Summary: I know how it feels!
Review: If you really want to read a better than great book than read "Someone like you." I know how it feels to try and help somebody out, but it only comes back at you later on. "Someone Like You" really tells the life of a teenage mother. Not everything in life comes easy. Once you read this book you won't have to think twice about going to a party or what to do when your parents are out of town. It's not worth risking your parents trust for your night out with a guy. No guy is worth the pain that may be brought to you after that night your parents went out of town. I know I'm not supposed to, I know I could get caught anytime, but I still sneak out with my boy(friend)like it's nothing. This book could change your entire life around...For better or for worse. So read "Someone Like You" and see where you mind can take you!

Unlike Scarlett, which she was popular and pretty, halley was just the quiet sidekick but then she doesnt really mind. Michael Alex Sherwood died at 8:55 P.M. on August 13th. Summary: Who Am I?
Review: Perhaps the most frustrating stage in a girl's life is that brink between childhood and adulthood where little seems to make sense and it is never easy to find firm footing in a world of acne, homework, immature boyfriends, and trendy clothes. For many girls it is a seemingly impossible task to figure out who they are, let alone to become satisfied with themselves. Fortunately, Halley and Scarlett have each other as comrades in this battle with the teenage years during which they are plagued with adult problems. Through the involvement of her characters in many issues that no teenager should have to face, Sarah Dessin reveals the importance of relationships in influencing the decisions that both Halley and Scarlett must make.
Friends are a crucial part of any teenage girl's life and Scarlett, typically a bold, strong, and independent leader, is lucky to have Halley as her best sidekick when learning that her boyfriend Michael has been killed in a motorcycle accident. Dealing with such a loss at sixteen years old is overwhelming and with Halley by her side Scarlett manages to cope. As if this blow to their already confused teenage outlook on life is not enough, their friendship is tested again when Scarlett learns that she is carrying Michael's child. Yet a best friend like Halley remains faithful and Dessin cleverly develops her characters in such a way to emphasize this vital role that Halley plays. Scarlett's mother Marion, for instance, an irresponsible, raspy-voiced woman who needs more care than she gives, calls attention to Scarlett's need for someone else to exemplify, to lean on, and to trust, especially during her weakest moments. Halley, the more timid of the two, now must reverse her role in their friendship when Scarlett, in deciding to keep her baby, acts against her mother's opinion; she learns to be the shoulder to lean on instead of doing all the leaning and she has enough guts to take on a father's role in coaching Scarlett through her pregnancy, even becoming her partner at Lamaze class and accompanying her to doctor's appointments.
Halley is not as strong as she appears, however, and her first-person narrative allows the reader to witness her mistakes as well as how she handles the different perspective that Scarlett provides in tough situations. Halley, just like any young romantic, is ecstatic when the school's intriguing mystery boy, Macon, begins to respond to her secret desire for him. Yet he is not like Halley; he is daring and seemingly under no restrictions. Thus, Halley's interaction with Macon reveals her need for Scarlett's advice and direction in the same way that Scarlett needs Halley's support. Halley, beset with anxiety over whether or not to sleep with Macon, questions Scarlett who understands the implications first-hand. "I mean, I really like him...It's just what, you know, you do," she says. In their dialogue, the reader sees her teenage naivety, uncertainness, and desire to do what is cool even though deep down she knows it may not be right. One would assume that helping a pregnant best friend through morning sickness and crabby mood swings would discourage all thoughts of having sex as a sixteen-year-old, but Halley's indecisiveness is simply a prime characteristic of her age and also reveals her need for a friend to relate to and gain feedback from.
Influencing Halley's relationship with both Scarlett and Macon, however, is the complex relationship of a mother and daughter. Halley's mother, a child therapist, knows all the right answers to handle adolescent issues yet when she applies them to her own daughter they backfire. She is the opposite of Marion, making Halley's frustration with her all the more reasonable from a teen's perspective. Seeking advice but more so just someone like herself, Halley rebels against her overprotective, inflexible mother and tries to define herself apart from authority. Yet, like most teenage girls, she is easily influenced by the boy and disregards her friend's advice. The reader witnesses the awful result of her break from her mother and best friend, but fortunately Halley soon recognizes her mistake and the fact that her strong relationships are much more significant and rich than a fleeting crush or a desire to fit in.
Throughout Someone Like You, the reader witnesses the transformation of a naïve, apprehensive, and confused teenage girl into someone who realizes that who she is depends upon her relationships with both her best friend and her mother. Although it does not come with the first try, Halley learns how to become strong when a situation demands strength as well as how to let down her defenses in order to stay connected with a mother whom she realizes will always be a part of her. She gives a fresh hope to teenage girls who can relate to her constant struggles and emotional battles for she comes to a place of solace in accepting herself as someone who is part of a relationship, someone who is needed, and someone who has something to give.

Summary: Friends and your first love
Review: Sarah Dessen's "Someone like you" is an amazing story of two best friends. Scarlett is pretty and popular while Halley is the quiet shy girl known as "Scarletts friend." Halley gets a call to come home when she hears about the tragic accident that killed Scarlett's boyfriend. Halley goes home immediately to be there and comfort Scarlett. She's there for her at the most important time, when Scarlett really needed her.
Their life goes back to normal when they go back to school for their junior year. Halley, never noticed before, is now known around school to be seen with Macon Faulkner, the rebellious bad boy. Her third period gym class with Macon is all she ever thinks about anymore. Her conversations with Scarlett are now filled with stories of gym. Then things make a strange twist when Halley finds out Scarlett's pregnant. But that's not the only thing that is changing. Halley and her parents aren't as close as they use to be and they are suspicious of this new boy Macon. But no guy has ever been like Macon and Halley finds him mysterious. She begins to break away from her strict life, controlled by her mother. As Halley is balancing helping Scarlett through her pregnancy she continues this secret life, full of lies to her family, to continue to see this guy that is changing Halley and taking her away from her family. Not only is her home life a mess, her grandma is very sick and only after a horrible incident makes Halley realize what's important to her.
Sarah Dessen brings all the hard problems teen's face into this story. This story also shows the power of love and friendship. After the incident Halley realizes who really cares for her and she turns to her best friend, who has always been there for her. Throughout everything they know their friendship will never break and best friends are always there for each other. If any girl has experienced a first love they will be able to relate to this story. All the issues faced are real life problems teenage girls deal with so the book is guaranteed to keep you interested. I recommend this book to any girl who's growing up because its all seems realistic and we all face some of these issues growing up.

Summary: definitely a MUST READ
Review: Sarah Dessen does a beautiful job of pulling you into the book immediately from the first page. I may be 17, but I still read young adult books because of their action packed nature. This book is definetely one of the best.

The way the story circles around Scarlett's pregnancy (which, I must say, is written without a single melodramatic line) draws you into the story head on. The only thing that could have been improved upon was how the "romance" with Macon (cool name!) didn't begin until a substantial portion of the book was read. Because of this, however, that particular plot line jumped out at me, and I became just as excited about him as Halley was.

Another thing I liked was the number of characters involved. It was almost more like a extremely well done soap opera because just when you were getting a little bored with the book's current events, another character would jump into the foreground and twist the story around into something new and exciting.

To be frank, I finished the book and immediately started looking for more Sarah Dessen novels. And trust me, she will NEVER disapoint you.

Summary: Someone Like You
Review: The book I choose to critique is Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen. It is a young adult literature book. Since it is young adult and the main character is in high school I would say the ideal audience for this book would be teenagers. It is an easy read so it would be geared toward younger teens. However, mid-late teens would also be able to get something out of this book.
I found this book to have a very interesting plot. It deals with a girl who is more or less discovering herself. At the beginning of the book her best friend's boyfriend dies. She is used to her best friend being the strong one and taking care of her, and now the roles are reversed. Shortly in, she ends up meeting a boy named Macon who was the best friend of Michael (her best friend's ex-boyfriend). Macon is somewhat of a rebel and gets her into trouble. When with him she ends up skipping school, going to parties, trying drugs, and lying to her parents constantly. Through all of this she ends up finding out her best friend, Scarlett, is pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's baby. Once again she has to be strong and help her friend deal with the dramatic changes in her life.
Even though the book had an interesting plot I think it could have been written better. Throughout the book certain parts are very detailed while others are slightly vague. One main part was eventually she breaks things off with Macon but there are no reasons given why. One minute she's in love with him and the next she suddenly decides to listen to her parents and friends when they tell her he's bad news. This part particularly confused me. Also after that part whenever his name was mentioned she was suddenly over him. I just thought this part was somewhat dramatized, and she changed too suddenly for it to be believable.
Most teens can relate to this book however. It deals with issues most teens today deal with too, such as drugs, drinking, sex, and pregnancy. These are all pressures today's teen must deal with. In this book the main character almost has sex with Macon but decides it's not the right time for her. I think this could give a lot of teens strength to realize that you are the one who has to feel comfortable with sex. And that you shouldn't be doing it just because your partner wants to. I enjoyed this book for the most part and most teens will enjoy it too.
