteem. By meeting more people and being with her new crush, Macon, she begins to open up and is no longer known as Scarlett's friend, but just known as Halley. Scarlett deals with secrets and the trust of her freind with each problem in her life. This story is so real that the characters seem to give an effect all their own. "Scarlett was a redhead but not with an orangy, carrot-top kind of way. Her color was more auburn, deep and red mixed with browns that made her green eyes almost luminous, her skin was pale, with masses of freckles for the first few years. I knew her; as we grew older, they faded into a sprinkling across her nose, as if they'd been scattered there by hand. She was an inch and three-quarters taller than me, her feet a size larger, and she had a scar on her stomach that looked like a mouth smiling from where she'd gotten her appendix taken out. She was beautiful in all the unconcious, accidental ways that I wasn't and I was jealous more than I'd ever have admitted. To me, Scarlett was foreign and exotic." I recommend this book to any reader with the need for a good picture in their minds, and for the need of a modern story with detailed events for detailed characters. The five stars is nothing compared to this story and the author's thought and creativity.
Rating: Summary: "The world is a bad, awful place to be wtihout a friend" Review: When her friend Scarlett find out she is pregnant right after the baby's fther died, Halley, whose life is also taking several turns, finds it hard to be a good friend, but at the end proves to be the best friend Scarkett could have ever had. This is a great book about friendship, love, and it expalins what being a teenager is all about.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book Ever!! Review: I read this book in one day! I could not put it down. It is just about two best friends and boyfriends and everything in a normal teenage life! It is funny and sad, but very happy too! I also recommend Sarah Dessens other three books. They were all awesome too! I told all of my friends about the books and they love them too! don't pass these up!
Rating: Summary: The BEST Book I've EVER Read!!!!! Review: First, I have to say this is my all time favorite book. I think I've read it about four times in about a day each time. This story line just never gets old. The friendship Halley and Scarlett have is amazing! The book shows the struggle they go through with Scarlett getting pregnant and Halley's struggle to have a relationship with a boy her parents less than approve of. I won't give away the ending and all the greatness of this book, but if you read this you'll see if very soon because this book is so fun and easy to read. Happy reading!!!
Rating: Summary: When Best Friends Need Each Other the Most... Review: This is a touching story about best friends needing each other. Sixteen-year-old Halley goes through 11th grade with her best friend, Scarlett, whose boyfriend, Michael, died in a motorcycle accident and is carrying his baby. Halley then meets Macon, a dangerous, wild boy who was Michael's best friend. They have a serious relationship and later Halley starts to feel pressured by him. This book, in my opinion, is Dessen's best novel so far.
Rating: Summary: Scarlet and Halley Review: This is a book that fell from the stars and into my lap. The first read is like eating your favorite food. You keep eating and eating and when your done, you can't wait until you can eat it again. This book is about Halley and Scarlet. Halley and Scarlet are best friends, so close it's like your sisters, like you live parrelel lives. I know the feeling-I too have a best friend, a Scarlet, someone you believe you can't live without. Scarlet has always been the popular, the bright star in everyone's life, and Halley has been Scarlet's Friend Halley. But Halley doesn't mind. Halley loves Scarlet more than anyone in the world-and the feeling is mutual. Then, Halley is sent away to camp and leaves Scarlet with Scarlet's summer boyfriend, Michael, who has been giving Scarlet kiwi fruits and I Love Yous all summer. Then, one night, Halley is awakened by the camp owner, and has a phone call from Scarlet. Scarlet's love of her life, Micheal, is dead. Halley flies home, and like any good friend, throws her arms around Scarlet and lets Scarlet cry. Not long after, Halley meets Macon, Michael's best friend, and the two start dating. Macon is as mysterious and magical as Micheal was, leaving Halley Jolly Ranchers and Hershey's Kisses insteadof kiwi fruits. Suddenly, Scarlet discovers she's pregnant, and for the first time, something is bigger than Halley and Scarlet. Now it's Halley, Scarlet, and someone else. Someone who hasn't become anything yet, but will and will grow and love. Halley and Scarlet begin on their friendship quest to keep the baby. And, on the other hand, Macon starts pressuring Halley. In the end, Halley learns what she is, and what Scarlet is, and what they'll always be: best friends. This book is a little peice of magic that every girl who's ever had a best friend, a soul twin, someone who knows everything your thinking, should read this. Heart-breaking and humerous, this little star is going to be yours and you best friend's best friend...and you'll want to read it over and over, and you'll always feel that special shiver as you read the last line, cause really...that's what's life is all about: who you are and the magic you can make.
